Zeal Tokens are the reward currency from playing Soul Wars. Players on the losing team can get up to 40 zeal, players on the winning team can get up to 60 zeal. In the case of a draw players can get up to 50 zeal. When playing clan matches, the Zeal earned will be exactly half of whatever would be earned in a public lobby, meaning a maximum of 30 zeal can be gained per win there. The points can be exchanged at Nomad for various rewards.

Earning Zeal

[edit | edit source]

There are several actions that can be performed in the game that will award Zeal Tokens at the end of a game. Each type of action has a contribution limit, after which more such actions will not increase the Zeal awarded. For example, with the contribution limit of Soul fragments being 32, depositing 36 fragments will always result in the exact same amount of Zeal earned as depositing just 32. The following table shows a list of contribution types, and their contribution limit.

Action Limit Description
Sacrifice Soul fragments 30 Sacrificing soul fragments reduces the opposing Avatar's strength. Once its strength reaches 0%, fragments can no longer be sacrificed. Depositing fragments when the Obelisk is not under your team's control will reduce the efficacy of the sacrifice, and will award the player with less Zeal. Depositing fragments when the Avatar is already weakened also has a slightly reduced Zeal reward.
Capturing areas 6 Capturing the Soul Obelisk or either of the graveyards will make sacrifices of either soul fragments or bones more effective. Zeal are only awarded to players present in the area the moment the capture finishes.
Deal damage to the Avatar 260 Killing the opponent's Avatar of Destruction or Creation is the main objective of the game. Dealing damage is only possible after the Avatar has been weakened using soul fragments on the Soul Obelisk.
Killing players Unknown Killing enemy players will reward some zeal. It is believed the amount of Zeal awarded is proportional to the enemy player's Combat level[confirmation needed], and the variety in the amount of enemy players killed [confirmation needed].
Burying bones 15 Players can bury bones in either of the two graveyards, or in the player's base. Doing so will strengthen the friendly Avatar slightly. Burying bones in a graveyard that is not controlled by the player's team will reduce the efficacy of the sacrifice, and will award less Zeal[confirmation needed]
Killing Forgotten Souls or Wolves Unknown Although killing Forgotten Souls is generally the main way to gather fragments, just killing them without being able to use Soul Fragments on the Obelisk will still increase the Zeal awarded per game. Because of this, if one team has a hold of the Obelisk during the entire duration of the game, it can still be advantageous to the other team to kill Forgotten Souls anyways.
Attacking shielded avatar Unknown Even when not dealing damage to the opposing Avatar, a small amount of Zeal is still awarded. This includes when the opposing Avatar is at 100% strength, or when a splashing weapon such as the Cursed goblin hammer is used to attack. However, splashing using Magic spells while having -64 Magic attack bonus will not result in a hitsplat of 0, thus not awarding any Zeal.
Using Bandages Unknown Although using bandages will not grant any Zeal in normal situations, in some situations where players participated partially, but still earned low amounts of zeal, the use of bandages may reward the player with a very small amount of (typically 1 or 2) zeal.

Aside from these actions, the amount of Zeal awarded for a game is also affected by:

  • The outcome of the game. When compared to a loss, a draw will grant roughly 1.25 times as many Zeal Tokens, and a win results in roughly 1.5 times the Zeal.
  • The duration of the game. For maximum Zeal rewards, the game must last at least 10:15 minutes (have 4:45 time remaining before finishing). Shorter games will award reduced zeal.

Maximum Zeal strategies

[edit | edit source]

There are several methods that award the maximum amount of Zeal, being 60 for a win, 50 for a draw, or 40 for a loss. The following non-exhaustive list features some combinations of actions that will result in the maximum amount of Zeal. Note that the game will need to last at least 10:15 minutes to grant this maximum amount of Zeal.

Action 1 Action 2 Action 3 Action 4
Kill 2 Forgotten Souls Deposit 8 fragments Deal 260 Avatar damage Capture 6 areas
Kill 6 Forgotten Souls Deposit 24 fragments Deal 260 Avatar damage N/A
Kill 6 Forgotten Souls Deposit 24 fragments Bury 5 bones Capture 6 areas
Kill 8 Forgotten Souls Deposit 30 fragments Capture 6 areas N/A
Attack Avatar [clarification needed] Deposit 30 fragments Capture 6 areas N/A

Although the bottom strategy is generally less convenient, relying on other players killing Forgotten Souls and grabbing their fragments, it is one of the few methods that will result in the maximum amount of Zeal, without gaining any Hitpoints experience, which may be desireable for Combat pures.

Upgrades

[edit | edit source]

A player can imbue certain items with Zeal Tokens. Imbuing an item provides bonuses and appends an (i) to the item name.

Imbues from the Nightmare Zone are also available here. However, players who imbued their items at the Nightmare Zone cannot un-imbue their items for Zeal Tokens. For the purposes of imbuing, each Zeal Token is equivalent to 2500 Nightmare Zone points. The cost of imbuing is halved after completion of the Hard Combat Achievements.

Imbuing an item provides extra bonuses and appends an (i) suffix to the item's name. Imbued items can be un-imbued, which removes the bonuses from the item and refunds 100% of the reward points used to imbue it.

Imbuing all available items would require a total of 3,950 reward points.

Experience

[edit | edit source]

Players must have at least level 30 in the chosen skill to purchase XP for it, and the amount granted is higher if the level of the skill chosen is higher. Players can spend 1, 10, 100, or a custom amount of Tokens.

No more than 1,000,000 experience can be redeemed with Zeal Tokens each day.[1]

Zeal Tokens used Level Experience
Attack / Strength / Defence / Hitpoints Magic / Ranged Prayer
1 25-34 30 27 14

The formula, which this table is based on, is as shown below. The amounts are awarded per Zeal Token traded in.

Exp=Level2600×N where

  • Exp is experience gained,
  • Level is current level of that skill (should be at least 30),
  • The factor N:
    • If the skill is Prayer: N=14
    • If the skill is Magic or Ranged: N=27
    • If the skill is Attack, Strength, Defence or Hitpoints: N=30
  • The indicate that the expression should be rounded down to the nearest whole number.
