Starting the quest

[edit | edit source]

Before the quest is started

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player does not have 35 Runecraft:
    • Player: Hello there!
    • Rat Burgiss: Oh, hello. I'd love to chat right now, but I'm a bit busy. Perhaps you could come back and chat another time?
    • Player: Of course. Sorry to bother you!
    • Rat Burgiss: Not at all! Farewell!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player has 35 Runecraft:
    • Rat Burgiss: Hello there. I'm Rat.
    • Player: You're a what?
    • Rat Burgiss: No, no. My name is Rat. Rat Burgiss.
    • Player: Ohhhhh, well, what's up, Ratty?
    • Rat Burgiss: It's Rat, thank you. And I, uh...heh...I seem to be in a bit of trouble here, as you can probably see.
    • Player: Why, what seems to be the matter?
    • Rat Burgiss: Well, I'm a trader by nature and I was on the way to Varrock with my cart here when I was set upon by outlaws! They ransacked my cart and stole some very important papers that I must get back.
    • Select an option
    • That's awful! You're lucky to be alive!
      • Player: That's awful! You're lucky to be alive!
      • Rat Burgiss: Yes, I know! I don't know how I survived.
      • Player: Maybe you weren't worth killing?
      • Rat Burgiss: ...
      • Rat Burgiss: Look, do you want to help me or not?
      • Start the What Lies Below quest?
      • Yes.
        • Player: Of course! Tell me what you need me to do.
        • Rat Burgiss: Right, now I heard those outlaws say something about having a small camp site somewhere to the north-west of Varrock. They headed off to the north-west of here. They took 5 pages with them.
        • If the player has inventory space:
          • Rat Burgiss: Kill the outlaws and get those papers back from them for me. Here's a folder in which you can put the pages. Be careful, though; those outlaws are tough.
          • (Player receives An empty folder.)
          • Rat Burgiss: When you find all 5 pages, put them in the folder and bring them back to me!
          • Player: Don't worry, Ratty! I won't let you down!
          • Rat Burgiss: ...
          • (End of dialogue)
        • If the player does not have inventory space:
          • Rat Burgiss: Oh, wait a minute. I was going to give you a folder in which to collect my papers, but you haven't got enough room for it. Talk to me when you do.
          • (End of dialogue)
      • No.
        • Player: No, sorry, I have to go!
        • Rat Burgiss: Oh well. I'll just wait here then and maybe some nice person will help me. Perhaps...one day...
        • Player: Uh, are you guilt tripping me?
        • Rat Burgiss: No! Not at all! Nuh-uh! Nope! Hardly! Noooo, no no no!
        • Rat Burgiss: Well, maybe a bit...
        • Player: Well, good luck with that!
        • Rat Burgiss: Thanks!
        • Player: No, that's not what...oh, never mind!
        • (End of dialogue)
    • The papers were the only valuable thing you had?
      • Player: The papers were the only valuable thing you had?
      • Rat Burgiss: Uh...yes. I guess so.
      • Player: So you don't sell anything worth having?
      • Rat Burgiss: Ah! Uhh...no, not really.
      • Player: You're not much of a trader are you?
      • Rat Burgiss: No...I mean yes... Look, that's besides the point. Can you help me?
      • (Same as above)
    • Shall I get them back for you?
      • Player: Shall I get them back for you?
      • Rat Burgiss: You mean you want to help?
      • (Same as above)
    • Oh dear. Well, I hope you get to Varrock okay!
      • Player: Oh dear. Well, I hope you get to Varrock okay!
      • Rat Burgiss: Uh...so you can't help me?
      • Player: Sorry. I'm a bit busy right now.
      • Rat Burgiss: Don't you want another quest?
      • Player: No thanks. I'm too busy right now.
      • Rat Burgiss: Well, fine!
      • Player: Fine!
      • Rat Burgiss: Good!
      • Player: Good!!
      • Rat Burgiss: So go then!
      • Player: I'm going!
      • Rat Burgiss: Go then!
      • Player: I'm gone!
      • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Rat Burgiss again

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player did not have inventory space for the folder:
    • Rat Burgiss: Ah! You're back! Excellent!
    • Player: Of course! Tell me what you need me to do.
    • Rat Burgiss: Right, now I heard those outlaws say something about having a small camp site somewhere to the north-west of Varrock. They headed off to the north-west of here. They took 5 pages with them.
    • Rat Burgiss: Kill the outlaws and get those papers back from them for me. Here's a folder in which you can put the pages. Be careful, though; those outlaws are tough.
    • Rat Burgiss: When you find all 5 pages, put them in the folder and bring them back to me!
    • Player: Don't worry, Ratty! I won't let you down!
    • Rat Burgiss: ...
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player has the folder and talks to Rat Burgiss again:
    • Player: I can't remember what I am supposed to do!
    • Rat Burgiss: Head north-west from here into the forest north-west of Varrock. Find the Outlaw Camp and kill the outlaws there.
    • Rat Burgiss: Collect the pages of my document for me and put them into the folder I gave you. When the folder contains 5 pages, bring it to me!
    • If the player lost the folder:
      • Player: I lost the folder you gave me. Do you have another one?
      • Rat Burgiss: Sure. Here you go. I'll add it to your account.
      • (Player receives An empty folder.)
      • Player: My account? Am I in debt?
      • Rat Burgiss: No, it's just the way you're standing!
      • Player: Okay, thanks!
      • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the empty folder on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat Burgiss: Yes, that's the folder I gave you. I need you to fill it with pages for me.
    • (End of dialogue)

