General training notes[edit | edit source]

When training Ranged, it's recommended to always use the most effective armour you can afford. Throwing knives are popular for training at lower levels due to their fast attack speed and ranged strength bonuses. If throwing knives are too expensive, darts are a cheaper alternative.

The Rapid attack mode gives the best XP/hour.

Equipment choice[edit | edit source]

Items will be listed in order of how much they increase general ranged damage per second. In nearly all cases, optimising for offensive stats is more effective than optimising for defensive or balanced stats, especially when fighting low-offence, high hp monsters. In addition, optimising for ranged strength is usually better than optimising for accuracy except against high-defence monsters.

Rings should be imbued at the Nightmare Zone as soon as possible. If the player cannot afford the archers ring, a ring of wealth is a decent alternative to help improve rare drop table rolls and pick up coins, but it does not increase damage.

Training methods[edit | edit source]

Levels 1–32 – Questing[edit | edit source]

Completing Shadow of the Storm (putting the experience reward on Ranged), Death to the Dorgeshuun and Horror from the Deep will grant a total of 16,662.5 experience, elevating a level 1 Ranged to 32 without doing any actual training.

Levels 1–45/70 – Crabs[edit | edit source]

Killing crabs is a fairly fast, afkable and very affordable way of training Ranged at low levels. There are four types of crabs the player can train on, but they all have high Hitpoints, very low Defence and deal minimal damage. They become aggressive when walked by, and stay aggressive for around 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the player has to reset aggressiveness by running away far enough (usually a minimap's length). The player should choose a spot that makes two or three spawns aggressive at the same time.

Having at least 30 Defence is recommended before starting Ranged training on these monsters to mitigate the damage.

  • Ammonite Crabs on Fossil Island. They have 100 Hitpoints, making them the best option of the four. They also drop unidentified fossils, which can be turned in for experience lamps in Varrock Museum after cleaning.
  • Swamp Crabs on the south-eastern coast of Port Phasmatys. They have 75 Hitpoints and are weak to Ranged, and reside in a single-combat zone.
  • Sand Crabs on Hosidius. They have 60 Hitpoints and have no quest requirements, but are usually very crowded.
  • Rock Crabs on Rellekka. They have no quest requirements and are usually less crowded than Sand Crabs, but only have 50 Hitpoints.

Recommended equipment[edit | edit source]

  • Highest-level throwing knife up to rune you are able to use. They have the highest damage output, but are significantly more expensive compared to other options.
  • Magic shortbow (i) (or yew shortbow below level 50) with rune arrows. This offers slightly less damage output than using rune knives, but is significantly cheaper. Amethyst arrows can be used with a magic shortbow (i) for extra damage, however they are notably more expensive compared to rune.
  • Highest-level darts up to mithril or adamant you are able to use. They are cheap, deal decent damage and are easy to buy from the Grand Exchange. Adamant darts have comparable damage output to using a shortbow with rune arrows, and it is usually cheaper to use the former option.
  • Dorgeshuun crossbow with bone bolts. This offers the worst damage output compared to above options, but is usually the cheapest. However, steel or mithril darts are usually comparable in terms of cost, and they offer notably higher damage output.
  • Using other crossbows is not recommended due to their slower attack speed, which makes them worse in damage output compared to darts or magic shortbow (i) with rune arrows.

At level 30, it is strongly recommended to complete Animal Magnetism to get access to Ava's devices. They will return your ammo provided that you are not wearing a metallic body (e.g chainbody), which will save a lot of money and time as you will not have to buy as many bolts and need to pick them up as often. At level 50, Ava's accumulator can be purchased, which will decrease the amount of arrows lost substantially.

Since the crabs have very low Defence, having the highest possible accuracy bonuses is not too important as accuracy has minimal effect on the damage output. At low levels, it is still a good idea to at least upgrade your body and leg slot equipment as you level, since they give the most accuracy and defence bonuses of all the slots. Start out by wearing a leather cowl, leather body, leather vambraces, and leather chaps. Other optional but useful items include an amulet of glory and a combat bracelet.

