This guide is aimed towards players who wish to kill Zulrah using a mage-only loadout. While a mage-only loadout does not provide optimal kills per hour, it is arguably the easiest method when it comes to learning the mechanics of the boss and obtaining the 1 kill required for the western hard diary.

For general information on Zulrah's fight mechanics or alternative strategies, please refer to Zulrah/Strategies. This guide assumes you have at least gone over the fight mechanics on that page.

Requirements[edit | edit source]

It is possible to defeat Zulrah with a lower Magic level and a weaker method such as Iban Blast, however, it is strongly recommended against attempting to do so.

While Zulrah can be fought with only partial completion of Regicide, it is still recommended to finish the quest as full completion is required for the usage of Zul-Andra teleports and the BJS fairy ring.

Recommendations[edit | edit source]

The following skills will make trips to Zulrah a bit easier, but are optional:

Equipment[edit | edit source]

Players can choose to go with a standard magic loadout or Void knight mage loadout, whichever is best available. For reference, the Void knight mage loadout is better than the infinity and mystic robes loadouts, but worse than the Ahrim's and ancestral robes loadouts.

NOTE: If a player is having trouble with countering venom, they can swap their head slot item with a charged Serpentine helm, as this helmet grants full immunity to becoming envenomed. Consequently, the player will no longer need to bring any form of anti-venom, freeing up 1 inventory slot. Note, however, that like anti-venoms, this helm does not make players immune to the damage from Zulrah's venom clouds; players will still take damage if standing in one.

Getting there[edit | edit source]

Players can reach Zul-Andra by:

Before players can fight Zulrah, they will need to speak to High Priestess Zul-Harcinqa about becoming a sacrifice. Otherwise, Zul-Gwenwynig will not allow players to take the boat to Zulrah's Shrine. This only needs to be done once.

Fight overview[edit | edit source]

Zulrah's serpentine and magma form are weak to magic, with serpentine being the weakest, while its tanzanite form is highly resistant to magic. Because of this, the player should always avoid Zulrah's tanzanite form during mage-only runs. This will be done by utilizing the two stone pillars on the island as to block Zulrah's line of sight with the player. Furthermore, it is highly recommended for players to skip Rotation 4 when doing mage-only runs, as this rotation consists of the most phases with Zulrah in its tanzanite form, as well as being the most difficult of the four rotations.

Rotations[edit | edit source]

Only Rotations 1, 2, and 3 will be detailed below as Rotation 4 is intended to be skipped. Players can skip a rotation by logging out (if they're not currently under attack), or by teleporting out. If a player had logged out during the fight, they will be returned to Zul-Andra upon logging back in. Due to the complexity of the rotations, it is sometimes recommended for new players to only learn one rotation at a time by logging out until they get the desired rotation.

The images below have various visual elements to aid in determining phases and positioning when fighting Zulrah:

  • Top left text: This value states the phase of the rotation. The last phase of every rotation will show this as a green rotational arrow, as to indicate the reset phase of the rotation.
  • Top right text: This text states the rotation. The last phase of every rotation will show this text's value as a green rotational arrow, as to indicate the reset phase of the rotation.
  • Yellow tile markers: These tiles are commonly used throughout Zulrah runs. Every image will contain the same marked tiles as to provide a symmetrical reference point for each phase's positioning.
  • Circled tile: Every image will have 1 or 2 tiles circled by a white circle. This is the tile the player is to stand on during that phase. If the tile is not already marked yellow, then a white tile marker will be provided.
  • White arrow path: This depicts if a player needs to move to a second position during the same phase. There will be two circled tiles shown, numbered by their order of positioning. The moment at which the player should move is clarified in text along the white arrow path.
  • Large colored circles: These depict Zulrah's form and position; green for Zulrah's serpentine form, red for Zulrah's magma form, and blue for Zulrah's tanzanite form.
  • Idle text: If a circled tile has the text "Idle" above it, then the player is to simply wait out the phase as they will be hiding from Zulrah's tanzanite form. It would be wise to use this time to heal or kill snakelings when needed.
  • Diagonal half-arrows: These indicate the player is to alternate their position from one tile to the other. These only appear during certain magma form phases.
  • Prayer icons: If a prayer icon is displayed on a colored circle, then the player is to use the corresponding prayer during this phase.
  • Multi-colored semi-circle with rotating arrows: This indicates Zulrah is in its "Jad" phase (see Zulrah/Strategies#Fight_overview). Zulrah will alternate between magic and ranged attacks during this phase, with the first style determined by the rotation. The first prayer to use is indicated by the prayer at the top of the multi-colored semi-circle, with the second at the bottom. Players will need to alternate these prayers accordingly.

