Holding "5" and "+" simultaneously (Windows Mouse Keys)

[edit source]

Pressing and holding them at the same time will cause continuous, uninterrupted left clicks (similar to how pressing and holding 2 letter keys at the same time will alternate letters in the chatbox). Logically, such an action would seem to be against the spirit of the rules, but is still a part of Windows Mouse Keys, so it may be "technically" legal? I don't recommend doing this as I'd imagine it could result in, at minimum, a false ban, but I feel like official clarification from Jagex is needed. Jamamon (talk) 03:29, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

Much of this article is based on things that happened in 2013; it may need significant revision to reflect Jagex's current point of view. Mod Beano from Jagex Support had this to say in January 2025 about using a game controller to give input to a mobile tablet:

We cannot offer comment on specific pieces of hardware or software that users wish to use with the game. Information on the use of third-party hardware/software and what is and isn't allowed can be found under the relevant section of our Rules.

As explained there: "If you have any doubt that something you are thinking of using could be considered breaking this rule our advice is to not use it."

I don't believe that Mouse Keys itself has any "official" status anymore; rather, accessibility software is widely available by default on all operating systems, accessibility software is acceptable if it doesn't break the current rules, and Jagex generally claims to be able to tell the difference between players who are providing human input for every action versus players who are automating actions (such as clicking more than once per human input).
I find Jagex's lack of clarification here very frustrating, especially the lack of an explicit list of allowable behavior. But in the case of your specific question, I think it's clear that holding "5" and "+" simultaneously would be a bannable offense. ChxPotatoCurry (talk) 15:41, 30 March 2025 (UTC)

Thank you for the article, Queen Emvee. I've added this more clearly to the intro. To be clear, this is allowed, including since 2017; but only the default OS version is allowed to do anything beyond remapping keys, which is an important clarification that's now included.
