Graves are objects that appear upon a player's death containing items that were neither kept on death, sent to Death's Office, nor deleted. This mechanic is enabled after the first time visiting Death in Death's Office, which typically happens the first time a player dies. Graves appear either at the spot the player died or outside the instance; a grave will not appear if the content has an Item Retrieval Service (e.g Zulrah).

Graves are indicated on the minimap with a gravestone icon, and can be found on any world, regardless of where the death initially occurred. They can be accessed from a distance of up to 7 tiles away, provided the player has line-of-sight.

Players have 15 minutes after respawning to return to their grave and collect any items inside. The 15-minute timer does not count down when a player is logged out, idle for more than 10 seconds, or has the grave interface open. Few things cause the grave interface to close on its own, so graves can persist much longer than 15 minutes – it will stay open during combat, eating, skilling actions, dialogue, and more. The timer will, however, count down if other interfaces such as the bank window are open. Players can speak to Death to collect items from him rather than from the grave, though this service can be more expensive.

The angel aesthetic for the gravestone can be bought at Death's Office for 200,000. This change is purely cosmetic and gives no additional benefits. If you change your gravestone back to the basic gravestone you will have to pay the 200,000 fee again if you want to change your gravestone to the angel aesthetic once again.

Item recovery fees

[edit | edit source]

From a grave

[edit | edit source]

Most items worth less than 100,000 can be reclaimed for free from a grave, but items worth more have a fee depending on the item's value:

  • No fee for items worth less than 100k
  • 1,000 for each reclaimed item between 100k and 1m
  • 10,000 for each reclaimed item between 1m and 10m
  • 100,000 for each reclaimed item equal to or above 10m
  • The total combined fees are capped at 500,000
  • Ironmen get a 50% discount when reclaiming items from their grave.

The fee is deducted from Death's Coffer, if available, or else from the bank.

Players have 15 minutes after respawning to return to their grave and collect any items inside. The 15-minute timer does not count down when a player is logged out, idle for more than 10 seconds, or has the grave interface open.

From Death's Office

[edit | edit source]

After the 15 minute grave timer has expired, items are sent to Death's Office where the reclamation fee is 5% for items worth 100,000 or more. These items will be stored indefinitely. Ironmen get a 50% discount when reclaiming items either from their grave or Death's Office; putting the reclamation fee at 2.5%. This stacks with other discounts. Players can opt to have Death collect these items immediately without waiting.

The fee is deducted from Death's Coffer, if available, or else from the bank.

From an item retrieval service

[edit | edit source]

Varies widely, see the Item Retrieval Service page.

Discounted deaths

[edit | edit source]

Some content has a discount that reduces death fees (usually by 75%), which is lifted once the player has reached a certain success threshold:

  • Desert Treasure II bosses: 75% until 5 successful kills, then standard fee applies
  • Doom of Mokhaiotl - 75% until 20 total attempts across all floors, then standard fee applies
  • Fortis Colosseum - 75% until 100 waves are successfully cleared, then standard fee applies
  • Yama - 75% until 10 successful kills, then standard fee applies
  • Zulrah - Free until 50 successful kills, then 100,000 fee

Gravestone storage

[edit | edit source]

When storing items, a gravestone functions similarly to a bank with 120 slots. Dying with an already existing grave causes most newly dropped items to be deposited into that initial grave at its original location, with some exceptions detailed below. The 15-minute timer is refreshed as long as the contents of the grave change.

For example, if you die in the Varrock Sewers, respawn, and die again with more gear elsewhere, your newly lost items will be in the Varrock Sewers at your existing grave. However, Entrana and the Wilderness are exceptions to this. Dying with a grave on Entrana will move it to the spot the player died. Similarly, upon a PvM death in the Wilderness, any grave outside of the Wilderness will be moved to where the player died.

Item limitations

[edit | edit source]

There is no limit to how many stackable items can be sent to a grave on death, and the quantity inside the grave can increase arbitrarily with subsequent deaths. With unstackable items, there are limits.

Standard unstackable items

[edit | edit source]

For most unstackable items, for example logs, the theoretical maximum quantity present in a grave is 56. The actual maximum depends on the situation. Consider a player who dies three times:

  1. On the first death, they establish a grave with 25 logs inside.
  2. On the second death, they send 10 logs to the grave. The grave now contains 35 logs.
  3. On the third death, they send 2 more logs to the grave. The grave now contains 30 logs, NOT 37.

This is because when you die, the previous grave sends any excess over 28 to Death's Office. After that, it processes the incoming items. So on death #3, the grave sends 35-28=7 logs to Death, then adds the incoming 2 logs to the grave, making the final total 28+2=30 logs in the grave.

This order of operations is also apparent from the order that chat messages appear on death #3:

  1. Some items have been moved to Death's Office from your gravestone.
  2. Oh dear, you are dead!
  3. Some of your items have been added to your previous gravestone.

Resources

[edit | edit source]

Certain unstackable resources cannot be stockpiled up to 56, to prevent abuse. On death, any of the following item types present in a grave will be sent from the grave to Death's Office. Incoming resources go to the grave. This means only one inventory of these items can be stored in a grave at a time, and only if they dropped from the most recent death.

These include:

Supplies

[edit | edit source]

Similarly, if a grave contains cooked food or potions, when the player dies again, any of those supplies inside the grave will not stay there. But, instead of going to Death's Office like resources, they drop to the ground beneath the grave. The items in the stack that forms will despawn after one hour.

If a grave only contains resources and supplies, and dying sends nothing new to the grave, then the grave disappears – all its contents were sent to Death's Office or to the floor. Therefore it is recommended to keep at least one other item (a single feather, for instance) in the grave when using it as a stockpile, to guarantee it doesn't disappear on death.

If the "Food/Potions can form supply piles on death" setting is toggled on, food and potions will drop beneath the player's feet when they die, instead of going to the grave. However, while in the Wilderness or on a PvP world, food, potions, and phoenix necklaces cannot be sent to a grave or dropped, and are instead deleted.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The examine text for the angel gravestone includes "requiescat in pace", which is Latin for "rest in peace".
  • If a player has an existing gravestone, upon death (or upon unloading and reloading the current map area) it will rotate by a random multiple of 45°.
