Hops patch

Hops patches are used with the Farming skill to grow hops and barley used for brewing, and fibre crops used for spinning and weaving. Players can pay a nearby farmer to eliminate disease risk altogether, or alternatively use various types of compost and water the patch to reduce (but not eliminate) the chance of disease. The number of seeds required for hops patches varies; with fibre crops requiring 3, while hops and barley require 4.

Harvesting a plant grown in the hops patch tends to result in a relatively high yield, similar to most produce grown in allotments (see variable crop yield). At level 99, using both ultracompost and a pair of magic secateurs, a hops patch can be expected to yield 27 crops on average. Flax, Hemp, and Cotton may yield more/less (35/25/15 respectively) per sailing resource poll. After a hops patch has been harvested, the patch has to be re-planted. Hops on average give less experience in planting and harvesting than allotments. Hop plants are generally more susceptible to disease than herbs, although they are more hardy than crops grown in an allotment patch.[1] Hops patches do not have a compost bin nearby but do have a Tool Leprechaun.

Hop seeds are commonly used as bait while engaging in bird house trapping, due to their low cost and ease of acquisition (for a table comparing them by cost, see Bird house trapping § Seeds).

  1. ^ Each sack or basket must be fully filled with produce to serve as protection payment (i.e. 10 produce for sacks, and 5 for baskets).
  2. ^ N×10 mins means the crop will grow a little and can be watered again for each 10 minutes. This happens N times until it is fully grown.
  3. ^ The experience awarded once at the start when planting the crop.
  4. ^ The experience awarded for each hop harvested. The expected yield depends on Farming level and equipment. See Variable crop yield.

    Trivia

    [edit | edit source]
    • Until the update that introduced Sailing, hops patches were exclusively used to grow plants for brewing (hops and barley), as well as jute which is used for weaving. The update introduced means to grow the already existing flax, as well as cotton and hemp.
      • Volume 3 of Gielnor's Flora, which was added to the game before the other fibre plants, states that the reason jute is grown alongside hops is due to its similarity as a crop.
    • Interestingly, while most of the non-hop plants that can be grown in these patches are not closely related to hops in the real world, hemp is in the same family: Cannabaceae.
