The Melee combat tutor, whose name is Harlan, is one of the three basic combat instructors found on a small hill outside of Lumbridge Castle, alongside Mikasi, the magic combat tutor and Nemarti, the ranged combat tutor. New players who talk to him can acquire a training sword as well as a training shield. If a player has achieved level 99 in Defence, they can purchase a Defence cape and its respective hood from him for 99,000 coins.

The melee instructor is close to Wilfred, the master of Woodcutting.
