The Rune kiteshield is the second best smithable kiteshield, only beaten by the Dragon kiteshield. The Rune kiteshield requires 40 Defence to wield. A player with 97 Smithing can make the shield by using three runite bars and a hammer on an anvil, granting 225 Smithing experience.

The rune kiteshield is often used as a tank shield by low-risk and void rangers; despite the negative ranged attack bonus, it is much cheaper, and provides a substantial melee defence bonus, which the Odium ward lacks.

Players with at least level 43 Crafting are also able to paint the rune kiteshield at a player-owned house to create an untradeable heraldic shield, provided that they have visited Sir Renitee to obtain a crest in advance. A painted rune kiteshield will provide protection in the God Wars Dungeon as of an April 2019 update. It will turn bandits hostile, if painted in the colours of Saradomin or Zamorak.

Any monster that has access to the rare drop table can also drop the rune kiteshield.