Collecting the pages

[edit | edit source]

Using the folder and pages on Rat Burgiss

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player uses one of Rat's papers on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat Burgiss: Yes! That's one of my papers! Gather all 5 of them and put them into that folder I gave to you.
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses a used folder on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat Burgiss: Ah! It looks like you have found some of the pages I need. You still need more, though.
    • (End of dialogue)

Using the pages on the folder

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player uses one of the papers on the empty folder:
    • You add the page to the folder that Rat gave you.
    • You need to find [1-4] more page[s].
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the last paper on the used folder:
    • You add the last page to Rat's folder. You should take this back to Rat as soon as possible.
    • You have added all the pages to the folder that Rat gave to you. You should take this folder back to Rat.
    • (End of dialogue)

Reading the documents

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player reads the empty folder:
    • The folder is empty at the moment so there is nothing inside to read!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player reads one of the pages or reads the used folder:
    • The piece of paper appears to contain lots of facts and figures. They look like accounts and lists of items. You're not sure what they all mean.
    • (End of dialogue)

Handing the completed folder over to Rat

[edit | edit source]
  • Player: Hey, Rat! I got your pages back!
  • Rat Burgiss: Excellent! I knew you could help! Let me take those from you, there.
  • (Player gives a full folder and extra pages (if present) to Rat Burgiss.)
  • Rat Burgiss: Now, I liked the way you handled yourself on that last little 'mission' I gave you there, so I'm going to let you in on a little secret!
  • Player: Wait! Wait! Let me guess! You're actually a rich prince in disguise who wants to help poor people like me!?
  • Rat Burgiss: Uhhh...no. No, that's not it. You know, on second thought, I think I'll keep my secret for now. Look, instead, you can do another job for me.
  • Player: All work and no play makes [player name] a dull adventurer!
  • Rat Burgiss: Yes, well, I'm sure that may be the case. However, what I want you to do is take this letter to someone for me. It's in a different language so, trust me, you won't be able to read it.
  • Rat Burgiss: Take it to a wizard named Surok Magis who resides in the Varrock Place Library. I'll see about some sort of reward for your work when I get myself sorted out here.
  • (Player receives a Letter to surok.)
  • Player: Letter. Wizard. Varrock. Library. Got it!
  • Rat Burgiss: Yes, good luck then.
  • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Rat Burgiss again

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player loses the letter to Surok:
    • Player: Rat, I think I lost that letter you gave me!
    • If the player does not have inventory space:
      • Rat Burgiss: That's probably because you've replaced it with something else, by the looks of it! Talk to me when you have some space in your inventory!
      • (Continues below)
    • (Player receives another letter to Surok.)
    • Rat Burgiss: Goodness me! Not much of a messenger, are you? Here's another one; try not to lose it this time! I've charged the parchment to your account.
    • Player: Will you take a cheque?
    • Rat Burgiss: No thanks. I prefer tartan.
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Surok Magis

