The Order of the Sacred Flame is a group of Arceuus mages who have dedicated their lives to the art of pyromancy. They are currently tasked with fighting the Wintertodt to prevent it from cloaking Great Kourend in a perpetual winter.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]The Order was formed at an unknown date, presumably around the time the Wintertodt (then known as the Winter Beast) first appeared during the 2nd decade (1,400 years ago) in the Northern Tundras. It is comprised entirely of Pyromancers, who worship fire to such an extent that they are not trusted much by other Arceuus mages; Ish the Navigator claims that the Order have committed so many unspeakable acts to the point that not even Lord Trobin Arceuus fully trusts them.[2] They are only trusted due to the fact that they are the only people who know the spells required to subdue the Wintertodt.[3]
Trapping the Winter Beast
[edit | edit source]On 1,748 - 7 (1,340 years ago), a master Lovakengj smith named Dinh created a plan to subdue the Winter Beast. Dinh believed that the roots of the Bruma tree, a magical tree lying within the heart of the Northern Tundras, could emit the heat required to subdue the Beast. He proposed constructing a large prison to lure the Beast in, then seal it with a set of large doors built with some of the strongest materials in Kourend (such as lovakite), reinforced with Bruma tree bark, and had enchantments placed on it by the Order.[4]
After the Wintertodt's imprisonment, the Order would guard it for the next thousand years.[5]
Current leadership
[edit | edit source]The Order is currently led by Grand Master Ignisia, who passed the Order's initiation tests, known as the Trials of Fire, prior to the Ascent of Arceuus (910 years ago).[6] The previous Grand Master, Ignisia's mentor, went missing after meeting with Xeric. Ignisia was then elected to the position of Grand Master by a unanimous vote.[7]
Sabotage
[edit | edit source]Over a thousand years after the Wintertodt's imprisonment, the Doors of Dinh had begun to fail due to being damaged by someone or something, creating a small hole in the doors. Due to this, the Wintertodt had been drawing a small amount of power into the prison.[8] Despite having been fixed by Undor during the quest The Forsaken Tower, the Doors were already damaged for such a time that the Wintertodt had already gained a lot of power,[9] with Undor believing that it would take many years before the Wintertodt returned to a "normal" state.[10]
It is later revealed in A Kingdom Divided that the doors were sabotaged by one of the Pyromancers, with collusion from Xamphur, Xeric's closest ally.[11] It is not known what interested Xamphur, but during the quest, the Tasakaal create a shielding potion for the adventurer to apply to the doors to prevent further damage. The whereabouts of the saboteur are currently unknown.
