Ultimate Ironman Guide/Runecraft
Runecraft is used as both a source of runes both for Magic spells and for profit through selling them. Training Runecraft as an Ultimate Ironman was classically quite a difficult task, requiring significant preparation and inventory space for many methods. However, training methods within Great Kourend such as finding books in the Arceuus Library and crafting runes with dark essence fragments make it much more reasonable for Ultimate Ironman players to train the skill.
Early training: Quests, lamps, Tears of Guthix[edit | edit source]
Many Runecraft training methods, such as finding books at the Arceuus Library (see below) scale their experience gains based on the player's current Runecraft level. For this reason, it is usually recommended to get some quick, early levels by doing quests that reward Runecraft experience.
- The Ascent of Arceuus - requires 20% Arceuus favour, rewards 500xp
- Enter the Abyss - no requirements, rewards 1,000xp
- The Eyes of Glouphrie - requires 5 , 46 , 45 , rewards 6,000xp
Some players also opt to use experience lamps earned from various activities to supplement their Runecraft training. Some lamps, such as those rewarded from the X Marks the Spot and Client of Kourend quests can be used on any skill, while others such as most Antique lamps earned from Achievement Diaries can be used on skills once past a certain level requirement.
After the completion of the Tears of Guthix quest, players can use the minigame of the same name to gain a moderate amount of experience in their lowest level skill each week. Training other skills to keep them higher than Runecraft will ensure this weekly experience will always go to Runecraft. It should be noted that completion of the Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Achievement Diary increases experience gains at Tears of Guthix by 10%.
Levels 1–77/99: Arceuus Library[edit | edit source]
Helping customers in the Arceuus Library is the fastest Runecraft training method for Ultimate Ironmen. This method does not have any requirements and can be started at any Runecraft level. However, it is strongly recommended to complete quests to gain some levels beforehand, as each book of arcane knowledge gives 4 times the player's Runecraft level in experience, and the experience rewards benefit much more at lower levels.
Players will need to have a relatively empty inventory to have space for the books. Having at least 16 inventory slots open for the books and dark manuscripts is optimal. It is recommended to have a fairly high Agility level and full graceful outfit for faster run energy restoration. While stamina potions are not required for this method, having them is strongly recommended if doing this method for long periods of time, as this allows for much faster fetching of the books and thus increases experience a lot.
The strategy involves asking one of the three NPC's on the bottom floor with the right-click "Help" option. Sam, Professor Gracklebone or Villia will request a book from the library. While running to grab the book they have asked for, you can pick up some extra ones along the way for future book requests. Being prepared and having as many books on you as possible allows you to string together book returns for faster experience per hour. You must run back and forth between two of the NPC's as you cannot use the same one twice in a row. Upon receiving a request for a book you don't have on you, run back to the bookshelves and claim your runecrafting experience using the books of arcane knowledge and holding down 2, clicking all of the ones you have earned to gain experience while running. The book's locations stay where they are but are reset every 80–100 minutes and are different on every world, so be prepared to find their new locations when they move.
You can use the Arceuus Library Books Calculator to determine how many books you need to reach your target level or XP.
Experience rates scale linearly depending on the Runecraft level. Each book of arcane knowledge gives 4 times the player's Runecraft level in experience. With good planning and knowledge of the library, a player can collect and turn in upwards of 160 books an hour through this activity assuming stamina potions. Thus, the expected experience rate is around 600 * Runecraft level per hour. Without stamina potions, players can expect to collect and turn in around 100–110 books per hour.
This method is viable up to level 99, however players may want to switch to crafting blood runes at level 77, or soul runes at level 90. Crafting blood/soul runes in Arceuus is profitable, requires a lot less effort, does not require using stamina potions and is only slightly slower. However, this method does not require a whole inventory, so players are easily able to do farm and bird house runs.
Levels 1–77: Ourania Altar[edit | edit source]
Crafting runes at the Ourania Altar is a slightly slower but less click-intensive alternative to Arceuus Library. This method is only worth doing up to level 77, after which crafting blood runes in Arceuus becomes better. Players will need to have completed Lunar Diplomacy quest and the unlocked the Ourania Teleport spell for this method. This is a good place to use any noted pure essence received through Slayer or other Combat training.
Note: There is a risk of death at the Ourania Altar, particularly with low Defence and due to disconnections, which may put items stored in an Item Retrieval Service at risk.
Eniola, who serves as a bank within the Ourania Cave, will unnote pure essence for the cost of any 20 non-combination runes, with a quick-deal option to set up the preferred rune type. Having more space in the inventory allows for more pure essence to be used per run, increasing experience rates. For this purpose, mind runes are a popular choice, as they are cheap to buy in packs from Magic shops, and can also be gotten in large amounts from Barrows.
