The coal bag is a reward purchasable from Prospector Percy's Nugget Shop for 100 golden nuggets. The coal bag holds up to 27 pieces of coal (36 if a smithing cape is equipped). When smelting or superheating, coal in the bag will be used after the coal in the inventory. It is refillable just like essence pouches, though unlike an essence pouch, it does not degrade. This is useful for both mining and smithing as it effectively doubles the amount of coal a player can carry and thus the number of bars a player can make per inventory of ore.

Players can right-click to open the bag, which will have coal that the player mines from coal rocks be automatically placed inside the bag, providing there is space for it.

Only one coal bag may be in the player's possession at any time. It cannot be traded or dropped but it can be destroyed if it is empty. Players may sell their coal bag back to Percy in exchange for golden nuggets equal to 80% of its original cost (80 golden nuggets).

Warning: Attempting to use alchemy spells on the coal bag will destroy it regardless of whether or not there was any coal in it.

Those saving up for the Prospector kit to complete the Falador Hard Diary may wish to save their gold nuggets until they obtain all 180 needed for the Prospector kit, buy it to complete the task, and then sell it back for 80% of their nuggets (144 golden nuggets) and buy the coal bag, though keep in mind the set is also useful for a master clue step and for faster exp rates.

Note: Coal placed inside the bag will not add additional weight to your character until removed from the coal bag.

Optimal inventory setup[edit | edit source]

In the following charts, the first column identifies the type of bar to be made, the second indicates how many pieces of coal should be in each bag, the third represents how many of the primary ore (Iron, Lovakite, Mithril, Adamantite, Runite) is required, the fourth represents how many free inventory slots remain because they were not needed for ore or coal, the fifth shows how many bars are produced, and the last indicates the experience received from smelting the full load if the coal in the bag is used.

Note that smelting some of the higher ores leave several free inventory spaces. To make the best use of inventory space, the ores should be mixed instead of using just the one type of ore. For example, using 27 + 15 coal, 7 adamantite ore, 4 coals + 1 mithril ore or 5 gold ores at a normal furnace would leave no empty inventory space. This method however takes more clicking.
