Hex edit detected were items that was previously given to players using illegal hacking software. They can also be seen in the Certer and Quiz Master random events.
During RuneScape 2, players would use hex editors in attempts to change the quantities of items, or to view items not normally available in game. The Granite maul and Abyssal whip were discovered by players before their official announcement through such methods. As a result, more precautions were taken against this, including Hunter being named as "Hex editing" ingame before release.
In August 2005, several items with bizarre names were added, such as 9mm revolver, Mobile phone, and Nezikchened's mum. Players who attempted to view these items would instead be given a Hex edit detected. Despite the intimidating examine information (Your IP has been logged and passed to Customer Support.), it is unclear if any action was actually taken against players who did so, since hex editing was not server-side.
While this feature has been removed, the items are still present in Old School RuneScape, as they appear in the interfaces for both the Quiz Master and the Certer random events.
