Soil can be found throughout the digsite area, and plays an important role in The Dig Site quest. Depending on the type of digs in the area, players can use their trowel or rock pick, along with a specimen brush in their inventory, to dig up several items. Soil can also be found on Fossil Island in the Museum Camp.
Training digs are the lowest level of digs at the digsite and are located in south section of the digsite area. A trowel is used to dig in the training area, but no additional tools are needed. None of the items obtained from training digs are needed to progress in the quest, and generally have a very low value.

- Attempting to use a tool in the incorrect digsite soil will cause the closest Digsite workman to interrupt and explain the proper usage. If no digsite workman is within range, the message will appear in the chatbox instead.
- The various types of digs are based on the location of the player, not the specific instance of the soil. This means if the player is standing on the tile outside the digging region, none of the tools can be used to successfully dig. Instead, the player will only state that they should try using a different tool.
- The animation while digging at the Fossil Island digs will always show a trowel, even if a rock pick is used. Similarly, the chat message while digging up numulite will state that you clean it off with your brush, even if there is no specimen brush in the inventory.