[edit | edit source]
  • Surok Magis: Hah! Come for my Aphro-Dizzy-Yak spell! Want someone to fall madly in love with you, eh? Not surprised with a face like that, to be honest!
  • Player: I didn't come here to be insulted!
  • Surok Magis: Really? Well, with ears like that, you do surprise me!
  • Player: No, look. I have a letter for you.
  • Surok Magis: Really? Well then, let me see it!
  • If the player does not have the letter:
    • Player: Oh. I had it here a moment ago. Where is it?
    • Surok Magis: Hah! You've lost it already? You can't get good help these days!
    • Player: I'm very sorry! Let me go get another one!
    • Surok Magis: As you must! Now be off with you! I'm busy studying here!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player has the letter:
    • Player: Here it is!
  • Surok Magis: Of all the luck!
  • Player: Why did you destroy the letter?
  • Surok Magis: None of your business! It's a secret!
  • Player: Yes, there seems to be a lot of them going around at the moment.
  • Surok Magis: Of course. Hmmm. However, I could let you in on another secret, if you like?
  • Select an option
  • Go on, then!
    • Player: Go on, then!
    • Surok Magis: My secret is this. I have been spending time here in the palace library trying to discover some ancient spells and magics.
    • Surok Magis: In my research, I have uncovered a most astounding spell that will allow me to transform simple clay into solid gold bars!
    • Player: Okay, what do you need?
    • Surok Magis: I will only need a couple of items. The first is very simple: an ordinary bowl to use as a casting vessel.
    • Surok Magis: You should be able to find one of these at any local store here in Varrock. I would go myself but I am...uh...busy with my research.
    • Surok Magis: The other item is much harder. I need a metal wand infused with chaos magic.
    • Player: How would I get something like that?
    • Surok Magis: Take this metal wand. You will also need 15 chaos runes. When you get to the Chaos Altar, use the wand on the altar itself. This should infuse the runes into the wand.
    • (Player receives a wand and Sin'keth's diary.)
    • Player: How on earth do you know about Runecrafting? I thought only a few people knew of it.
    • Surok Magis: Hah! Don't presume to think that those wizards in their fancy tower are the only people to have heard of Runecrafting! Now pay attention!
    • Surok Magis: You will need to have the 15 chaos runes in your inventory. Make sure you also have either a chaos talisman or chaos tiara to complete the infusion.
    • Player: Where can I get a talisman or a tiara?
    • Surok Magis: I'm afraid I don't know. You will need to search for one.
    • Surok Magis: Bring the infused wand and a bowl back to me and I will make us both rich!
    • Surok Magis: One more thing. I have uncovered information here in the library which may be of use to you. It tells of a safe route to the Chaos Altar that avoids the Wilderness.
    • Player: Great! What is it?
    • Surok Magis: It is an old tome...a history book of sorts. It's somewhere here in the library. I forget where I left it, but it should be easy enough for you to find.
    • Surok Magis: I have also given you a copy of a diary I...uh...acquired. It may also help you to find that which you seek.
    • (End of dialogue)
  • Is it a BIG secret?
    • Player: Is it a BIG secret?
    • Surok Magis: It's a very big secret!
    • Player: Bigger than a house?
    • Surok Magis: Er, yes! It's...
    • Player: Bigger than a volcano??
    • Surok Magis: Yes. Look, it's big, alright? Now listen and I'll tell you.
    • Surok Magis: My secret is this. I have been spending time here in the palace library trying to discover some ancient spells and magics.
    • Surok Magis: In my research, I have uncovered a most astounding spell that will allow me to transform simple clay into solid gold bars!
    • Surok Magis: Now I am ready to use the spell to create all the gold I...uh...the city wants. I would gladly share this gold with you; I simply need a few more things!

    • (End of dialogue)
  • No thanks. I have other things to do for now!
    • Player: No thanks. I have other things to do for now!
    • Surok Magis: Very well, then. I hope these other matters of 'great' importance outweigh the need to make a LOT of gold. A WHOLE lot of gold. Gold. Yes, gold.
    • Player: Uh, why are you repeating yourself like that?
    • Surok Magis: Dramatic effect.
    • Player: Oh.
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Surok Magis again

[edit | edit source]
  • Surok Magis: Ah! You're back. Have you found the things I need yet?
  • Select an option
  • Remind me what I am doing again?
    • Player: Remind me what I am doing again?
    • Surok Magis: Take this metal wand. You will also need 15 chaos runes. When you get to the Chaos Altar, use the wand on the altar itself. This should infuse the runes into the wand.
    • (Same as above)
  • I lost the wand!
    • Player: I lost the wand!
    • Surok Magis: Somehow, I knew that would happen so I have made a few spares for just such an occasion!
    • If the wand is still in the player's inventory:
      • Surok Magis: Here you g...hang on! There's one still in your inventory! I just saw it! You don't need two and they're not worth anything...yet! Now get going already; there's not much time!
      • (End of dialogue)
    • If the wand is in the player's bank:
      • Surok Magis: You would lie to an arch-wizard? There is one in your bank! I can sense it! Go and retrieve that one first!
      • (End of dialogue)
    • If the player has no inventory space:
      • Surok Magis: You have no space for another one! Lose some of that useless junk in your inventory first!
      • (End of dialogue)
    • If the player has inventory space:
      • Surok Magis: Here you are. Try not to lose this one!
      • (End of dialogue)
  • How much gold will I get?
    • Player: How much gold will I get?
    • Surok Magis: Hmmmm. That all depends on how quickly you get me that infused wand! Work fast and well for me, [player name], and I will make you rich, famous and powerful!
    • Player: Really? Powerful, eh? How powerful?
    • Surok Magis: That depends.
    • Player: Depends on what?
    • Surok Magis: On how soon you stop yapping and get me that wand! Now get moving!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • Can I ask about the diary?
    • Player: Can I ask about the diary?
    • Surok Magis: Of course. What would you like to know?
    • Select an option
    • Who is this Sin'keth?
      • Player: Who is this Sin'keth?
      • Surok Magis: Sin'keth Magis? From what I have read, it would appear he was a great leader of the Dagon'hai Mages.
      • Player: The Dagon-what?
      • Surok Magis: Hmph! If you read the diary or perused that tome I mentioned, you would know who they are.
      • Player: Hey, wait! Isn't your last name Magis too? Are you related to him?
      • Surok Magis: No. Not at all. Purely coincidence! Now, haven't you got work to do already?
      • (Shows previous options)
    • Where did it come from?
      • Player: Where did it come from?
      • Surok Magis: How I came to have the diary is of no concern to you!
      • Player: Oooo, tetchy!
      • Surok Magis: I suggest that you concentrate on getting the things I need and stop asking pointless questions!
      • (Shows previous options)
    • Where is the safe route?
      • Player: Where is the safe route?
      • Surok Magis: I could tell you, of course; I know more or less exactly where it is. However, that would take all the fun out of this, wouldn't it?
      • Player: No, really! It's okay! You can tell me where it is!
      • Surok Magis: No, I think you should see if you can find it for yourself. I have given you the diary and, along with the tome around here, you should be able to find that alternate route easily enough on your own!
    • Can I have another one?
      • Player: Can I have another one?
      • Surok Magis: You want another copy of the diary?
      • Player: Yes, I seem to have misplaced the last one.
      • If the diary is still in the player's inventory:
        • Surok Magis: Hang on! I can see the last copy I gave you in your inventory there! You don't need another one!
        • (End of dialogue)
      • If the player does not have the diary in their inventory:
        • Surok Magis: Fine, but this diary is important you know! It has secrets that you should not share around with just anybody!
        • (Player receives Sin'keth's diary either in their inventory or on the ground if the player has no inventory space.)
        • (End of dialogue)
    • Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • Player: Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • Surok Magis: Fair enough. Go then. I expect you have a lot of work to do!
      • (End of dialogue)
  • Where is that tome you mentioned again?
    • Player: Where is that tome you mentioned, again?
    • Surok Magis: Like I said, it's lying around here in the library somewhere. It should be easy enough to find.
    • (End of dialogue)

