Old School RuneScape Mobile is an Old School RuneScape client for the Android and iOS mobile platforms. It was announced on 17 July 2017 and was released on 30 October 2018. It allows players to play Old School RuneScape for free on their Android and iOS mobile devices.[1] It works cross-platform with the desktop client, allowing players to play using the same accounts.[2]
Features
[edit | edit source]The mobile client has suspend and resume support which will keep players logged in but idle (for as long as they would be in the desktop client) if the player switches to another app, e.g to take a phone call; however, this may vary between the type of phone the player uses. Additionally, players who log in to the mobile client once will be able to log in subsequently through the same device without the need to enter their username and password. This active session can be disabled by tapping Log Out in the Main Menu or through the player's Account Settings.
The orb of oculus cannot be used on mobile.
Interface
[edit | edit source]The interface displays some features that are exclusive to the mobile client.
| Function | Use | |
|---|---|---|
| Internet connection | This displays a mobile phone or Wi-fi icon to denote whether the game is played through a mobile data or Wi-fi connection. | |
| Battery | This displays the mobile device's battery level (in 4 blocks of 25%). Players may tap on the battery icon which will display the exact level for 3 ticks. If the phone is plugged into a charger, a charging ( | |
| Mobile indicator | Mobile players have the option of displaying a mobile phone next to their username in the Choose Option interface, indicating to others that they are currently playing on a mobile phone instead of a computer. This is disabled by default and can be enabled using the "Minimenu icon while on mobile" option in Settings. | |
Spellbook
[edit | edit source]
Players on the mobile client may check the level and runes required to cast a spell by tapping the Info button on the bottom of the spellbook interface, then tapping the desired spell.
If players use enough filters to significantly decrease the number of spells displayed, the spell icons will become enlarged to make them easier to tap.
Side Stones
[edit | edit source]
The new UI on the right-hand side of the screen now shows a collapsible panel with the left-hand column showing menus for high-intensity gameplay (e.g. inventory, gear loadout, prayer, spellbook, combat style, and quest menus) and the right-hand column showing menus for laid-back gameplay (e.g. skills, emotes, music, friends/clan chat, friends/ignore, account setting, and general setting menus).
Hotkeys
[edit | edit source]
Players can now enjoy a more flexible interface with the introduction of five custom Hotkeys, replacing the familiar 'Function' button. While the original button offered useful features, these new Hotkeys are designed to support an even wider range of actions and settings, similar to the F-keys on the desktop client but with greater customization. Located on the left side of the interface where the Side Stones once were, these Hotkeys offer room for future feature expansions.
Players can assign these Hotkeys to various settings and actions, including opening any side panel, such as the Inventory, on either side of the screen. To use Hotkeys on the left side, be sure to enable the “Hotkeys open side panels on the left” option in the Settings menu. This setting is disabled by default to prevent potential overlap with other interface elements.
Up to five Hotkeys can be customised through this menu. In addition to the traditional Side Stone functions, each Hotkey provides versatile control through either a tap or long press, depending on the feature.

Popout Panel
[edit | edit source]Mobile players may already be familiar with the new Popout Panel, which brings a variety of helpful features similar to the RuneLite Panel. This includes tools like XP Tracking, settings for Ground Item Indicators, and plenty of options for future updates.
To make it easier to access, the Popout Panel now sits in the bottom left-hand corner, avoiding interference with Inventory and other right-hand side panels. It also offers three display modes:
Hidden: Shows a small button that can be expanded when needed.
Full: Expands fully to show as much information and options as possible.
New Chat
[edit | edit source]
The chat interface now includes a handy toggle button, allowing players to collapse it and enjoy more screen space when playing solo. Chat Filters are no longer always visible; instead, players can long-press the ‘Speech Bubble’ button to choose a preferred active chat filter.
A more user-friendly keyboard button has swapped out the small speech bubble and the chat area is slightly narrower. Additionally, the Report button has been moved to a long-press option on the chat toggle, keeping it accessible without taking up extra space.
Menu Entry Swapper (MES)
[edit | edit source]
One of the most requested quality-of-life features, Menu Entry Swapper (MES), is now available on Mobile and the Official Client. MES allows players to customise default right-click or single-tap options, swapping them with other available actions. For example, players starting out in pickpocketing can replace the default 'Attack' option with 'Pickpocket' for easier, single-tap interactions.
In addition to adjusting NPC and entity options, players can also remove less frequently used menu choices like Examine, Use, and Cancel. The gap between options can even be expanded, making selections easier to navigate.
