Andmcadams

Andmcadams TalkContribs • Last 20 Forum - Main - User talk editsEdit count

I think I've been an active editor for about a year now. In that time I've edited a lot of weird pages (and have a lot in my backlog) and learned a lot about how the wiki works from others. I feel like I've gone through several phases as an editor, moving from transcribing dialogue, recording weights, and breaking barrels to larger scale organization with modules and bot editing, and now I am doing my own digging on underlying aspects of the game and helping create a whole new space for the wiki to grow in.

I've been hesitant about asking for tools in the past because a lot of what I needed used infrastructure outside of the wiki or I could just ask admins to do it for me. However, I think at this point not having the tools is making it difficult to perform as effectively as I would like in some areas, especially when the amount of work involved is too much to ask someone else to do for me.

I, Andmcadams, accept this nomination for administratorship. I have read the policies concerning administrators. I realise that this nomination may fail. If I do get community consensus, I promise not to abuse my tools because I realise that this is a serious offence. If the community finds that I have done so, my tools will be revoked, and in extreme cases I could be given a community ban. Signed, Andmcadams (talk) 07:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Questions for the nominee

1. What work do you intend to take part in?
It sounds silly, but being able to delete pages without having to ping people or {{D}} and wait is a big part of what I want. During the last round of OSWF, I realized how important this could be, as sometimes people would make stub pages and immediately abandon them, which made them stop appearing as redlinks. This meant that I had to either do a bit of extra work to keep the statuses of pages constantly up to date on the list or coordinate with an admin to delete a set of pages in X hours if the person didn't come back and edit or talk in the Discord. It just makes it easier to help coordinate OSWF tasks if I have the tools to deal with things like that as they happen. I would like to do more OSWF related things in the future, and I'd rather be ready for those than wait and ask when I'm in the middle of one. Additionally, having admin tools will make it a bit easier to manage the varb pages as those continue to grow. Realistically, I think it's less likely that I will use blocks or anti-vandalism deletions/hide revisions nowadays since I'm not as active during updates, which is when most of that seems to take place.

2. What have been your most helpful contributions to the Old School RuneScape Wiki, and why?
Most of my contributions are bits and pieces all over the place as I'm usually interested in niche, obscure content. Item weights (pre-Jagex infodump) are a good example of that. My contributions lately have been mostly varbit/varplayer related as I try to understand some of the game mechanics at a lower level, which has led to some interesting finds. However, my biggest contributions are probably the tools I've created as a result of these interests, as well as the OSWFs I've helped coordinate. Both of these have the potential to bring in new editors, and honestly one round of OSWF is enough where the collective work of the people who come in dwarfs whatever I've done. Though it feels a bit disingenuous to call that "my contribution" since it's the work of many others, I don't think it's unfair to say that the time I took to plan tasks, create things like the Temple Trekking points plugin for data collection, and answer people's questions about the tasks/general editing helped make some of those contributions possible.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
The main thing that comes to mind is when I incorrectly updated a transcript page, which was reverted. I hadn't noticed that I had changed the dialogue under the wrong heading so I was fairly annoyed by what I felt was an undeserved revert and left a rather salty comment when I reverted it back. I'd like to think that this was a one time thing, as I don't think I've ever done that before or since, and I was honestly a bit embarrassed by what I said. It didn't help that the update that morning was rather hectic and as a result, the editor who undid my edit got confused for another person who edited my talk page around the same time, leading to them accidentally getting banned for a short period of time before I pointed out what happened. Other than that and some pretty minor drama in Discord a long time ago, I don't think I've many conflicts with others.

Support -- More admins active in Recent Changes are always good, especially at "unusual" times. As well as this your continued work with Varbits and recent work with hosting a OSWF task as well as making the plugin that it hinged on. Because of these factors I think Andmcadams would make good usage of his Admin powers. Luna Lana probaly mispelt this 16:02, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - Always nice to have more RC patrol with perms to deal with more serious stuff. Access to delete is pretty big for that and for OSWF, same with files in that regard. Will be helpful with project space as well. Coordinating and being able to implement features for future oswf tasks also means its only more valuable. Apart from not letting the lineage of RfA noms to contine, overall I see no detriment to approving. Choppetalk 01:21, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - Andrew is a fine dude who's done much to help the wiki, in particular his recent work with varbits, and is certain to not disappear if he is to acquire adminship, 100%. For this reason he has my support, if only so I can have Julia close it instead of me 7:^] -- Recent uploads SpineTalkContribs 04:43, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - Andrew is a great addition to the wiki as a whole and has done numerous things to not only improve the wiki, but generate additional editors. This is either through hosting an OSWF or by helping out in Discord when folks have questions. I don't anticipate any foul play with tools/permissions. --Legaia2Pla · ʟ · 18:50, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - Andmcadams is a very active editor breaking ground in a totally new type of article (see Varbits) and having admin tools would be useful in several parts of this project. He's very communicative in Discord and is helpful to new editors. I have no concerns about him using the tools appropriately. Riblet15 (talk) 04:57, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - per the comments above. Shoyrukon (talk) 04:59, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - From what I've seen, Andrew is a very dedicated editor, and I think someone who is active in a wide variety of fields on the wiki like him could make great use of the couple of extra buttons. Also, I've heard he would really like to have a poop coloured name, wants to get random pings from people because his name starts with 'A', likes to catch more drama, wishes to view-ban anyone he disagrees with, and likes to brag to people in-game about being a wiki admin. Those are all qualities I expect from an admin, so you've got my full support. Also I'm very hopeful this fancy new username colour will tempt him to reveal the secret formula to the krabby patty. Oppose - His userpage has a canary on it, everybody knows canaries signal collapses so it means he's gonna collapse as an editor soon! zTUG5mD.png Crow 653  22:34, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - I expect at least 1000 edits on his first day. -Towelcat (talk) 14:18, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Do 1000 null-edits count? Because I believe he's got some of those lined up ;) Joeytje50 (talk) 14:28, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Support - When I came for OSWF I thought that he was a mod. Time to make him one. -Helmfirth (talk) 14:50, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