Using the wand or diary on Surok Magis

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player uses the wand on Surok:
    • Surok Magis: Yes, I just gave that to you. Don't break it already!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the diary on Surok:
    • Surok Magis: No thanks, I don't need that.
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Rat Burgiss after handing the letter to Surok Magis

[edit | edit source]
  • Rat Burgiss: Ah, [player name]! Good to see you! I heard you got my letter to Surok. Well done!
  • Player: That's right! I did your leg work. Now, how about a reward?
  • Rat Burgiss: Yes, of course! I'd be happy to give you a reward, but I have a lot on my mind with...you know...trader...stuff!
  • Player: Indeed!
  • (End of dialogue)

Statue of Saradomin

[edit | edit source]

Attempting to dig the statue of Saradomin before talking to Anna Jones

[edit | edit source]
  • Anna Jones: You're going to need a bronze pickaxe to get through there!
  • Player: A bronze one? Why bronze? They're pretty cheap and tacky.
  • Anna Jones: Well, I don't claim to have a lot of knowledge about the ways of magic, but there's a strange protection spell on there.
  • Player: A protection spell?
  • Anna Jones: Yes. Apparently the makers of this tunnel protected it against all forms of pickaxes except bronze.
  • Player: Oh. Why bronze?
  • Anna Jones: I don't think they thought anyone would actually try and use a bronze pickaxe as it's such a poor instrument!
  • Player: I see. Well, thanks for the help.
  • Anna Jones: Any time! Good luck!
  • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Anna Jones before digging the statue of Saradomin

[edit | edit source]
  • Anna Jones: Ah. You must be [player name], right? I have a bronze pickaxe here for you!
  • If the player does not have a bronze pickaxe:
    • (Player receives a bronze pickaxe.)
    • Player: Thanks very much!
    • Anna Jones: My employer, Surok Magis, sent word to me that you may come to use the tunnel. You will need something to help you get in there. The pickaxe I've given to you should help.
    • Player: Uh, thanks.
    • Anna Jones: Okay, then. The tunnel awaits...
    • (Continues below)
  • If the player has a bronze pickaxe in their inventory:
    • Player: Thanks, but I already have one.
    • Anna Jones: Oh. Alright then! My employer, Surok Magis, sent word to me that you may come to use the tunnel. You'll need your bronze pickaxe to get in there.
    • Player: Uh, thanks.
    • Anna Jones: Okay, then. The tunnel awaits...
    • (Continues below)
  • Select an option
    • What tunnel?
      • Player: What tunnel?
      • Anna Jones: Why, the Chaos Tunnel of course! I imagine Surok will have told you of it.
      • Player: Oh, I see. Well, what can you tell me about it?
      • Anna Jones: Well, story and rumour has it that the Dagon'hai built a tunnel here under the statue of Saradomin that would allow them to visit the Chaos Altar without having to go through the Wilderness.
      • Player: That's extremely handy!
      • Anna Jones: Yes, it is. Or, at least, it would be. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get in there so far.
      • Player: Why not?
      • Anna Jones: The tunnel entrance needs to be cleared before anyone can get in there. However, my Mining skill isn't high enough at all to do it myself. Perhaps you could have a go?
      • (Shows previous options)
    • Sorry, who are you?
      • Player: Sorry, who are you?
      • Anna Jones: My name is Louisiana Jones, although most people call me Anna. I'm an archaeologist.
      • Player: Pleased to meet you.
      • Anna Jones: Likewise!
      • Select an option
        • What tunnel were you talking about?
          • (Same as above)
        • Who does this statue represent?
          • Player: Who does this statue represent?
          • Anna Jones: That, my dear, is the statue of the great god Saradomin himself. Stand and admire in awe for you are in the presence of greatness!
          • Player: Consider me awed!
          • Anna Jones: Indeed!
          • (Shows previous options)
        • Why are you here?
          • Player: What are you doing here?
          • Anna Jones: Well story and rumour has it that the Dagon'hai built a tunnel under this statue of Saradomin that would allow them to visit the Chaos Altar without having to go through the Wilderness.
          • Player: That's extremely handy!
          • Anna Jones: Yes, it is. Or, at least, it would be. I came to excavate the tunnel but, unfortunately, there so far.
          • Player: Why not?
          • Anna Jones: The tunnel entrance needs to be cleared before anyone can get in there. However, my Mining skill just isn't what it used to be. Perhaps you could have a go?
          • Player: Maybe. I might do.
          • (End of dialogue)
        • Okay, I'd better go.
          • Player: Okay, I'd better go.
          • Anna Jones: Okay, then!
          • (End of dialogue)
    • Who does this statue represent?
      • Player: Who does this statue represent?
      • (Same as above)
    • What are you doing here?
      • Player: What are you doing here?
      • (Same as above)
    • Okay, I'd better go.
      • (Same as above)

