An earth rune (nz) is a Nightmare Zone exclusive version of an earth rune. They spawn on the ground if either the Dagannoth mother or Gelatinnoth mother is present in a Nightmare Zone session, as their combat mechanics require the use of all four types of elemental spells to damage them.

As with all items with the (nz) suffix, they cannot be taken outside of the Nightmare Zone, and if discarded, can be retrieved from the same place it spawned. Runes with the (nz) suffix cannot be used to cast non-combat spells (except for Bones to Bananas and Bones to Peaches), and all spells cast have heavily reduced Magic experience (though this does not apply to experienced gained from damage dealt.)
