The bark sample is a sample of bark from the dying Grand Tree which you receive during The Grand Tree quest to have examined by Hazelmere, a gnome who lives near Yanille. Upon giving Hazelmere the bark sample, you must use the Translation book to find out what he is saying in order to find out why the Grand Tree is dying.