Excavating the statue after talking to Anna Jones

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player does not have level 42 Mining:
    • The player starts mining the statue of Saradomin for five seconds.
    • Player: Hmm...
    • The player keeps mining for another five seconds.
    • Anna Jones: Be careful! You're going to bring the statue down on both of our heads if you go swinging wildly away like that.
    • Player: So what should I do?
    • Anna Jones: I would suggest you improve your Mining skills a bit before you attempt this.
    • Player: Okay, I'd better go and train some more then!
    • The statue begins to shake. You're going to need a Mining level of at least 42 to excavate under here!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player has at least level 42 Mining:
    • The player starts mining the statue of Saradomin for five seconds.
    • Player: Hmm...
    • The player keeps mining for another five seconds, and a tunnel is excavated.
    • TThe tunnel shudders as you carefully dig away enough of the crumbling rock to make an entrance big enough to climb through.
    • Anna Jones: You did it! Oh, well done! How exciting!
    • Player: Right, well, I better see what's down there, then.
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player talks to Anna Jones before entering the tunnel:
    • Anna Jones: You opened the tunnel; well done!
    • Player: Aren't you going to go inside?
    • Anna Jones: I'd better not. My orders were to open up the entrance and wait for Surok to arrive. When he gets here, we'll go in together. He promised me a lot of gold for this job!
    • Player: Okay, then. I'm going in to have a look!
    • (End of dialogue)

Imbuing the wand at the Chaos Altar

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player attempts to use the wand on the altar without 15 chaos runes:
    • The wand sparks and glows, but the infusion does not appear to take hold. It looks like you will need more chaos runes to complete the infusion.
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the wand on the altar with 15 chaos runes in their inventory:
    • The metal wand bursts into life and crackles with arcane power. This is a powerful instrument indeed!
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Rat Burgiss with the infused wand/diary

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player uses the infused wand on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat Burgiss: What on earth is that?
    • Player: I can't tell you. It's a secret!
    • Rat Burgiss: I see! It looks pretty magical; I'd be careful with that if I were you!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the diary on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat doesn't need that. You should keep it.
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Surok after imbuing the wand

[edit | edit source]

Missing items

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player loses the imbued wand or uses an empty bowl with the imbued wand in their bank:
    • Player: I made the wand that you asked me for, but I seem to have lost it!
    • Surok Magis: You lost it? Those wands are extremely powerful and dangerous in the wrong hands! You better hope someone doesn't find it!
    • Surok Magis: Hmph! In the meantime, here's another metal wand. Go and make another infused wand for me...and be more careful this time! My patience is growing thin!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player infuses the wand but has a regular wand in their inventory:
    • Surok Magis: Well?
    • Surok Magis: You say you made the infused wand for me? Then why do you still have that metal wand I gave you? Go and do what I ask before I lose my temper and turn you into a worm or something!
    • (End of dialogue)

Delivering the items

[edit | edit source]
    • Surok Magis: Well?
    • Select an option
    • I have the things you wanted!
      • Player: I have the things you wanted!
      • If the player does not have a bowl in their inventory:
        • Surok Magis: No, it looks like you still need to find me a bowl first. An ordinary bowl. You can get one from one of the stores around here.
        • (End of dialogue)
      • If the player has a bowl in their inventory:
        • Player: I have the things you wanted!
        • Surok Magis: Excellent! Well done! I knew that you would not let me down.
        • Player: So...about this gold that you're going to give me?
        • Surok Magis: All in good time. I must prepare the spell first, and that will take a little time. While I am doing that, please take this letter to Rat, the trader outside the city who sent you here.
        • (Player receives Surok's letter.)
        • Player: Okay, but I'll be back for my gold.
        • Surok Magis: Yes, yes, yes. Now off you go!
        • (End of dialogue)
    • Can I ask about the diary?
      • Player: Can I ask about the diary?
      • Surok Magis: Of course. What would you like to know?
      • Select an option
      • Who is this Sin'keth?
        • (Same as above)
      • Where did it come from?
        • (Same as above)
      • Where is the safe route?
        • (Same as above)
      • Can I have another one?
        • (Same as above)
      • Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • Player: Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • Surok Magis: Fair enough. Go then. I expect you have a lot of work to do!
      • (End of dialogue)
    • Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • (Same as above)

