Sandstone rocks are a mineable rock, which require level 35 Mining and contain sandstone. Sandstone rocks can be found in the Bandit Camp Quarry south of Bandit Camp, at the Necropolis mine in the Necropolis, and at the Cape Conch mine on The Great Conch island. The first two areas are subject to desert heat, so players mining there need waterskins, the circlet of water, or the Desert amulet 4 to avoid taking damage.
When sandstone is mined, the player randomly receives one of the four sizes of sandstone blocks, each rewarding experience depending on the size. Sandstone respawns quickly, so a player can mine continuously at a group of only 3-4 rocks. Thus, it can be quickly mined for fast experience. When sandstone is mined, the player randomly receives one of four possible sizes of sandstone blocks. The sandstone can be used at the Sandstorm grinder, found just west of the Quarry, to convert un-noted into buckets of sand. The amount of sand produced per sandstone varies, as larger chunks provide more. This comes at the cost of 50 per bucket of sand produced, and the player is required to supply their own (noted or un-noted) buckets.
Players can use 3-tick mining (3t4s) to dramatically increase sandstone yield and experience gained, though it is significantly more intensive. Buckets of sand per hour tends to range from 3000–4500 when mined normally, or 5000–6500 when using tick manipulation, depending on the player's focus and proficiency. While using the Sandstorm, it is highly recommended that players bring stamina potions or other energy restoring items, as the player will likely run out of energy when running to deposit.
To increase sandstone yield, it is recommended to wear the following mining enhancers, as they have the chance to activate while mining sandstone:
- Expert mining gloves guarantees one extra sandstone is obtained from the rock before it depletes.
- Celestial ring and Varrock armour 2 or higher gives a 10% chance to mine an extra sandstone of the same size, and can be used together.
- Mining cape gives a 5% chance to mine an extra sandstone of the same size.
Sandstone rocks cannot give gems; however, clue scrolls can be obtained from them.