Settings
[edit | edit source]There are several settings exclusive to the mobile client, in addition to those that already exist on the desktop client.
Display
[edit | edit source]
This menu is for graphical settings. It contains a slider and several toggle buttons. It does not contain the Resizable screen and Advanced Options interface but is replaced by other options.
| Function | Use | |
|---|---|---|
| Camera zoom distance | This is a slider that can be adjusted to zoom within the game. Players can also tap the button to disable the use of two fingers to zoom. | |
| Limit Framerate | This is a slider that can adjust the frames-per-second (FPS) that the mobile client can display. It can be set to 15, 20, 30, and Max (60). Players cautious with battery consumption are recommended to set their FPS low. | |
| Allow tapping through the chatbox | This allows players to choose whether they can tap through their chatbox or not. | |
| Store orb | This allows players to choose whether the store orb is displayed on the minimap or not. For free-to-play players, it is enabled by default. | |
Controls
[edit | edit source]This menu is for adjusting how the game is controlled. Mouse options and keybinds are not displayed in the mobile client.
| Function | Use | |
|---|---|---|
| Single-tap mode | Single-tap mode acts as the desktop's right-click. If players disable Single-tap mode, they must touch & hold for "right-click" options to appear on an object. | |
| Tap to drop items | Tap to drop acts as the desktop's shift-click drop. If enabled, the inventory interface will be highlighted red, and tapping an item will drop it instantly. This also allows for bags such as the essence pouch and coal bag to be emptied into inventory. | |
| Show the function button | The function button enables a small button to appear directly above the Combat Options tab on the mobile client. | |
| Deadzone adjuster | Adjusts how far sidebar buttons are away from the edge of the device's screen. | |
Function mode
[edit | edit source]
If the function button is enabled, it will appear directly above the Combat Options tab. Once tapped, a chatbox will appear, prompting players to select a function mode:
Ratings
[edit | edit source]Old School RuneScape is rated 16 by the Pan European Game Information committee,[3] and MA15+ by the Australian Classification Board.[4] While Old School RuneScape is not rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, the equivalent rating would be Teen.
Development history
[edit | edit source]Pre-launch
[edit | edit source]At RuneFest 2017, players had the chance to play Old School RuneScape Mobile on the live servers.
Players were able to sign up to express their interest in joining closed tests. Selection for participation was based on account standing and device type.
The original planned release for Old School RuneScape Mobile was in winter 2017 but was delayed. A technical beta involving 2,000 players ran from 2 February 2018 to 8 February 2018. A second beta involving 5,431 players ran from 13 April 2018 to 19 April 2018.
An open beta test for Android was released on 5 July 2018, via an app available on the Google Play store. Although free to download, only players with a members subscription were be able to sign in and play. An open beta for iOS was released later in Summer 2018.[5]
New client
[edit | edit source]On 24 November 2021 a closed Android beta ran until 8 December 2021. This beta was for initial feedback on testing features introduced in the Steam Client that would be rolled out on the mobile version; this closed beta was in preparation for an open beta that launched in 28 February 2022,[6] with a closed beta rolling out for iOS in April 2022 afterwards.[7] The features were eventually released on 22 June 2022 for all Android and iOS mobile clients.[8] The device requirements were also changed along with the new client; the previous ones were:
- iOS 10.0 or later
- Android 5.0 or later
UI rework
[edit | edit source]This section is a stub. Please help expand it.
A beta for a User Interface (UI) rework was launched on 21 September 2023.
Troubleshooting
[edit | edit source]Unable to launch app
- Review that your mobile device meets the current Game Requirements.
- Re-install the app.
- If you're using a mobile emulator, make sure you're using the latest version of the mobile emulator and Old School RuneScape Mobile app.
Error! Your login or password was incorrect. Please try again.
- A bug confirmed in late 2020 which affected some devices generated an empty space when typing the first character of an account's email/username. This bug should already be patched on most, if not all, devices; but a simple work-around is to delete any spaces before your email/username after typing it to save your login credentials.
Unable to connect
- Toggling airplane mode on and off is a quick way to reconnect your mobile device to the nearest cell tower. This will also toggle on and off your mobile device's Wi-Fi. But if that doesn't seem to help, try restarting your mobile device.
- If you're still unable to connect to the game with or without Wi-Fi enabled, try connecting to a world server from Google Chrome instead of by launching the game from the Old School RuneScape Mobile app.