Talking to Surok Magis again

[edit | edit source]
  • If the player destroys the letter without reading it:
    • Player: I seem to have lost that letter you gave me!
    • If the player has inventory space:
      • Surok Magis: Goodness me! You do lose a lot of things! It's a wonder you can make it out of bed in the mornings! Well, here's another one!
      • (Player receives another letter to Surok.)
      • Player: Thanks!
      • (End of dialogue)
    • If the player has no inventory space:
      • Surok Magis: It's not surprising with all that junk in your inventory! Get some room, first, then speak to me again!
      • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player destroys the letter after reading it:
    • Player: That letter was treasonous so I destroyed it!
    • Surok Magis: Really? You destroyed it?
    • Player: Yes!
    • Surok Magis: You want another one, don't you?
    • Player: Ah...uh...yes...yes, I do.
    • Surok Magis: Fine. Here you are. And stop all this complaining; it's getting me down!
    • Select an option
    • Who are you really?
      • Player: Who are you really?
      • Surok Magis: That is not your concern! I am Surok Magis and I am more powerful than you can possibly imagine!
      • Player: So what's in it for me?
      • Surok Magis: You get to live. For now.
      • Player: Not that I'm complaining about the living part, but I was expecting something of more...er...value?
      • Surok Magis: Ah, yes. The gold. Don't you worry, I am still working on that. Just deliver my letter for me, first. Now be off!
      • Player: Fine. I will deliver the letter, but I will be back soon.
      • Surok Magis: I am sure you will.
      • (End of dialogue)
    • Do I still get the gold?
      • Player: Do I still get the gold?
      • Surok Magis: If that is your only concern, then yes, you do. But I must warn you, my patience with you is wearing thin. So go now and do my bidding!
      • Player: Fine. I will deliver the letter, but I will be back soon.
      • Surok Magis: I am sure you will.
      • (End of dialogue)
    • Never mind, I forgot the question.
      • (Same as above)

Talking to King Roald with Surok's letter in their inventory

[edit | edit source]
  • Player: Greetings, your majesty.
  • King Roald: Yes, citizen. Do you need something?
  • Select an option
  • (Non-quest dialogue) I'm looking for a quest!
  • Your majesty, I think that you should see this letter.
    • Player: Your majesty, I think that you should see this letter.
    • King Roald: Letter? Let me see. Where's Postie Pete? He usually deals with the mail around here.
    • Player: This letter was delivered to me by hand, your majesty. I think you may be in some danger.
    • King Roald: Hmmm. I see. I appreciate your concern. However, I assure you, I am quite safe here. My guards are on full alert at all times.
    • Player: I don't think you understand...
    • King Roald: I understand perfectly. Now, for all I know, that letter could be a fake ruse. We get a lot of that sort of thing and it causes a lot of hassle.
    • Player: I'm trying to save your life!
    • King Roald: And you are shouting at your king! People who yell at their monarchs often find their heads become...loose!
    • Player: I'm just saying that the letter is real.
    • King Roald: Then why do you have it?
    • Player: Because I'm supposed to deliv...oh.
    • King Roald: It seems to me that if that letter were genuine, I would be forced to arrest its bearer for treason. You understand.
    • King Roald: So what do you say?
    • Player: I...er...I reckon it's a fake! ...I guess...
    • King Roald: Just as I thought! Now off you go!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • (Non-quest dialogue) Not really.

Giving the letter to Rat Burgiss

[edit | edit source]
  • Rat Burgiss: Ah, [player name]! You've returned!
  • Select an option
  • Yes! I have a letter for you.
    • Player: Yes! I have a letter for you.
    • The player gives the letter to Rat, and he takes a few seconds to read it.
    • Rat Burgiss: This letter is treasonous! This does indeed confirm my worst fears. It is time I let you into my secret and hopefully this will answer any questions you may have.
    • Player: Okay. Go on.
    • Rat Burgiss: I am not really a trader. I am the Commander of the Varrock Palace Secret Guard. VPSG for short.
    • Player: Okay, I had a feeling you weren't a real trader due to the fact that you had nothing to sell! So why the secrecy?
    • Rat Burgiss: I'm just getting to that. A short while ago, we received word that Surok had discovered a powerful mind-control spell and intended to use it on King Roald himself!
    • Rat Burgiss: He could control the whole kingdom that way!
    • Player: I think I can believe that. Surok's not the nicest person in Misthalin!
    • Rat Burgiss: Yes, but until now, the spell has been useless to him as he is currently under guard at the palace and not allowed to leave. He could not get the tools for the spell because if he left the palace he would be arrested!
    • Player: Uh oh! I think I may have helped him by mistake, here. He promised me a big reward if I collected some items for him...but he said it was for a spell to make gold!
    • Rat Burgiss: Yes, we heard that somehow Surok had obtained the things he needed but we were not sure how. I thought it might have been you.
    • Rat Burgiss: However, I assumed you did not know of his plans; that is why you weren't arrested!
    • Player: Thank you! How can I help fix this mistake?
    • Rat Burgiss: Okay, here's what I need you to do. One of my contacts has devised a spell that he is sure will be able to counteract the effects of the mind-control spell. I need you to visit him.
    • Player: Okay, who is it?
    • Rat Burgiss: His name is Zaff. He runs a staff shop in Varrock. Go and speak to him and he will tell you what you should do. I will send word to him to let him know that you are coming.
    • Player: Yes, sir! I'm on my way!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • Yes, and you have some explaining to do!
    • Player: Yes, and you have some explaining to do!
    • Rat Burgiss: Why? Whatever do you mean?
    • Player: This letter from Surok to you implies that you're involved in a treasonous plot! I should tell the guards about you!
    • Rat Burgiss: I'm sure I don't know what you mean. Let me see the letter, please.
    • Rat Burgiss: This letter is treasonous! This does indeed confirm my worst fears. It is time I let you into my secret and hopefully this will answer any questions you may have.

