Note: The following Forum post has been copied verbatim from rsw:Forum:Add a better Discord link to the sidebar, and was originally posted by rsw:User:JaydenKieran.

Our sidebar currently links to meta:Discord under the "Community" section, but this is easy to miss and requires jumping through more hoops just to get to our Discord server.

I think we should implement a Discord link positioned at the top of the sidebar (using one of Discord's native image-based widgets which updates the online count). The advantages of this that I see are:

  • More visibility - Our Discord server is used extensively by our community, including for project planning and RS:OSWF, so by having something that is more obvious which you can click on, it will hopefully recruit more people to our server.
  • Retains consistency with other sites - Similar widgets, especially the native one we're using, are used on other websites and platforms, so the link is an obvious clickthrough to Discord.
  • Spices up the sidebar - Currently the sidebar could do with a splash of something different/some colour. There are a lot of links, but they all look the same.
  • Looks good in both light and dark mode - The colour of the link/button works with both colour schemes without changes.

Here's my mockup (ignore that 'About us' is missing, I used that to implement this). It's a pure CSS solution, so no additional JS will be loaded for this.

The code for testing this (will replace the 'About us' link - when we do this for real, we'll have a "fake" link for Discord at the top of the sidebar which we'll override with the following rules):

#n-About-us {
    margin-bottom: 1em;

#n-About-us a {
    color: transparent;
    background: url("") no-repeat;
    height: 20px;
    display: block;

I'm sure we can make small adaptations to this if need be to fit properly.

I think this is a good idea to get more people involved in our server, and is better than the less obvious 'Discord server' link in the sidebar which doesn't currently even link to the server directly.

Support - As nominator. In my opinion, the easier it is to get from the wiki to the official wiki Discord, the better. BigDiesel2m (talk) 10:34, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Support - The easier it is to get to the discord, the more people will get engaged with the community, and hopefully stick around. I was one of those people a year ago.

I also like how it looks clean with minimal effort. Jeljo (talk) 11:56, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Support - It's a bit difficult to get an idea of how important/useful the discord is for communicating with the current setup, and I think this makes it more apparent. Andmcadams (talk) 16:17, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Support - I agree with the other comments. Discord really became a very important communication tool, and we should try to encourage new editors to join the discord. ─ Reanimate Aviansie icon (mobile).png BrokTalk 20:03, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Support — If possible, make the Discord icon dark brown (on light mode) to make it fit better to the color scheme. --Kelafornia (talk) 21:14, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment - any thoughts on the alternative styles posted on the rsw thread? I like the idea of having a better discord link either way, but there is a bit more discussion on styles over there. チェン (話し合う) 00:28, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

- I think I like the default style the most from what I've seen suggested so far zTUG5mD.png Crow 653  15:24, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment - As the response here as been pretty positive and per Cook on Discord, I've implemented the proposal on OSW for now so that we can gather feedback. The design is not final and subject to change per this thread. Please have a look and see what you think. jayden 14:56, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Question - I noticed that the invite link is /HWhxYsP. Is that for tracking purposes? I ask because on meta:Discord we have the link as /runescapewiki. Legaia2Pla · ʟ · 22:43, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Yup jayden 22:48, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Support - Late to the party, but having discord easily accessible and visible means that there is a greater chance someone comes into one of the channels and mentions an issue which means more immediate responses about it, resolving it, answering questions, etc. Talk page edits can get lost in the list, and it is hard sometimes (especially with IPs) to get responses about whatever it may be. IDC about design, as long as it is very easily visible. Also, per Jeljo, it engages the person, even if they don't necessarily edit it themselves, it gets them in means they are more likely to do the same in the future. Alternate design - I find the current design unacceptable on retina displays, compare normal (top) with retina (bottom, blurry):

Since the image is in the most prominent visible location on the entire page, it should match the high standards of design that Steve, myself and others have spent so much time perfecting. Steve proposed a custom button that allows us to serve a high-resolution image with a bigger icon and text description:
Despite losing the active viewer count, this button solves a lot of the usability concerns in the current design. The original discord icon, especially when blurry, is so small to be nearly unrecognizable. The "X online" text gives no indication to someone unfamiliar with Discord that the button is a link to an external chat app. The new button will appear sharp on all displays, has a large icon, and includes unambiguous text with obvious Discord branding. Support Alt Design - Beyond the technical, this looks way better and is a clearer communication of what it does. I like this a lot Choppetalk 06:04, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Support alt - The blur is unacceptable lol. As long as the button doesn't say "Join us in Discord!", I'm fine with using our own custom one. -Towelcat (talk) 07:11, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Prefer alternate design - Blurry is bad, cwispy is good. Jakesterwars (talk) 05:22, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Prefer alt - I would prefer the original button because I think that the online now counter has value, but the blur is really awful. I care less about the actual online value and more about the fact that it helps show the discord is important for editors since before it was a bit hard to figure that out without actually joining. Having a big discord button at the top of the sidebar should convey the same idea. Andmcadams (talk) 05:40, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
