The Stone of Jas is an ancient and immensely powerful artefact, created and left on Gielinor by the mysterious deity Jas. According to Melzar, it was used by the gods to create all life and magic.[1] Magically bound to the Stone by Jas, the Dragonkin unwillingly operate as a defence mechanism for the Stone.[2][3]
As one of the universe’s oldest and greatest powers, it has played a significant role in the history of Gielinor — most notably as a central cause of the God Wars. Like the Staff of Armadyl and Elder Horn, it is coveted by both mortals and gods for its immense power. Its power has been wielded by numerous individuals throughout history, many of whom rose to prominence or notoriety through its influence.
Names
[edit | edit source]Throughout its history, the Stone of Jas has been called by different names by various groups.[4][5][6]
- Saradominists: "Eye of Saradomin"
- Guthixians: "Fist of Guthix"
- Zarosians: artefact "Primus"
History
[edit | edit source]
First Age
[edit | edit source]The first recorded mention of the Stone of Jas dates back to the First Age. Guthix is said to have discovered the Stone by unknown means and harnessed its immense power to shape the world of Gielinor and its future inhabitants. Guthix then used the Stone to create runestones for early humans so they could produce magic. At this time, the Dragonkin seemed unable to prevent Guthix from using the stone, likely because it had not yet been used enough for the Dragonkin to gain the power necessary to oppose him. This is likely true for many of its future users as well.
After a few millennia, Guthix descended into a deep slumber beneath Gielinor, and left the stone on what is known today as Lunar Isle.[7][8]
Second Age
[edit | edit source]At the dawn of the Second Age, a Fremennik seer by the name of V accidentally stumbled upon the Stone[9] and used its power to create Lunar Magics, as well as the runic altars[8] and the art of Runecraft.[10][11] The Stone's presence within the cave had altered the surrounding rocks, transforming them into what would become known as rune essence.[12]

The Stone vanished after V encountered it, and its whereabouts remained unknown for some time.[13] It eventually came into the possession of Zaros, who concealed it within his capital, Senntisten. In the late Second Age, Zaros’s general, the mahjarrat Zamorak, used the Stone as part of a plot to overthrow his master.[8] Using the Stone alongside the Staff of Armadyl, Zamorak siphoned Zaros' power, ascending to godhood and causing Zaros to disappear from the world. This event became known as the Betrayal of Zaros and marked the beginning of the Third Age.
Third Age
[edit | edit source]Shortly after, Armadyl and Saradomin banished Zamorak and claimed the artefacts.[14][8] Possession of the Stone went to Saradomin, who then hid it beneath the ocean south of Hallowvale.[15] Aliya and Zachariah, Justiciars of the Lion and Owl, were tasked with protecting the artefact;[16] Aliya was tasked with building a temple to house it,[17] while Zachariah was charged with hunting down and slaying those who would try to claim it, including Porazdir, one of Zamorak's generals.[18] It was also at this time that the Stone came to be known as "The Eye of Saradomin".
Some years after his banishment, Zamorak returned to Gielinor and sought to reclaim the Stone. Thus began the God Wars. Many sought to claim the Stone, including servants of Zaros,[19] who learned of the artefact's location and informed Praefectus Classis Perseriya, commander of the Zarosian navy.[20] Though the ensuing Battle for the Eye resulted in heavy losses on both sides, it was Perseriya's attempt to call in reinforcements that ultimately resulted in the loss of the Zarosian fleet.[21] Due to the presence of the Stone, her spell to summon reinforcements was warped, tearing open a rift into the Scar, a particularly dangerous part of Abyssal Space.[22][23] As a result, abyssal creatures came through the opening, forcing Aliya to use the Stone to seal the abyssal rift.[24] She then created The Great Guardian and many other rune guardians to protect the temple in the event the rift was reopened.[25] After the rift was sealed, the Stone's location had become known, making it too dangerous to remain at the Temple of the Eye. As a result, it was moved to a cavern that would later be known as the Fist of Guthix.[26]

The war would last for thousands of years, with Zamorak eventually reclaiming the Stone and entrusting it to Lowerniel Drakan. Drakan concealed it beneath the vampyric city of Darkmeyer,[26] where its immense power seeped into the bedrock, creating the daeyalt deposits[27]—much like it once affected the caves on Lunar Isle. Near the end of the God Wars, Zamorak reclaimed the Stone and brought it to Forinthry. Saradomin, Armadyl, and Bandos all found and cornered Zamorak, who struck the stone in an act of desperation, triggering a massive explosion that wiped out the entire area and created the Wilderness.[8] The shock of the event awoke Guthix from his long slumber, who wept after witnessing the destruction of the God Wars and the scarred landscape. Guthix decided that these gods were not fit to inhabit Gielinor, so he enacted the Edicts of Guthix and banished all of them. This marked the end of the Third Age.
Fourth Age
[edit | edit source]At the beginning of the Fourth Age, Guthix hid the Stone deep underground, and devised powerful safeguards to prevent it from being misused.[28] He appointed a guardian to protect the artefact should it ever be discovered, while his followers constructed a temple complex meant to serve as the first line of defence. The Stone remained hidden and undisturbed throughout the Fourth Age, and its lingering energy may have given rise to the Tears of Guthix.
