Farming is a skill trained primarily through crop running. The major difference for ironmen compared to normal farming training is the difficulty in getting seeds, particularly those early on in their journey.

Early training: Quests[edit | edit source]

Early levels can be skipped by completing quests that give Farming experience. Completing the following grants a total of 17,500 experience, which will get the player up to level 32. This skips much of the tedium of low-level Farming and seed collecting.

Fastest experience[edit | edit source]

Efficient tree runs[edit | edit source]

If not paying farmers to look after each tree, always use ultracompost on the patch in order to minimise the risk of disease. It is usually not worth spending time to gather payments for farming, since the chance of a tree dying is very low through the use of the Resurrect Crops spell (along with using ultracompost) on the Arceuus spellbook.

Efficient herb runs[edit | edit source]

In addition to farming trees, a significant amount of Farming experience is obtained from doing herb runs over time. Additionally, farmed herbs are critical for herblore training.

Herb runs, get to every patch as quickly as possible, clean herbs then note on the leprechaun, try to have an anima seed planted in the farming guild for increased herb yield, you'll sustain them if you keep up with hespori. You can do limpwurt/snape grass alongside herb runs if you need them. Use secateurs + farming cape for increased yield. Plant more valuable seeds in the increased yield patches. Only use the farming guild patch if your herbs will be done before your next contract. Weiss/Troll Poh portals are worth it if you do >~800 herb runs.

Animas to use: Iasor > Attas > Kronos

On increased yield patches plant: Toadflax, Cadantine, Lantadyme, and Torstol

Quickest teleports to herb patches
Location Teleport (best → worst)
Ardougne Ardougne cloak Fishing guild Ardougne teleport
Catherby Catherby teleport Camelot teleport
Falador Explorer's ring Falador teleport
Harmony Harmony Island tele w/ Spellbook Swap Harmony Island house portal
Kourend Xeric's Talisman Kourend house portal
Morytania ALQ fairy ring Ectophial Fenkenstrein teleport
Weiss Weiss house portal Icy basalt
Farming guild Farming cape Skills necklace Spirit tree
Troll Stronghold Troll Stronghold house portal Trollheim teleport

Tool leprechauns will note all farmed products by using the unnoted items on them. This includes products which can be farmed and from other sources.

Other methods[edit | edit source]

Tithe Farm[edit | edit source]

Main article: Tithe Farm

Doing tithe farm early to get the herb sack, autoweed, and seed box is a good idea, as it lets you unlock hard contracts earlier.

You can do tithe farm if you need auto weed, seed box, or herb sack. It's not worth getting the farming outfit or doing tithe for xp.[clarification needed] It is recommended to do Tithe Farm at level 54 to get the auto-weed perk, seed box and herb sack. This unlocks medium contracts in the Farming Guild faster, and the rewards are useful for various skilling, such as for pickpocketing Master Farmers and training Slayer.

Giant seaweed[edit | edit source]

Farming giant seaweed requires Farming 23 Farming, a fishbowl helmet, diving apparatus, and seaweed spores.

Highly recommended to use Numulite as payment to protect the seaweed. The best way to get seaweed to use with your buckets of sand. Teleport to the digsite, quick travel to fossil island, take the rowboat near the fossil island bank to the north of the island, then out to sea, then dive. You can kill lobstrosities for 120+ seaweed spores /hr Seaweed spores randomly spawn when you’re in the giant seaweed area, be on the lookout for them. Magic secateurs / farming cape don’t affect yield. Compost does affect yield.

Obtaining seeds[edit | edit source]

All seeds: Farming contracts[edit | edit source]

Farming contracts are the most efficient way to get seeds.

You should be doing as many farming contracts per day as possible, they provide a lot of herblore and farming xp and are your main source of herb / tree seeds. Use ultra compost on your herbs as soon as it's available to you.

Doing farming contracts in the Farming Guild is currently the best way to obtain tree and herb seeds from level 65 onwards. It is best to preplant certain seeds to have a higher chance to complete multiple contracts in a row.

You should be doing farming contracts as often as you can. Farming contracts are farming tasks assigned by Guildmaster Jane, which requires you to grow certain crops within the Farming Guild in exchange for seed packs. You should always start off with receiving the highest tier assignment you can, and then downgrading the contract if it’s something you don’t have pre planted or takes longer than a bush patch (2 hr 40min) to grow. The general strategy behind doing as many contracts as possible is to preplant the most commonly assigned tasks, since there's an equal chance of every assignment, your preplants are usually tasks shared across multiple difficulty tables. This often allows you to instantly complete multiple contracts in a row.

For hard contracts, preplant:
Type Plant name
Herb Snapdragon Lantadyme Cadantine
Tree Maple tree Yew tree
Fruit tree Palm tree
Bush Poison ivy Whiteberries
Cactus Potato cactus
Flower White lily
Allotment #1 Watermelon
Allotment #2 Snape grass
For medium contracts, preplant:
Type Plant name
Herb Irit
Tree Maple tree
Fruit tree Curry tree
Bush Whiteberries Jangerberries
Cactus Cactus
Flower White lily
Allotment #1 Watermelon
Allotment #2 Strawberries

Tree seeds: Birds nests[edit | edit source]

Main article: Birdhouse trapping

Birdhouse trapping on Fossil Island is a good source of tree seeds. Birdhouses have a chance to drop a bird nest, dependent on tier, which may contain seeds. Since they can be harvested every 50 minutes, the number of nests and seeds players harvest ends up being significant.

It's worth building the highest tier birdhouse possible, since the tier determines the number of nests harvested.

All seeds: Monster drops[edit | edit source]

Nechryael tasks can be done in the slayer tower on task.

Less intensive options: If you want something AFK to supply seeds, you can melee Dagannoths in high prayer gear with a bonecrusher in the catacombs - also supplies prayer xp from the ensouled heads and medium clues.

At higher levels, players can also get tree seeds from various bosses and demi-bosses, such as Zulrah, lizardman shamans, demonic gorillas, Kalphite Queen, Callisto and Venenatis.

Herb/allotment seeds: Pickpocketing Master Farmers[edit | edit source]

Players with high Thieving can also pickpocket Master Farmers (with at least 94 thieving and ardy hard diary completed so you don't fail) for herb and allotment seeds.

Tree seeds: Wintertodt[edit | edit source]

Main article: Wintertodt

Low-level players can get tree seeds from Wintertodt.

Obtaining compost[edit | edit source]

Ultracompost can be made by buying pineapples from charter ships or harvesting watermelons, putting them into a compost bin and using 25 volcanic ashes on a full compost bin containing supercompost. Alternatively, with 20 Herblore one can make compost potion which will turn a regular compost bin into supercompost, and then use volcanic ashes for ultra.

Unlock the ultracompost version of the Fertile Soil spell as early as possible, since it negates the need to spend time making ultracompost.
