Runecraft is used as both a source of runes both for Magic spells and for profit through selling them. Training Runecraft as an Ultimate Ironman was classically quite a difficult task, requiring significant preparation and inventory space for many methods. However, training methods within Great Kourend such as finding books in the Arceuus Library and crafting runes with dark essence fragments make it much more reasonable for Ultimate Ironman players to train the skill.

Early Training - Quests, Lamps, Tears of Guthix[edit | edit source]

Many Runecraft training methods, such as finding books at the Arceuus Library (see below) scale their experience gains based on the player's current Runecraft level. For this reason, it is usually recommended to get some quick, early levels by doing quests that reward Runecraft experience.

Other quests such as The Slug Menace, What Lies Below, and Devious Minds also give Runecraft experience, but have some Runecraft skill requirements of their own.

Some players also opt to use experience lamps earned from various activities to supplement their Runecraft training. Some lamps, such as those rewarded from the X Marks the Spot and Client of Kourend quests can be used on any skill, while others such as most Antique lamps earned from Achievement Diaries can be used on skills once past a certain level requirement.

After the completion of the Tears of Guthix quest, players can use the minigame of the same name to gain a moderate amount of experience in their lowest level skill each week. Training other skills to keep them higher than Runecraft will ensure this weekly experience will always go to Runecraft. It should be noted that completion of the Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Achievement Diary increases experience gains at Tears of Guthix by 10%.

One of the fastest methods to train Runecraft is by finding books in the Arceuus Library, and trading them in for books of arcane knowledge. Each book of arcane knowledge gives 4 times the player's Runecraft level in experience, and with good planning and knowledge of the library, a player can collect and turn in upwards of 160 books an hour through this activity assuming stamina potions. Thus, the expected experience rate is around 600*Level per hour.

A player on the top floor of the library.

This method can be started at any Runecraft level, though the higher the level, the faster the experience gains. Energy potions, Super energy potions, and Stamina potions in particular can drastically improve the experience rates, by allowing for faster fetching of the books. While the activity can be done with limited inventory space, having space in the inventory to hold multiple books enables the high experience rates that make this training method worth doing.

The strategy involves asking one of the three NPC's on the bottom floor with the right-click "Help" option. Sam, Professor Gracklebone or Villia will request a book from the library. While running to grab the book they have asked for, you can pick up some extra ones along the way for future book requests. Being prepared and having as many books on you as possible allows you to string together book returns for faster experience per hour. You must run back and forth between two of the NPC's as you cannot use the same one twice in a row. Upon recieving a request for a book you don't have on you, run back to the bookshelves and claim your runecrafting experience using the books of arcane knowledge and holding down 2, clicking all of the ones you have earned to gain experience while running. The book's locations stay where they are but are reset every 80-100 minutes and are different on every world, so be prepared to find their new locations when they move.

Ourania Altar[edit | edit source]

With the completion of the Lunar Diplomacy quest and the unlocking of the Ourania Teleport spell, Runecrafting at the Ourania Altar becomes a viable training method. This is a good place to use any noted pure essence received through Slayer or other Combat training.

Eniola, who serves as a bank within the Ourania Cave, will unnote pure essence for the cost of any 20 non-combination runes, with a quick-deal option to set up the preferred rune type. Having more space in the inventory allows for more pure essence to be used per run, increasing experience rates. For this purpose, mind runes are a popular choice, as they are cheap to buy in packs from Magic shops, and can also be gotten in large amounts from Barrows.

Common sources for noted pure essence include Twisted Banshee, Gargoyles, Skeletal Wyverns, Wyrms, Zulrah and Chambers of Xeric. With completion of the various tiers of the Ardougne Diary, Wizard Cromperty will also provide daily noted pure essence to the player. Training at Ourania Altar can yield 20k-47k experience per hour, depending on Runecraft level, pouches, and inventory space. This makes it a slower, but less click-intensive alternative to the Arceuus Library method for mid-level Runecraft training. Below are the expected experience rates for the activity, though your rate might be lower depending on exact setup.

With level 77 RunecraftRunecraft icon.png and 100% Arceuus favour, you now have access to craft Blood runes. Level 73 AgilityAgility icon.png is also highly recommended for a very useful shortcut. The medium tier of the Kourend & Kebos Diary gives a 5% chance at receiving two Dense essence blocks, and the elite tier of diary gives an additional 10% blood runes when crafting them. A set of Graceful is highly recommended as well, as this method involves a lot of running. Crafting soul runes over blood runes has the advantage of being higher experience per hour, but ends up being less profit. If you are a low combat level, you run the risk of the nearby skeletons attacking you. While you shouldn't get one-hit, equipping a shield and being careful where you AFK is important.

It is highly recommended you suicide your inventory at a Item Retrieval Service as the more inventory space you have, the higher your experience rates will be. To start, mine an inventory of dense essence blocks. When you have a full inventory, run to the Dark Altar to infuse your blocks into dark essence blocks. Once you have done this, make your way back to the mine and chisel your infused dark essence blocks into dark essence fragments. Chiseling while you run, you should be able to finish the inventory by the time you make it back. Mine a second inventory of essence blocks and return to the Dark Altar once more. Infuse your second inventory but this time make your way towards the Soul Altar. It's best to use your minimap so you can click and wait for your character to make its way over there. Craft your first round of fragments into soul runes. This makes way for you to chisel the dark essence blocks you have into more dark essence fragments. Craft your second batch, then return to the mine by following the path you came until you see the nearby Agility shortcut, and repeat.

The Arceuus essence mine, where players mine dense essence blocks.

Your expected experience rate is 38.5k RunecraftRunecraft icon.png per hour, as well as 5.1k MiningMining icon.png per hour and 6.8k CraftingCrafting icon.png per hour and an output of roughly 1632 Blood runes depending on your diary completion. Selling these to Ali Morrisane would net you 326k gold per hour, but it is recommended that you keep the runes to use for barrage Slayer. Another thing worth noting is at the sacrifice of three inventory spaces you can fletch either Broad arrows or Headless arrows while you are running to the altar, making fletching more efficient.

90+ - Soul Runecrafting[edit | edit source]

With level 90 RunecraftRunecraft icon.png and 100% Arceuus favour, you may now craft Soul runes. Level 49 AgilityAgility icon.png is also highly recommended for a very useful shortcut. The medium tier of the Kourend & Kebos Diary gives a 5% chance at receiving two Dense essence blocks, further improving rates. Crafing soul runes over blood runes has the advantage of being higher experience per hour, but ends up being less profit.