Fifth Age
[edit | edit source]
During the 169th year of the Fifth Age, the Stone's location was finally unveiled by an adventurer seeking to thwart the plans of the Mahjarrat Lucien, who desired to use the Stone's power to achieve godhood. Deceiving Movario, a treasure hunter under Lucien's employ, the adventurer descended far below the Lumbridge Swamp Caves to unearth an ancient temple dedicated to Guthix. After defeating the Stone's guardian, the adventurer was accosted by Movario and then by Lucien. Lucien was successful in escaping with the Stone, and his whereabouts (as well as those of the Stone) are presently unknown.
Location timeline
[edit | edit source]- Guthix found the Stone as well as Gielinor, bringing over many races to inhabit it, marking the First Age. He created runestones with the Stone for Gielinor's new inhabitants to use. After a few millennia, he went to sleep, hoping to be forgotten, and left the Stone behind.
- The Stone was found in the Lunar Isle mine at the beginning of the Second Age by V, a Fremennik seer who founded the Moon Clan after becoming the first lunar mage. The Moon Clan was able to practice magic beyond the reliance on runes and constructed temples for the runecrafting altars. The Stone disappeared to an unknown location after being touched by V.[13]
- Zaros eventually came into possession of the Stone and held it at Senntisten. His general, the mahjarrat Zamorak, used the Stone as part of his plan to usurp Zaros and obtain godhood in the late Second Age.
- At the beginning of the Third Age, Saradomin stole the Stone from Zamorak and had his Justiciars hide the Stone in the Temple of the Eye beneath the ocean east of Hallowvale. The Zarosian navy tried to reclaim the Stone during the Battle for the Eye to no avail.
- After the Battle for the Eye, it was no longer safe to keep the Stone in the temple, and it was moved by Saradominists to a location in Forinthry referred to as the Fist of Guthix, likely near the present-day Ferox Enclave Dungeon.
- Some time after Hallowvale and the Justiciars fell, the Stone was retrieved by Zamorak and entrusted to Lowerniel Drakan. Drakan relocated the Stone to the caves under Darkmeyer.
- Zamorak reclaimed the Stone during the final years of the God Wars and brought it to Forinthry, where he used it to amplify his powers and obliterated the region.
- The destruction of Forinthry awakened Guthix as the Anima Mundi cried out in pain, and he established the Edicts. Afterwards, the Stone of Jas was hidden by Guthix in the Ancient Guthixian Temple. The Balance Elemental was created by Guthix to defend the Stone.
- The Balance Elemental's protection remained intact up until Year 169 in the Fifth Age when the Balance Elemental was slain by the player. This resulted in the mahjarrat Lucien stealing the Stone, allowing him to possess both the Stone and the Staff of Armadyl ahead of the next Ritual of Rejuvenation.
Uncertain locations
[edit | edit source]The Stone is also associated with several locations whose place in the timeline is unclear:
- Rune essence mine: The Stone was located there long enough for rune essence deposits to form.
- Kourend: The Stone may have been located there at some point, potentially forming the dense essence mine.
- Fountain of Rune: It is suggested by Movario's notes that the Stone was once located there, amongst Dragonkin ruins.
- Ungael: The lab notes left by Zorgoth suggest that the Stone, or some other similar artefact, was once located there, as lingering energy from it remains in the area.
- Ancient Cavern: The Stone is referenced on the eleventh ancient page by a person of questionable sanity, who questioned whether the Stone was once there, or if it will be there in the future.
The Dragonkin Curse
[edit | edit source]
Jas bound the Dragonkin to the Stone, using them as protectors against their own will. This bond to the Stone causes the Dragonkin to grow more powerful and enraged the more the Stone is used.
The Dragonkin refer to it as their curse, suffering immense pain whenever its power is wielded by anyone other than Jas. This pain is only alleviated when the Dragonkin go on a rampage against the "false users" of the Stone — those who have touched it and used its power. Robert the Strong, in his relentless pursuit of the Dragonkin, mentions that the only way to defeat the Dragonkin is to turn their curse against them.
Some Dragonkin succumbed to the curse, acting out in rage to try to alleviate the pain, whereas some Dragonkin resisted the curse, and seeked ways to lift the curse or otherwise get around it. Fittingly, the Dragonkin emblem features the Stone of Jas on one side, with the other half being a compass rose.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The Stone seems to work as some kind of magical conduit, catalysing and imbuing the very world around its physical location with magical energy.
- All major rune essence sources, such as the Lunar Isle mine, Daeyalt essence mine and Rune essence mine are places where the Stone has rested.
- Its influence can also be seen in other magical conduits such as the Tears of Guthix, the Fountain of Rune, and the Temple of the Eye runic portals.
- The Stone of Jas is vastly more powerful than most relics the player encounters in their adventures. Its power is shown most clearly in While Guthix Sleeps, where it temporarily boosts the player’s combat stats to 255, the single highest stat increase in the game. Only a handful of artefacts, such as the Staff of Armadyl and the Elder Horn, approach its power and significance.
- The name of the Stone may be an inside-joke, since it is a real-life acronym for "Java Application Server" - which did, indeed, give the world of RuneScape life.