Once you hit 42 Ranged, it is highly recommended to get full Void Knight equipment with the ranger helm from the Pest Control minigame. Its damage boost set effect makes it substantially better than dragonhide armour against low defence monsters, and is also very useful to have if the player plans to train Ranged later with chinning.

If you are not going to get full Void Knight equipment for Ranged training, continue upgrading your equipment as you level. At level 40 Ranged you can wear Green dragonhide armour (requires 40 Defence and completion of Dragon Slayer for body). Upon completion of The Fremennik Trials you can also wear an Archer helm (with 45 Defence) and spined armour which has stats equivalent to green dragonhide. Switch to blue dragonhide armour at level 50, and at level 60, switch to red dragonhide armour.

Levels 1–45/70 – Using dwarf multicannon[edit | edit source]

Using the dwarf multicannon is one of the fastest ways of gaining Ranged experience at lower levels. Players must have completed Dwarf Cannon quest in order to use the dwarf multicannon, but there are no level requirements to use one. The cannon has a lot higher damage output compared to other options at low levels as it has a max hit of 30 with cannonballs and 35 with Granite cannonballs (regardless of the player's Ranged level).

With the average price of cannonballs however, the use of a cannon is often considered to be quite expensive. At higher levels, it is a lot faster experience per hour and usually cheaper to train Ranged with chinning.

Slayer[edit | edit source]

Training Slayer efficiently grants the player some passive Ranged experience from using the dwarf multicannon. It is always worth using the cannon wherever applicable, as the cost of using the cannon is justified by the saved time compared to not using one. A melee task can take almost twice as long if not using the cannon; for example, in multi-combat areas such as during dagannoth and kalphite tasks the cannon will deal most of the damage, while the player is getting nearly as much Melee experience as they would without using a cannon. Should the player not be able to afford to use the cannon, it is better to make the money for the cannonballs than train Slayer without the cannon.

The amount of Ranged experience gained from Slayer depends on the player's task list, but if training Slayer efficiently the player can expect to gain at least around 5 million Ranged experience from level 99 Slayer.

Levels 1–45 – Cannoning caged ogres[edit | edit source]

Ogres can be killed in the Combat Training Camp after completing Biohazard. Using a cannon here is quite a lot of exp and can lead to relatively quick levelling at early levels. This is a great method for low levels as there are no level requirements to use the cannon.

Levels 1–70 – Cannoning ice trolls[edit | edit source]

Coal rocks safespot location.

Cannoning ice trolls is slower but much more affordable option. If you've completed The Fremennik Trials quest, setting up a cannon a few steps south of the coal rocks just west of the eastern mining icon in the Fremennik Isles will allow you to safespot the ice trolls from behind the rocks, and refill your cannon with little trouble. Depending on your Ranged level and how many cannonballs you bring (which limits trips to the bank), you can get 60-100k xp/hr while making most, if not all of your money back, and even profiting in some cases.

It's recommended to be able to use telegrab so you don't have to incur damage retrieving drops, and to be able to low or high alch drops. If using low alch, it is best to save the rune items, granite shields, expensive seeds/herbs, noted raw sharks, and balls of wool to sell on the Grand Exchange, while alching the rest. Food is not necessary, but a small amount should be brought to be safe. Lower level players should beware, as without Protect from Melee, ice trolls can hit in the 20's while you run to the safespot. The most effective strategy is to bring enough cannonballs to allow you to acquire a full inventory of non-alched items, before banking or teleporting to the Grand Exchange with a ring of wealth.

With level 80 Prayer and a dragonbone necklace, bonecrusher and Neitiznot shield (to protect against ice troll females) you can have infinite prayer points while using Protect from Melee.

