A struggling sapling is a plant that appears as part of the Struggling Sapling Forestry event, where players gather piles of resources to create mulch to give to the sapling to help it grow.

To maximise the mulch's nutritional value when nurturing the sapling, players will need to obtain the correct combination of resource piles that will have spawned alongside the sapling (droppings, green leaves, rotting leaves, splintered bark, and wild mushrooms). Three materials are needed per sapling and the order in which they are given matters. Different amounts of anima-infused bark are rewarded depending on what percentage of nutritional value the combination of materials is. Nurturing the sapling within the allotted time will turn it into a thriving sapling, granting Woodcutting and Farming experience, as well as extra anima bark. In addition, fully nurturing the sapling gives the message: Well done, you've saved the sapling and allowed it to flourish! It appears to have a gift for you....

Failing to nurture the sapling will not give any extra rewards and give the message: The sapling withers due to lack of nutrients.

Note that these values are without either the Lumberjack or Forestry outfit and without the invisible group boost. If a player has either set worn and chopped the same tree with other players, the Woodcutting experience may be higher by at least 1.025x the experience mentioned above.

Strategies

Inspecting the sapling will show the player the best and most recent combination of materials that were given, whilst correct materials will be highlighted in green. The quickest way to discover the perfect mulch is to take three of one pile and give it to the sapling. For example, a player would create mulch made out of three wild mushrooms and give it to the sapling to check whether it is the first, second, or third ingredient. Afterward, a player would then try making mulch from three of another pile and giving it to the sapling again until the player has discovered the perfect mulch.

It is better to do 70% (two correctly-ordered mulches) if the time it takes to do 100% (all three correctly-ordered mulches) is at least 1.5x longer than the 70%. For example, if it takes 9 ticks to run, gather, and deposit all 3 correct mulches but it only takes 6 ticks (or less) to run, gather, and deposit 2 correct mulches, then it is better to spam the 70% route instead of 100%. This is often the case if 2/3 of the mulches are the same or very close together and the other one is relatively far away.
