Hello everyone,
Today I'd like to talk about an issue that affects millions of wikians across the world.

As our understanding of the game's cache continues to improve, we're constantly getting access to more and more assets and data previously un-thought of by any of us. One of the things that comes along with this is the ability to rip full size chatheads. However, previously unbeknownst to us, the full size models for some chatheads are quite excessive. Please take a look below at three examples of what I deem to be unnessesarily oversized chatheads:

The gallery does not do them justice. Please look at them on their respective pages to see how they (attempt to) fit on their own pages.

In some instances, I believe that access to full size chatheads can be a very good asset to have in one's back pocket: Some are only just out of bounds enough in the game to where having a few extra pixels is beneficial. However, I believe some of these have crossed the line into absurdity to the point of borderline space wasting & unhelpfulness.

There are two main points I'd like to go over before presenting possible options to RS:IMG.

  • Both the Old School RuneScape Wiki, and our sister wiki, have created policies in several instances that value what can be accessed in the vanilla game over what may look nicer, to some, using external software or similar means.
  • RS:IMG currently states that images from the cache "Must only be used in situations where obtaining an image of the subject in game is impossible or extremely difficult." - We already have perfectly fine images for, if not all, then most of the images that are being replaced with oversized ones.

With that said, the reason I've brought you all here today is to discuss what to do with these large orb children.

# Desc Option
A) Ban the chunkies Strictly prohibit use of chatheads obtained outside of the vanilla Old School RuneScape client. Any offending chatheads currently matching this rule are reverted, as will subsequent attempts at uploading them.
B) Only when subtle The current line about cache related imagery on RS:IMG is loosened slightly to permit the uploading of chathead images that are obtained outside of the vanilla Old School RuneScape client provided they are not absurdly big - examples of "absurdly big images" in this instance would be the ones in the gallery above. A point of discussion could be a dimension or pixel limit. This option includes allowing the use of cache images if they are cropped to chatbox size provided that a higher res version is not available in game.
C) Use common sense It is what it says on the tin.
D) Status quo Chonker chathead images are uploaded at the discretion of the uploadee. Nothing really changes from how it is now.
E) Some other fifth thing Maybe my ideas are bad and you have a better one, probably, who knows?

Hopefully, with the power of community discourse we can decide what to do with all these chunky children that suddenly populate our border. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Support D - I think they're fine. Talk-to Kelsey 08:01, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Mix of B and C - Chop the chunkers down to approximately how they look in the chatbox, but only if it's a resolution/quality gain (this is where common sense kicks in). If there's no useful gain from the chunkmen, use the in-game screens instead. Towelcat (talk) 08:15, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Support D - The more information the better, imo. Either the whole model should be used or just what's shown in-game. Picking and choosing which is too large and needs to be cropped is meh. --MitcheII (talk) 08:26, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Mix of C and D - Get the best image possible however we can, but use some common sense on what that means. Gnome child would probs be better with the older version, but I don't really mind the other two. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 08:37, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Support B - I agree that the oversized chatheads aren't actually helpful in most cases. That said, being able to pull chatheads from cache lets us get proper transparency on chatheads when otherwise we wouldn't be able to, so I feel like banning all cache-grabbing might be going a bit far. Knock out the major offenders, but keep stuff like File:Guard (East Varrock) chathead.png which is improved by accurate transparency. BigDiesel2m (talk) 14:13, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Support B/C — Using the cache is helpful as far as I know, but they should reflect how it looks in-game. --laagone talk 14:28, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Whatever looks consistent on articles - Since most of our chatheads are going to be the normal in-game resolution, it looks out of place to have chatheads that take up twice as much horizontal space, the way Azzanadra does right now. The in-game chatheads are also designed to reasonably correspond to the NPC model, which in the case of Mazchna is true, but for the gnome balloons it is not. Showing additional detail that still looks like the NPC is good, as long as it doesn't disrupt the presentation of the article and links to the NPC using chatl. If an expanded chathead model reveals something interesting, it can still be kept in the trivia. Riblet15 (talk) 20:55, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Closed - A mix of C and D will be used based on the chathead and the user's discretion (which, basically, is how it is now). -- Recent uploads SpineTalkContribs 03:52, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
