Brewing is part of the Cooking skill that allows players to create alcoholic drinks, specifically ales and cider, by fermenting ingredients. They all provide temporary skill boosts for varying skills as well as lowering some combination of Attack, Strength, or Defence. Every ale and cider has a mature form which increases both the negative and positive boosts

There are only two places where brewing can be done, fermenting vats, one in eastern Keldagrim on the 1st floor[UK]2nd floor[US] of the Laughing Miner Pub and the other in Port Phasmatys underneath the The Green Ghost pub.

Brewing Process[edit | edit source]

Ales[edit | edit source]

The main ingredients for ales are: 2 bucket of water, 2 barley malt, 1 ale yeast, and optionally: 1 the stuff

Steps
1. Use 2 bucket of water on the fermenting vat
2. Use 2 barley malt on the fermenting vat
3. Optional: Use 1 the stuff on the fermenting vat, increasing the chance to mature the ale from 5% to 64%[1]
4. Use the ingredients specific to the brew type you want to make
5. Use 1 ale yeast on the fermenting vat
6. Wait for 3 x 640 minute cycles (with the stuff added, between 3 x 640 and 16 x 640 minutes)
7. Use the valve to drain the completed ale into the barrel
8. Use 8 beer glasses or 2 calquat kegs on the barrel full of the completed ale

Cider[edit | edit source]

The main ingredients for cider are: 4 buckets of apple mush, 1 ale yeast

Steps
1. Use 4 buckets of apple mush on the fermenting vat
2. Use 1 ale yeast on the fermenting vat
3. Wait for three 640 minutes farming cycles
4. Use the valve to drain the completed ale into the barrel
5. Use 8 beer glasses or 2 calquat kegs on the barrel full of the completed cider

Fermentation[edit | edit source]

Brewing relies on the same farming cycles as hardwood trees, redwood trees, and anima.[2] There are three stages that each brew must go through in order to complete, advancing to the next stage at the next growth tick[3]. Brewing only occurs every 640 minutes, following the same Farming timer as Hardwoods, Redwood, and Anima. However, there is an offset for farming ticks that is different for each player and persists through logins[4]. To determine this offset, note the time when a hardwood, redwood, or anima patch grows one stage, or when a brew completes and compare with the closest time on the table below. Apply the time difference to every time in the table. For example, if a brew completes at 10:18 AM on Day 1, subtract 22 minutes from each time listed.

Cycle length Main crops Base growth times(GMT)
640 minutes Hardwood, Redwood, Anima, Brews Day 1: 12:00 AM, 10:40 AM, 9:20 PM
Day 2: 8:00 AM, 6:40 PM
Day 3: 5:20 AM, 4:00 PM
Day 4: 2:40 AM, 1:20 PM

In the table above, Sunday 25 October 2020 is Day 1. (Note: This is usually today, but does not always update immediately when the date changes. Refresh the page to force it to update.)

The first stage begins immediately after adding ale yeast. The second stage will occur on the next growth tick where it is possible for the still fermenting brew to become mature. The final stage has three possible outcomes: a completed normal ale, a mature ale, or a bad ale. Bad ales are green and useless, it must be drained from the vat then from the barrel. There is a 5% chance for an ale to go bad.[confirmation needed]

Standard times to complete when not using the stuff, is at minimum 1,281 minutes, about 21 hours and 20 minutes, or 1 minute past 3 growth ticks. At maximum is 1,920 minutes or 32 hours which is the full 3 growth cycles. This depends on when you start the fermentation process during the current cycle.

Mature brews[edit | edit source]

With normal brewing, a player can randomly make a full vat of matured ale, however a majority of the time it will complete as a non-matured ale. The chances of ale maturing is 5%, but adding the stuff increases this chance to 64%[5]. Cider is the only brew that the stuff is not used for, it must always become mature naturally. Mature ales provide stronger boosts, heal more, and provide larger deboosts. The stuff is purchasable from Honest Jimmy for 50 pieces of eight, a reward from the Trouble Brewing minigame. If attempting to make mature ales, it is highly recommended using the stuff. It must be added right after the barley malt is added, it is not possible to put it in afterwards.

Note: "The Stuff" is not required to make a mature ale, it simply increases the chances.

Standard times to complete when not using the stuff, is at minimum 1,281 minutes, about 21 hours and 20 minutes, or 1 minute past 3 growth ticks. At maximum is 10,240 minutes or 1 week. This will depend on when you start the fermentation process during the current cycle.
