A player completes a hard Treasure Trail and receives their rewards.

Treasure Trails is an activity which involves solving clue scrolls, rarely dropped items dropped by the majority of monsters in RuneScape. Clue scrolls contain clues and riddles for the player to solve to eventually find a reward casket, which could contain unique rewards. A clue scroll can be obtained randomly from killing monsters, playing minigames, looting implings, fishing, woodcutting, or mining.

There are six different levels of clue scrolls. The higher level ones being more difficult to complete. Players can own up to one clue scroll of each level at a time.

It should be noted, that if a player dies in the Wilderness with a clue scroll (or reward casket) in level 20 or higher Wilderness, the clue scroll will disappear. Regardless of whether it's a PvP death or not, unless it is an item kept on death or if the player has a clue box, in which case the player will lose the box but keep the scroll. In lower Wilderness however (level 20 or lower), in PvP death, an unprotected clue scroll will stay on the ground for up to one hour. If players die to a monster they will always keep their clue scroll, whether protected or not, as it is an untradeable item.

History[edit | edit source]

Difficulty levels[edit | edit source]

Clue scrolls have six types of difficulty levels, these are: beginner, easy, medium, hard, elite and master. More difficult trails provide more valuable rewards.

Only one clue scroll of the same difficulty may be in player's possession at a time, however it is possible to possess multiple scrolls of different difficulties each.

Getting there[edit | edit source]

There is no fixed location for Treasure Trails, the clue scrolls may send you throughout the whole of Gielinor. Therefore it is recommended to have access to as many teleports and transportation systems as possible.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

Some clues will require access to areas which may require quests, will require items that need a certain skill requirement in order to wear, wield or access, or will give a skill challenge that requires a certain level in that skill. The tables below show the highest skill requirement, in order to complete every hard clue. Quest skill requirements are not noted in these tables. Temporary skill boosts can be used for most non-combat skill challenges.

Strategies[edit | edit source]

See the sections below for the most efficient setups for each clue scroll level. For more information see their individual guides on the page linked above.

  • Use the skull sceptre to teleport to the Stronghold of Security to kill minotaurs for beginner clue scrolls.
  • Use the right skull halves dropped by the minotaurs to recharge the skull sceptre.
  • The chef's hat can be swapped for any full helm if more defence bonuses are needed.
  • If your Defence level is high enough to easily kill minotaurs, you can choose to bank the platebody and legs for weight reduction purposes.
  • A black pickaxe is prefered, since it weighs 0 kg, thus saving a bit of run energy over any other pickaxe.

STASH units[edit | edit source]

STASH units (short for "Store Things And Stuff Here"), also known as hidey holes, are storage units for emote clue items, saving bank space and bank trips for players who do Treasure Trails frequently.

There are 107 STASH units in total found throughout RuneScape. These locations are initially labelled as inconspicuous bushes/crates/holes/rocks, and, once built, become usable STASH units. Players can check which units they've already built/filled by visiting Watson and reading the noticeboard within his house.

Depending on the scenery the emote clue is located in, STASH may differ in appearance to appear as inconspicuous as possible. For a list of the locations of all STASH units as well as its building materials, visit this page.