Note: Keep in mind that all images have the island facing south, as this is considered to be the best orientation to have the camera during the fight. This means left is east, right is west, up is south, and middle is middle. Zulrah will only ever appear in these 4 locations.

Phase Description Strategy Image
1 Zulrah appears in the middle in its serpentine form, spewing out 4 venom cloud barrages. Stand on the circled tile and attack Zulrah.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P1.png
2 Zulrah appears in the middle in its magma form, attacking twice with Melee. Attack Zulrah once, then move to the other tile. Attack Zulrah again and then move back to the previous tile. Attach Zulrah once more. As soon as Zulrah is changing phase, it is advised to run through the venom clouds when getting in to the next phase's position. This will still deal less damage overall than getting hit by one of Zulrah's attacks from the next phase.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P2.png
3 Zulrah appears in the middle in its tanzanite form, attacking with Magic and/or Ranged 4 times. Stand on the circled tile (diagonal to the pillar) and idle. As soon as Zulrah changes phase, run to the next position.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P3.png
4 Zulrah appears in the south in its serpentine form, attacking with Ranged 5 times, followed by 2 snakeling orbs, 2 venom cloud barrages, and 2 snakeling orbs. Pray Protect from Missiles, stand on the circled tile, and attack Zulrah.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P4.png
5 Zulrah appears in the middle in its magma form, attacking twice with Melee. Continue standing on the circled tile and attack Zulrah. This tile is a safespot for Zulrah's magma form. As soon as Zulrah changes phase, run to the next position.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P5.png
6 Zulrah appears in the west in its tanzanite form, attacking with both Magic and/or Ranged. Stand on the circled tile (adjacent to the pillar) and idle.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P6.png
7 Zulrah appears in the south in its serpentine form, spewing out 3 venom cloud barrages, followed by 4 snakeling orbs. Move 1 tile down (north) and attack Zulrah.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P7.png
8 Zulrah appears in the south in its tanzanite form, attacking with both Magic and Ranged 5 times, followed by an alternating series of 5 snakeling orbs and venom cloud barrages. Move another tile down (north) again and idle. Once Zulrah de-aggros, move to the second circled tile. Prepare for the Jad phase by healing up and praying Protect from Missiles.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P8.png
9 JAD PHASE: Zulrah appears in the west in its serpentine form, alternating between Ranged and Magic attacks 10 times, starting with ranged. It will then spew out 4 venom cloud barrages. Start with Protect from Missiles and attack Zulrah. As soon as you see Zulrah's Ranged attack, switch to Protect from Magic (even if the attack hasn't reached you yet). As soon as you see Zulrah's Magic attack, switch back to Protect from Missiles (again, even if the attack hasn't reached you yet). Repeat this process for majority of the phase. Try to keep an eye on your health in case the damage from the snakelings builds up too much. If you are consistent with the overhead prayers, then you will not take any damage from Zulrah during this phase. As soon as Zulrah stops attacking, you may disable your prayer(s) and run to the next position, healing and potting if needed along the way.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P9.png
10 Zulrah appears in the middle in its magma form, attacking twice with Melee. Attack Zulrah once, then move to the other tile. Attack Zulrah again and then move back to the previous tile. Repeat this for the remainder of the phase.
ZulrahMageOnlyR1P10.png
11 Zulrah appears in the middle in its serpentine form, attacking with Ranged 5 times, followed by 4 venom cloud barrages. Pray Protect from Missiles, stand on the circled tile, and attack Zulrah. If you do not kill Zulrah by the end of this phase, then the rotations reset, randomly choosing a new rotation. Note that this phase will count as the new rotation's first phase.
