Skeletal Wyvern/Strategies

Skeletal Wyverns are dangerous monsters, however they are very profitable to kill. The below lists show generally accepted strategies to defeat Skeletal Wyverns.

Note that a Slayer level of 72 is required in order to deal damage to Skeletal Wyverns. This may be boosted from level 67 Slayer by eating a wild pie.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

  • High combat stats. Although not required, see the skill levels below for an indication of the advised stats:
    • If using Melee:
      • Level Attack 75 or higher
      • Level Strength 75 or higher
      • Level Hitpoints 70 or higher

Getting there[edit | edit source]

Getting to the wyverns.

The Skeletal Wyverns are located in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon. The entrance to this dungeon may be found south of Port Sarim and north of Mudskipper Point. The quickest ways to travel here are:

  1. From Rimmington use the Teleport to House spell, a Rimmington teleport tablet, or Captain Barnaby and run south-east.
  2. From the Port Sarim docks using a Charter ship, or the Minigames Pest control minigame teleport or scrolls and run west then south.
  3. From the fairy ring using code AIQ and run north.
  4. From Port Sarim using the Spirit tree, Explorer's ring, or via the Minigames Port Sarim Rat Pits minigame teleport after the completion of Ratcatchers then run south-southwest.

From the dungeon entrance, climb down the trapdoor, first run north and then run east to find an open space with ice warriors and ice giants. The entrance to the Skeletal Wyverns can be found on the southern wall of this room. Players with level 72 Agility can take a shortcut right before the icy area.

Mechanics[edit | edit source]

Attack styles[edit | edit source]

Skeletal wyverns attack with Melee, Ranged and their unique ice breath attack.

  • The Melee attack is only used when the player is standing in Melee distance and can hit up to 13.
  • The Ranged attack has an attack range of 6 tiles and can hit up to 13.
  • The ice-breath attack has an attack range of 5 tiles and can hit 50+, although this damage can be drastically reduced to a maximum hit of 10 by the following shields: elemental shield, mind shield, dragonfire shield, ancient wyvern shield and dragonfire ward.
    • This attack will also freeze the player's character for a few seconds. During this period, the character is not able to move or attack.
    • Antifire potions have no effect on the wyvern's ice breath attack.

Draconic[edit | edit source]

Skeletal Wyverns are considered to be draconic creatures, which means that they are weak against dragonbane weapons.

Tips[edit | edit source]

Dragonbane weapons[edit | edit source]

Because Skeletal Wyverns are considered to be draconic creatures, they are weak against dragonbane weapons. Therefore it is recommended to use a dragon hunter crossbow or dragon hunter lance if any of these weapons are available.

Safespotting[edit | edit source]

South of the cave door are some additional safespots in which the western and southern sides of the ice structure (or pillar) can be used as safespots.

Skeletal Wyverns can be safespotted because they have a shorter attack range than players using a crossbow or magic spells. Skeletal Wyverns can be easily safespotted during a slayer task by standing one tile north-west of Steve/Pieve.

  1. To safespot Skeletal Wyverns, first make sure to lose their aggressiveness. Aggressiveness is lost automatically after a player has spent 10 minutes in the same area (i.e. they don't move past a certain invisible border).
  2. After this time period, attack a Skeletal Wyvern and lure it behind an obstacle (e.g. a wall that is sticking out).
  3. While the Skeletal Wyvern is stuck behind the obstacle, move out of its attack range to make sure it can't attack the player anymore.
  4. Now start attacking the Skeletal Wyvern using Magic or Ranged.

Wyvern runners[edit | edit source]

There are a few Clan Chats with players that travel to different locations to deliver items to players who are training there.

When safespotting there, it is advisable to use these services to trade your unstackable lootings for new potions, runes or bolts.

Dwarf multicannon[edit | edit source]

Dwarf multicannon are allowed in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, however only in the lower part of the cave; the upper Slayer-exclusive part is a no cannon zone. Cannons will make killing Skeletal Wyverns faster and the profit from the extra drops often outweigh the cost of the cannonballs. Therefore it can be recommended to bring a dwarf multicannon when meleeing Skeletal Wyverns.

In this section it is assumed that the player is using the safespotting method to attack the Skeletal Wyverns. During the first period, while the Skeletal Wyverns are still aggressive, it is necessary to wield a shield that protects the player from the icy breath attacks. However, when the player is able to safespot the Skeletal Wyverns, it is advisable to switch shield for a shield that provides magic attack bonuses. Always keep the other shield in the inventory, as the Skeletal Wyverns sometime are not lured correctly behind the obstacles, making them not safespottable, thus them being able to use their icy breath attacks again.

This is the best-in-slot available equipment for maging Skeletal Wyverns. The set up shown in this section currently costs approximately 778,715,437 coins. See the table below for an overview of equipment alternatives in case this setup is not accessible or too expensive.

This equipment is recommended when the player has level 92 Ranged or higher, while not having access to Armadyl equipment, as at this Ranged level it is more effective than (blessed) dragonhide armour.