Common sources for noted pure essence include Twisted Banshee, Gargoyles, Skeletal Wyverns, Wyrms, Zulrah and Chambers of Xeric. With completion of the various tiers of the Ardougne Diary, Wizard Cromperty will also provide daily noted pure essence to the player. After completing the In Aid of the Myreque and Darkness of Hallowvale quests, the Temple Trekking and Burgh de Rott Ramble minigames can provide a moderate amount of noted pure essence.
Experience rates scale depending on the Runecraft level. Players can expect to gain anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 experience per hour depending on Runecraft level, pouches, and inventory space. Below are the expected experience rates for the activity, though your rate might be lower depending on exact setup.

Levels 77–99: Crafting blood/soul runes in Arceuus[edit | edit source]
From level 77 onwards the player can train Runecraft in Arceuus by crafting blood runes at level 77, or soul runes at level 90. It requires significantly less attention compared to other methods, and also provides some passive Mining and Crafting experience. Both methods are also profitable; blood runes offer better profit but offer slower experience, soul runes offer faster experience but are much less profitable.
Players will need to have 100% Arceuus favour, a chisel (can be obtained at the runestone mine), and a pickaxe of any kind for this method. It is also strongly recommended to have a high Agility level (78+ recommended) and the graceful outfit for faster run energy restoration. Level 73 Agility is required for the western rock scramble shortcut.
Completion of the Medium Kourend & Kebos Diary will grant the player 5% chance to mine 2 dense essence blocks at once (but no additional crafting/mining experience is gained), which increases overall experience rates slightly. Players that have completed the elite tasks of the Kourend & Kebos diary will receive 10% additional blood runes, however no extra experience is given. A higher Mining level is also slightly helpful, as the essence stone depletes less frequently with a higher Mining level. The special attack of the Dragon or Crystal pickaxes can be used to boost the player's Mining level above level 99, but otherwise the type of pickaxe does not matter for mining dense essence blocks, as blocks are only obtained every 9 ticks.
Runecrafting and general tips[edit | edit source]
It is best to suicide your inventory at an Item Retrieval Service as the more inventory space you have, the higher your experience rates will be.
Starting at the Arceuus essence mine, mine a full inventory of dense essence blocks, use them on the Dark Altar to create dark essence blocks. Run back to the essence mine and use a chisel on the dark essence blocks to create dark essence fragments while running back to the mine. Mine a second inventory of essence blocks, use them on the Dark Altar, chisel 1 dark essence block and head to the runecrafting altar. Craft runes at the altar, chisel the second inventory of dark essence blocks into fragments, craft runes once more and return to the essence mine.
Players who have completed the elite tasks of the Lumbridge & Draynor Diary and have a revitalisation pool and fairy ring in their player-owned house can alternatively use Teleport to house to make the procedure slightly faster and remove the need for the graceful outfit. A construction cape or rune pouch with law, dust, and an empty spot for the crafted runes will allow for no lost inventory slots. For blood runecrafting, after making a second inventory of dark essence blocks teleport to your house, restore run energy with the pool, use the fairy ring CIS and run to the altar. For soul runecrafting, after crafting runes at the altar teleport to your house, restore run energy with the pool, use the fairy ring CIS and return to the essence mine.
If you are a low combat level, you run the risk of the nearby skeletons attacking you. While you shouldn't get one-hit, equipping a shield and being careful where you AFK is important.

Levels 77–90/99: Blood runes[edit | edit source]
At level 77, players can craft blood runes that yield 23.8 experience per dark essence fragment, adding to a total of 24.425 experience. Players can gain up to 38,500 experience per hour, while also passively gaining around 5,100 Mining and 6,800 Crafting experience per hour.
The method should output roughly 1632 blood runes per hour depending on your diary completion. Selling these to Ali Morrisane would net you 326,400 gold per hour. However, blood runes are needed for barrage spells and they are very expensive when bought from a magic shop, so it is best to keep the runes for barrage Slayer. A lot of blood runes are also needed to use sanguinesti staff and scythe of vitur for high-level bossing.
Players that have completed the elite tasks of the Kourend & Kebos diary will receive 10% additional blood runes, however no extra experience is given.
Tip: If you are running to the altar, click on the minimap to get to the blood altar with fewer clicks.
Levels 90–99: Soul runes[edit | edit source]
At level 90, players can craft soul runes that yield 29.75 experience per dark essence fragment, adding to a total of 30.375 experience. Players can gain up to 45,400 experience per hour, while also passively gaining around 4,600 Mining and 6,100 Crafting experience per hour.
The method should output roughly 1632 soul runes per hour depending on your diary completion. Selling these to Ali Morrisane would net you 244,800 gold per hour. Soul runes generally do not have a lot uses, except when casting Blood Barrage when killing God Wars Dungeon bosses, so it is recommended to sell them.
