Ranged is one of the core combat styles used throughout the game, being the best option in a variety of combat situations due to its high damage output, distance from the target, and ability to safespot many enemies.

For more information about Ranged equipment, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Equipment.

Crabs[edit | edit source]

Killing crabs is one of the easiest and most popular ways of training Ranged. They have relatively high Hitpoints, low offensive and defensive stats which makes them ideal for low-level training with little to no food required. They are also aggressive for 10 minutes when walked by, making it easy enough to stand near crabs and stay in combat for long periods of time without any player input, allowing for long, consistent training sessions with minimal attention needed.

Ammonite Crabs on Fossil Island (after completion of Bone Voyage) are the best option for Ranged training, as they have the highest Hitpoints, and their occasional Fossil Island fossil drops can be stored for use in Prayer training or for accessing items in the Volcanic Mine Item Retrieval Service. Sand Crabs in Hosidius have no requirements, but they have lower Hitpoints and are usually much more crowded. Additionally, Swamp Crabs have uniquely low Ranged defensive stats, making them a viable alternative to Ammonite or Sand Crabs for Ranged training.

The Dorgeshuun crossbow is a good option for training on crabs, due to low price and availability of bone bolts. At higher levels, players can alternatively use mithril darts, rune crossbow with broad bolts or magic shortbow with broad arrows.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Prayer and Ultimate Ironman Guide/Item Management.

Chinning maniacal monkeys[edit | edit source]

A player "chinning" in Kruk's Dungeon,

Throwing red chinchompas at maniacal monkeys (commonly known as "chinning") in Kruk's Dungeon is by far the fastest way to train Ranged. This requires having started chapter II of the quest Monkey Madness II. Chinning is a good training method for players who want quickly boost their Ranged up for high-level raids or bossing, without having to wait on more passive training methods. In addition to Ranged experience, using a bonecrusher also grants the player a solid amount of passive Prayer experience by automatically burying the bones the monkeys drop.

It is best to use equipment that maximises the player's Ranged damage and Prayer bonuses, such as the Elite Void Knight equipment along with prayer-boosting items like Ardougne cloak and god books. Maniacal monkeys frequently drop 1-dose prayer potions which negates the cost of using Protect from Melee and damage-boosting prayers.

Experience rates scale depending on the player's equipment and Ranged level. Players can gain up to 300,000–400,000 experience per hour at level 55, 450,000–550,000 experience per hour at level 75 and 600,000–700,000 experience per hour at level 99.

Any chinchompas are lost upon death, including deaths at Item Retrieval Services, so it is important to keep that in mind when hunting or using chinchompas.

For more information, see Maniacal monkey/Strategies, Ultimate Ironman Guide/Item Management and Ultimate Ironman Guide/Hunter.

Slayer[edit | edit source]

Using Ranged for Slayer is generally not recommended due to the lower damage output of available weapons compared to abyssal whip and dragon scimitar. However, some tasks may be difficult or tedious to do without using protection prayers and/or prayer potions, so safespotting can be a justified option in some cases.

Ranged is commonly used against certain bosses and demi-bosses on task, such as lizardman shamans, demonic gorillas and the Alchemical Hydra.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Slayer.
