Forum:NPC Image Naming Conventions
With the recent development of the minimal osrs npc database thanks to Riblet and Abex, we now have unprecedented ease of access to NPC information, including a whole host of pre-generated NPC images. This has led to a push to update and improve our NPC coverage, especially now that we can have high-quality images for any and all variations of each NPC.
So, a lot of people have been uploading a lot of images, and there doesn't seem to be much consistency in how these images are named. It's all well and good to call something File:Zombie.png when it's the only zombie pic on the wiki, but when it comes time to upload 70 different Zombie models as different files, it can get somewhat confusing.
So, before it gets any more out of hand, I figure it might be productive to have some sort of conversation so we can maybe be more consistent on how we name the files. Should we name them based on level, like File:Brawler (Lv 129).png? What if one image is used by multiple levels? Or if there's multiple images for the same level? (see File:Angry giant rat (Level 45, C).png)
For Skeletons, I uploaded the majority of the common skeletons as File:Skeleton (3).png, File:Skeleton (4).png, etc. and then sorted those out on the page. For specific Skeletons, I named them stuff like File:Skeleton (Tarn's Lair, 3).png, mixing the specification with an indexing number. These could just as easily be something like "File:Skeleton (Tarn's Lair, Level 73)", but if there's multiple level 73 skeletons in Tarn's Lair, do we then call the next one "File:Skeleton (Tarn's Lair, Level 73, B)" or something?
We could always avoid the naming problem altogether by simply uploading all the (for example) Zombie pictures with either index numbers (2,3,4...) attached or with the relevant ID attached, but that makes them difficult to sort without having to go back and look at MOND for reference.
Anyways, I wish I could boil this down to a few options to vote on, but I honestly don't really know where to begin with that. With any luck, we can have a decent discussion on the different options and come to some sort of concensus. BigDiesel2m (talk) 00:01, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I think the file naming I used for the Skeleton images makes good sense. Naming the files like File:Skeleton (Melzar's Maze).png matches up with the names of the pages themselves, and adding an index like File:Skeleton (Melzar's Maze, 2).png seems like a reasonable way to upload the rest of them. For Undead ones I did something weird with File:Undead one (Skeletal).png and File:Undead one (Zombie).png because the old images were named in that style, but maybe those should be changed over to just being numbered? Not really sure hope yall can help alleviate my confusion. BigDiesel2m (talk) 00:01, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
Comment - Common sense should be applied to any idenfitiers used. Imo we should prioritize identifiers like so (assuming for each that theres a unique model): Quest/Event (Full name for q/e i.e. 2017 Christmas event) -> Location -> Level -> #, seperating each by commas if multiple identifiers are use. I used letters on the rats as it can be harder to read at a glance but that's up for debate rn. I think there's a handful of exceptions that would be within reason to use different naming conventions such as Galvek or multi-stage bosses such as Alchemical Hydra, Witch's experiment, and Kolodion. For the latter I propose using (Stage 1) or something similar going forward. iN008talk 00:09, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