Levels 75–99 – Cannoning dagannoth under the Lighthouse[edit | edit source]

Cannoning dagannoth after completion of Horror from the Deep quest is a fast, but expensive method of training ranged. Using a blowpipe and mithril darts with the cannon, you can reach experience rates from 160k-175k per hour. World hopping may be needed due to other players doing slayer tasks. Protect from Melee with the blowpipe special effect limits the need for banking for food. Dagannoths do drop Snapdragon and Torstol seeds to help minimise the cost for prayer potions and cannonballs. Higher defence levels help limiting damage from the Dagannoths that use range for their attack style but the attacks are very inaccurate.

Levels 45–99 – Chinning maniacal monkeys[edit | edit source]

Chinning maniacal monkeys.

For more information, see Maniacal monkey/Strategies.

Throwing chinchompas at maniacal monkeys (commonly known as "chinning") in Kruk's Dungeon on Ape Atoll is an expensive, but by far the fastest way to train Ranged in the game. This requires having started chapter II of the quest Monkey Madness II.

It is best to use equipment that maximises the player's Ranged damage and Prayer bonuses. Because of the low defence of the maniacal monkeys, Void Knight equipment is far superior to dragonhide or Armadyl armour due to the damage-boosting set effect. Maniacal monkeys frequently drop 1-dose prayer potions which negates the cost of using Protect from Melee and damage-boosting prayers. Players who have completed hard tasks in the Morytania Diary and have level 80 Prayer can alternatively use a bonecrusher necklace to restore Prayer points.

Experience rates scale depending on the player's equipment and Ranged level. Even at just level 45, players can gain up to around 250,000 experience per hour using regular chinchompas, increasing to 350,000–400,000 experience per hour at level 55 using red chinchompas, and to 500,000–550,000 experience per hour at level 65 using black chinchompas. At level 99, it is possible to gain up to 950,000 experience per hour.

Levels 45–99 – Chinning skeletal monkeys[edit | edit source]

Skeletal monkeys are an alternative to maniacal monkeys if the player hasn't started Monkey Madness II. However, they are significantly worse than maniacal monkeys and thus only recommended for pure accounts who cannot access the maniacal monkey area.

If chinning at skeletal monkeys on Ape Atoll it's highly recommended you use ranged Void armour obtained from the Pest Control minigame. The salve amulet(ei) is also highly recommended when chinning skeletal monkeys. The respective boosts from the void and the salve amulet (ei) will stack, giving you a 30% boost to damage and accuracy (salve amulet's damage and accuracy boost only affect your primary target, however this reduces splashing as chinchompas will miss all targets if they miss the main target). If using hawk eye or eagle eye, the boost will become 40%, or 45%. Eagle eye drains prayer points at twice the rate of hawk eye, so the more frequent trips for prayer potions may make eagle eye counterproductive. Do not forget a one click teleport or a greegree (note: the greegree cannot be equipped while in combat).

Levels 70–99 – Nightmare Zone[edit | edit source]

For more information, see Nightmare Zone/Strategies.

Using the normal customisable rumble setup in Nightmare Zone is a viable AFK training method for players who cannot afford chinchompas. With this method the player does not need to interact with the client for 20 minutes, after which the player will stop attacking the monsters. Using a magic shortbow (i) and amethyst or rune arrows with super ranging and Absorption potions, the experience rate caps at around 60,000–70,000 experience per hour, with minimal cost and barely any attention required. Higher rates can be achieved by using the toxic blowpipe, but this is not recommended due to significantly higher cost.

Levels 75–99 – Training Slayer with Ranged[edit | edit source]

Using a toxic blowpipe for Slayer training is not considered efficient to do, however it is an option for players who do not value gaining Melee or Magic experience and want some variety to their training. The benefit of ranging Slayer tasks is that it is relatively decent Ranged experience per hour and it also results in slightly higher Slayer experience rates as the blowpipe offers slightly higher damage output compared most Melee weapons. Training Ranged whilst on a task also enables the player to use a black mask (i)/Slayer helmet (i) for a 15% boost to ranged accuracy and damage while also taking advantage of the accuracy bonuses of dragonhide or Armadyl armour. However, using the blowpipe is expensive, although this can be somewhat mitigated by monster drops. Using other weapons is not recommended as they have less damage output than using Melee.
