Volcanic sulphur is a mineral that can be mined within the Lovakengj sulphur mine. Volcanic sulphur deposits require level 42 Mining and an equipped breathing filter (such as a gas mask, face mask, or slayer helmet) to mine, and grant 25 Mining experience and an average of 0.033% Lovakengj favour per volcanic sulphur mined.[1]
Volcanic sulphur is used along with juniper charcoal, saltpetre, and a pot to create a dynamite pot. Adding a ball of wool to the dynamite pot creates dynamite, granting 0.1% Lovakengj favour. Including the sulphur, each dynamite crafted is worth approximately 0.13% favour, meaning 490 volcanic sulphur is required to be made into dynamite for 65% Lovakengj favour. However, juniper charcoal takes 16 hours to make, so it will take more overall time having to wait.
It takes mining approximately 925 volanic sulphur to get 30% Lovakengj favour, while 100% will be approximately 3,804 volcanic sulphur mined.
A breathing filter is mandatory to attempt to mine volcanic sulphur; if unequipped, a warning is shown in the chatbox stating that "You'll choke on the fumes if you try to mine without protection." In addition, moving gas clouds within the mine will deal rapid hits of 3-5 damage per tick to unprotected players instead of the usual 1-2 damage per tick with protection.
It is recommended to mine the volcanic sulphur deposits from the south or from the west to avoid taking excessive damage since the gas clouds cannot damage you when directly south or west of you.
Players can extend their stay at the sulphur deposits if they also wear the Hitpoints Cape and Regen Bracelet, as in combination these provide additional natural healing (+4 hp/min).
The sulphur clouds may be safespotted by luring a spider to the western-most sulphur deposit. This can be done by attacking the spider with auto-retaliate off (casting curse spells or splashing recommended). The safespot setup requires the player to stand on the west square positioned south of the western most deposit with the spider attacking from the east. This safespot works as long as you do not move, step on the spider, or others players walking on you or the spider. Mining using this safespot will not show the mining animation, but you will continue to mine.
It is recommended that OSRS Mobile players activate 'tap to drop' (located within Mobile Controls Settings) whilst AFK mining sulphur, as unwanted sulphur can be dropped quickly.
One volcanic sulphur piece is used in A Kingdom Divided quest.