  • What, you're still here?
    • Player: What, you're still here?
    • Rat Burgiss: Yes. I still haven't found someone to help me yet, but I hear you've been very busy yourself!
    • Player: You have? Who told you that?
    • Rat Burgiss: Oh, I have my sources. Was there anything else?

      • Do you have anything to trade yet?
        • Player: Do you have anything to trade yet?
        • Rat Burgiss: No, I'm afraid I have nothing in stock, largely due to the fact that I'm not really a trader, as I just mentioned.
        • Player: Ah yes, I remember!

Confronting Surok Magis

[edit | edit source]
  • Player: I've been told of your foul plans, Surok! You lied to me about the gold, so I've come to stop you!
  • Surok Magis: Oh really? And what makes you think you have even the slightest chance of doing that?
  • Player: I'll fight you if I have to!
  • Surok Magis: Enough! You have been of use to me before but now you are wasting my time! Be gone!
  • Surok teleports you out of his presence.
  • Surok teleports the player to the Varrock entrance near the wizard camp.
  • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Zaff

[edit | edit source]
  • Zaff: Would you like to buy or sell some staffs? Or is there something else you need?
  • Select an option
  • (Non-quest dialogue) Yes, please!
  • (Non-quest dialogue) Have you any extra stock of battlestaffs I can buy?
  • (Non-quest dialogue) No, thank you.
  • Rat Burgiss sent me!
    • Player: Rat Burgiss sent me!
    • Zaff: Ah, yes; You must be [player name]! Rat sent word that you would be coming. Everything is prepared. I have created a spell that will remove the mind control from the king.
    • Player: Okay, so what's the plan?
    • Zaff: Listen carefully. For the spell to succeed, the king must be made very weak. If his mind is controlled, you will need to fight him until he is all but dead.
    • Zaff: Then and ONLY then, use your ring to summon me. I will teleport to you and cast the spell that will cure the king.
    • Player: Why must I summon you? Can't you come with me?
    • Zaff: I cannot. I must look after my shop here and I have lots to do. Rest assured, I will come when you summon me.
    • Player: Okay, so what do I do now?
    • If the player does not have two free inventory spaces:
      • Zaff: First, free up 2 inventory spaces so I can give you a couple of things.
      • (End of dialogue)
    • If the player has at least two inventory spaces free:
      • Zaff: Take this beacon ring and some instructions.
      • (Player receives a beacon ring and Zaff's instructions.)
      • Zaff: Once you have read the instructions, it will be time for you to arrest Surok.
      • Player: Won't he be disinclined to acquiesce to that request?
      • Zaff: Won't he what?
      • Player: Won't he refuse?
      • Zaff: I very much expect so. It may turn nasty, so be on your guard. I hope we can stop him before he can cast his spell! Make sure you have that ring I gave you.
      • Player: Okay, thanks, Zaff!
      • Zaff: Rat has told me that you are to be made an honorary member of the VPSG so that you can arrest Surok. If you have any questions about this, ask Rat.
      • Zaff: One last thing: you must remember that as part of the VPSG, we must remain secretive at all times. For this reason, I cannot discuss matters such as this unless absolutely necessary!
      • Player: Of course! Thanks again!
      • (End of dialogue)

      • If the player destroyed their ring:
        • If the player has no inventory space:

Operating the ring

  • If the player operates the ring whilst 9 tiles or less of Zaff's shop:
    • Zaff: What are you doing, [player name]? I'm right here! Why are you trying to summon me again?
    • Player: Sorry, I was just testing the ring.
    • Zaff: Well, stop playing around; I'm a busy man!
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player operates the ring whilst 10 tiles or more away from Zaff's shop:
    • Zaff: Okay, Surok, your time is ov...hey! What gives? You don't need me yet! Why did you use the ring?
    • Player: Sorry, I was just testing the ring.
    • Zaff: Look, stop messing around! My shop doesn't look after itself, you know! Hmm. Perhaps I could invent a spell that would do that...
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player is 100 blocks away from Varrock or is underground:
    • Nothing appears to happen. You may be too far away from Varrock for the ring to work.
    • (End of dialogue)

    • Surok Magis: Is that supposed to amuse me?
    • (End of dialogue)

