The carpenter is a resident of Sophanem involved in the Icthlarin's Little Helper quest.

If the potion is used on the Carpenter (to relieve him of the itching), he will unfortunately get some of the potion in his eye. Futhermore, the potion has no effect and the Carpenter furiously sends the player away. He is seen in a cutscene in Contact! as part of the High Priest's delegation.

Trivia

A section of commented-out code can be found in the game's source files that would have allowed players to sell willow logs to the carpenter for 40 coins each prior to completion of the Contact! quest.^[1] Regardless, this feature has never been enabled in Old School RuneScape.^[2]
The carpenter appears in the banner at the top of the Old School RuneScape official website, though in that image he holds the hammer in his left hand rather than the right as he does in-game.
