Balloon transport system

The Balloon Transport System or Hot Air Balloon is a transportation method unlocked during
Enlightened Journey. During the quest, the balloon system is constructed for travel between Entrana and Taverley. Four more locations may be unlocked after the quest by travelling to them from Entrana. Each location requires a different type of log and has an associated
Firemaking requirement to unlock the location. After the initial trip, subsequent trips to that location will require less logs.
Using the Balloon Transport System
[edit | edit source]
Each location has an associated log storage with a shared inventory, which may be used to deposit up to 100 of each type of log used (may be noted). Logs may be automatically consumed from the storage to pay for the trip when using the system. Though you may also choose to instead travel with the logs in your inventory, you cannot use the storage to retrieve logs: they will be permanently stored. The storage may be used before the associated route is unlocked and before the
Firemaking requirement is met.
The player may not carry over 40 kilograms of weight when using the balloon. This weight limit does not include the log used to make the journey. Weight-reducing clothing effectively increases the weight limit.
Unlocking a new route requires the player to visit Entrana and complete the associated ballooning mechanics as in the Enlightened Journey quest. Each unlock will reward 2000
experience. If unlocking multiple routes at once, remember to have additional logs for each return trip to Entrana. Subsequent trips will not require you to replay the minigame.

Ballooning mechanics
[edit | edit source]
See the quest Ballooning section for a review of flying a balloon.
Should the player log out during, the logs will be lost and the player will need to start over with new logs.
- Each control always moves one "space" forward (horizontally to the right), and either up, down, or without change in altitude.
- Drop sandbag (AKA Move up more): moves up two spaces (UP 2).
- Burn log: moves up one space (UP 1).
- Relax: moves straight forward with no change in altitude (RIGHT).
- Pull normal rope: moves down one space (DOWN 1).
- Pull red rope: moves down two spaces (DOWN 2).
- Bail: bails out the player from the balloon flight. (Note: The balloon crashes near Falador, Ardougne, or Entrana.)
- The balloon should end up one space above the landing pad, with no air space in between. Flying past the landing pad would get the balloon blown away, and getting the balloon in the space with landing pad would cause it to smash to the ground—in both cases, the flight would be considered unsuccessful.
Route Walkthrough
[edit | edit source]The following sections show one of several possible methods to complete a ballooning route and unlock each destination. For the Entrana and Taverley locations, you may view the route on the Enlightened Journey page.
- Note: It is advised to click slowly and only follow the next step once the interface has finished visually updating, to avoid accidentally skipping steps.

[edit | edit source]Uses of the balloon transport system
[edit | edit source]There is a maximum weight limit (40 kg) that acts as a slight disadvantage of the balloon transport system. The main uses of the balloon transport system are in combination with the use of a Ring of dueling teleport to Castle Wars for banking. Typical trips start at Castle Wars bank, which has an entry to the balloon transport system close by. A trip can also start at Grand Tree if a player teleports there by using a spirit tree (the balloon is just north-east).
UIMs often make use of hot air balloons for quick access to the Lumberyard Sawmill for Construction training. The Auburnvale sawmill can be a more convenient alternative for UIMs with a Quetzal whistle.
Examples of round trips to balloon transport system destinations, and possible activities are presented in the table below:
| Destination | Log type[n 1] | Cost | Activity | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entrana | Logs | 19 | Law Runecrafting at Law Altar, hops patch, buying vials, sand pit. (Note: No weapons or armour allowed, including axes.) | |
| Taverley | Logs | 19 | Access to a tree patch, the crystal key chest, the Taverley Dungeon, and a POH portal. Buying vials. | |
| Crafting Guild | Oak logs | 28 | Mining ores at Crafting Guild & Rimmington Mine (Tip: Using the Magic spell Superheat item GREATLY decreases the weight for return trips), berry patch at Rimmington, also POH portal. Close to Port Sarim. Good entry point using the Skills necklace or the Crafting cape's teleport. | |
| Varrock | Willow logs | 19 | Earth Runecrafting at Earth Altar, access alternate entrance for chaos Runecrafting at Chaos Altar, Sawmill, Woodcutting (yew logs). Second closest entry point using a Ring of the elements. | |
| Castle Wars | Yew logs | 103 | Closest to a bank, often used as a lower requirement entry point into the balloon network in conjunction with a Ring of dueling. | |
| Grand Tree | Magic logs | 901 | Tree patch, fruit tree patch, Spirit Tree teleport, gnome gliders, Gnome Stronghold Agility Course, Monkey Madness II quest. Best entry point if you have access to the Achievement diary cape. Unlocking this route is a requirement for | |
- ^ All trips require one log of the appropriate type.