    • Rat doesn't need that. You should keep it.
    • (End of dialogue)
  • If the player uses the ring on Rat Burgiss:
    • Rat Burgiss: Ooh! Shiny! I would take it, but I'd probably have to sell it. I have a wife and 17 children to feed!
    • Rat Burgiss: Besides, you probably need it more than me right now!
    • (Continues below)
  • If the player talks to Rat Burgiss without using the instructions or ring:
    • Player: I have been to see Zaff and he has told me to go and arrest Surok.
    • Rat Burgiss: Excellent! In that case, we are all set and ready to foil Surok's plans!
    • Player: So what happens now?
    • Rat Burgiss: Now it is all down to you, [player name]. As you have proven yourself in the tasks I have set you, I am making you an honorary member of the VPSG!
    • Player: Oooh! Do we have adventurer's insurance?
    • Rat Burgiss: Well...no. But we do have a nice lady called Emma who makes the tea on Mondays.
    • Player: Oh, well that sounds just as good!
    • Rat Burgiss: Right then. You have an important task set out for you. Good luck, [player name]!

      • Player: What are my orders again?
      • Rat Burgiss: You will need to go and speak to Surok now. Arrest him under the authority of the Varrock Palace Secret Guard.
      • Player: Right then.
      • Rat Burgiss: It may be tough and Surok will most likely not be arrested without a fight, so be on your guard!

        • Rat Burgiss: How do you know of them?
        • Player: Surok gave me a diary that spoke of them. Do you know anything about them?
        • Rat Burgiss: I see. The Dagon'hai were a powerful order of Zamorakian mages who resided here in this very city.
        • Rat Burgiss: However, the priests of Saradomin warred ferociously with them and tried to destroy them. The Dagon'hai, though, were very clever and extremely cunning.
        • Player: What do you mean?
        • Rat Burgiss: They hid themselves away within the city and, rumour has it, they even had a way of getting to the Wilderness and back without ever being seen, although I have no idea how that might have been.
        • Player: So where are they now?
        • Rat Burgiss: Nobody knows. They disappeared from the city a hundred years ago and very few people even remember who they were.
        • Player: So how do you know about them?
        • Rat Burgiss: My grandfather's brother, my great uncle, was a priest of Saradomin and he would tell me stories of the wars with the Dagon'hai as a child.
        • Player: Oh, I see.

            • Rat Burgiss: I'm afraid not. No.

    • Surok Magis: No! My plans have been ruined! I was so close to success!

  • Why did you teleport us?
    • Player: Why did you teleport us? We were winning!
    • Zaff: The king was not weak enough and Surok's power over him was still too strong! You must weaken the king further before summoning me. Otherwise, we will fail.

  • (Non-quest dialogue) Yes, please!
  • (Non-quest dialogue) Have you any extra stock of battlestaffs I can buy?

    • Player: It was all in the call of duty!
    • Player: What will happen with Surok now?
    • Zaff: Well, when I disrupted Surok's spell, he will have been sealed in the library, but we will still need to keep an eye on him, just in case.
    • Zaff: When you are ready, report back to Rat and he will reward you.
    • Player: Okay, I will.
    • Zaff: Sadly, however, after this I will not be able to discuss these matters with you again. They are secret and we must be vigilant. The VPSG will prevail!
    • Player: Of course. I understand. Goodbye!

Talking to Rat Burgiss

[edit | edit source]
  • Rat Burgiss: Well, [player name], how did it go?
  • Player: You should have been there! There was this...and Surok was like...and I was...and then the King...and, and...uh...ahem! The mission was accomplished and the king has been saved.
  • Rat Burgiss: I take it that it went alright, then? That's great news!
  • Rat Burgiss: Zaff has already briefed me on the events. We will arrange for Surok to be fed and watched. I think he will not be a problem any more.
  • Player: You know, one thing bothers me. He's now stuck in the library, but wasn't that the reason we were in this mess in the first place?
  • Rat Burgiss: Yes, you are right. But rest assured, we will be watching him much more closely from now on.
  • Rat Burgiss: You've done very well and have been a credit to the VPSG; perhaps one day there may be a place for you here!
  • Rat Burgiss: In the meantime, let me reward you for what you've done, give you a little training. I will be sure to call on you if we ever need help in the future.
  • Continuing and completing the quest will grant you defence experience. You have already unlocked the ability to buy battlestaves. Are you sure you wish to continue?
  • Complete the quest and gain experience?
  • Yes, give me the experience.
    • Congratulations, you've completed a quest:What Lies Below
    • (End of dialogue)

Talking to Rat Burgiss

[edit | edit source]
  • Player: Hi, Rat!
  • Rat Burgiss: Ah! [player name]! You did a fine service for us. You might make a good member of the VPSG one day, with a little training and a bit more muscle!
  • Player: So, do you have any more jobs for me to do?
  • Rat Burgiss: At the moment, no. Things seem pretty quiet. However, I have heard a rumour about something strange going on in...hmm, no, I think we can handle this one for now.
  • Rat Burgiss: But, who knows? We may need your assistance again soon. Thank you, [player name].
  • Player: Any time, Rat!
  • (End of dialogue)
