Infernal shale is an ore that can be mined in the Chasm of Fire with level 78 Mining, granting between 13.2 and 100 experience. It can be crushed into crushed infernal shale with a hammer and a chisel, which is necessary for the creation of oathplate armour.

The shale can be acquired by three different mining methods:

• Mine the active infernal shale deposit. This is the slowest and least click-intensive method.
• Mine the infernal shale rocks normally.
• Use Jim's wet cloth to 3-tick mine the infernal shale rocks.

Each infernal shale can be crushed into 1–3 crushed infernal shale. When crushing them, it is recommended to do so with 9 or fewer shale in the inventory – in this case, the expected yield from each shale is 1.7 crushed shale, but with 10 or more in the inventory, the expected yield is only 1.4 crushed shale.

Crushing the shale provides no experience, and it will not automatically process, so each infernal shale must be individually clicked. Repeatedly using a chisel on the very last shale in the inventory is the easiest way to process infernal shale.

The Imcando hammer is an acceptable kind of hammer while equipped or in the inventory.

Crush yield

Drop rates are estimated based on 441 samples from the Drop Rate Project, unless otherwise cited.

The amount of crushed shale received varies depending on how many shale are in the inventory at crush time. With nine or fewer, each action always consumes exactly one infernal shale, and the expected yield is 1.7 crushed shale.
