Crabs can be assigned as a Slayer task by various Slayer masters. They have no requirements to be assigned and are found in many areas across Gielinor. Crabs are often used as popular monsters for combat training, due to their low offence and high hitpoints. King Sand Crabs and Giant Rock Crabs are the exceptions, having much higher combat stats, and are only advisable to kill for a Slayer task if seeking specific drops from them (such as pieces of rock-shell armour).

As most crabs deal relatively little damage, no particular gear is required for them. Accounts with lower combat levels may need to wear armour or bring food, but at higher levels, neither are necessary. All crabs use the crush attack style, so if wearing armour, armour with the highest crush defence is advised. For example, a chainbody will offer more crush defence than a platebody.

All types of crabs initially appear as unattackable "rocks", but will emerge when a player stands in a neighboring tile. They will be aggressive, automatically attacking the player, but will become tolerant after 10 minutes have passed, and will no longer emerge. As they must be active to fight, the player must reset the crabs' aggression timer by leaving their immediate area and then returning.

The Gemstone Crab and hermit crabs do not count for a Slayer task.
