Name origins

[edit source]

As aspects of GentleTractor's legendary reddit post are making it into the game in the near future, he has been kind enough to divulge the origins of their names to me; below was his answer verbatim:

Varlamore

[edit source]

Varlamore is the one word that I kind of constructed out of base word sounds, rather than having a word that means something. Basically went through and listed out each of the major kingdom & region names and tried to pick out the most "RuneScapey" qualities of them to find a kingdom name that fit. Ended up settling on a 3 syllable word, decided to start with V, as its a less common letter and there weren't any significant kingdoms/regions starting with that letter - only notable place being the city Varrock, which I though might be nice to take the first syllable of for a subtle bit of familiarity. Then just added extra bits to it 'til something sounded nice, so got to Varla that way. Then it needed a little "more" to bump it into 3 syllables and, hey, there ya go, Varlamore.

Auburnvale

[edit source]

Really simple one, I really like Autumn. 😄 And wanted to see what an autumnal themed location in game would look like. So just picked a word that kind of worked for a nod to Autumn & the associated brown-orange colour pallet, so Auburn, then adding another suffix to make it sound more medieval-fantasy. Wasn't really 'til this final Varlamore map concept though that it kind of grew into its name as I could finally put it in a proper little valley (i.e. vale).

Avium Savannah

[edit source]

For the OG map, I wanted to put Civitas into a unique biome that had a bit of a Kharidian desert vibe (in terms of feeling a bit hostile & open), so once again I started by looking at what biome types we hadn't explored in game, and settled on a vast savannah type. Knowing Civitas had some Latin routes to it, I figured it made sense to try and contiue the trend the Jmods had for that by picking a Latin name for the savannah. Searched a number of different terms to do with vastness, emptyness, loneliness, wastelands, etc. Ended up with the word āvĭum, which I then anglicised by removing the diacritics/accents to simply "Avium".

Supposedly, it means:

  1. Pathless region, wild waste, wilderness, desert
  2. Lonely or solitary places

That's purely me trusting some random online latin dictionary though.

"Players must first travel to Varlamore via Regulus before other methods of accessing it are allowed." The Fairy Ring (AJP) will allow you to travel to Varlamore prior to traveling via Regulus

This is the very thing I tried first on release and it did not work. Even now, it gives the message You can't use the fairy ring to go there until you have visited Varlamore. -- Recent uploads SpineTalkContribs 14:58, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

it would be nice if the map icons had a tooltip showing what they have, like what ores at a mine or what fishing spots
