Bird house trapping

Bird house trapping is a Hunter technique that is used to catch birds. With this technique the player sets up bird houses on Fossil Island and fills them with seeds. The player then has to wait around 50 minutes for the bird houses to passively fill with birds.

Bird houses

Bird house traps are made using the Crafting skill requiring logs and a piece of clockwork with a hammer and chisel. They are then placed in designated spots on Fossil Island to catch birds, providing a passive method of training Hunter and gaining resources.

Additionally, ironmen will need a Construction level of 25 to build a crafting table 2 for assembling clockwork.

If a birdhouse run takes 80 seconds, then an hour of doing birdhouse runs would be 45 laps or 180 birdhouses. The effective XP/hour rate is therefore 4 * 45 * BirdhouseXP. The time taken per birdhouse run factors in the time taken to swap from doing something else into doing birdhouses and back again. The birdhouse run portion (banking for the items needed for the run, harvesting and replacing the birdhouses, and then banking the harvest) takes around 70 seconds.

Seeds

To arm the trap, players need 10 low level or 5 high level hop seeds, herb seeds, flower seeds, bush seeds, or allotment seeds. By using less seeds than the required amount, different types of seeds can be used to set up the same trap (for example, it's possible to use a stack of 7 Barley seeds and fill the remaining 3 with Hammerstone).

All seeds give the exact same rewards, so it is recommended to use the seeds that are cheapest or easiest to obtain.^[1]

Low-level ironmen can buy a wide variety of seeds from Draynor Seed Market or Amelia's Seed Shop in the farming guild at a relative low price. The 135 seeds in stock can be bought for 377 gp. Nevertheless, ironmen should consider hopping worlds as the number of seeds in stock varies between 5 and 20 per world (with a restock time of 1 minute). Ironmen may also find pickpocketing a Master Farmer to be a great source of surplus low level seeds.

Locations

There are four spots on Fossil Island on which players can place bird house traps, indicated by the icon.

The first and second are found in the Verdant Valley, south of the Museum Camp.
The third is found west of the ancient shroom in the Mushroom Forest, and directly north of the magic mushtree.
The fourth is found by the entrance to the Tar Swamp.

All of these spots are easily accessible by using the Digsite pendant teleport to Fossil Island after using the pendant on the strange machine at the House on the Hill, then using the magic mushtree in the House on the Hill.

Catching birds

After the bird house trap has been set and filled with seeds, it will passively capture birds at random intervals (an average of once every 5 minutes), up to a maximum of 10. To claim the Hunter experience and loot, players must return to the bird house trap to empty and dismantle it. The bird house will be lost in the process, but the clockwork will be returned, meaning players only need four clockworks to set all their bird houses indefinitely, after which they will only need to bring a hammer, chisel, logs, and seeds. However, it is recommended to bring an additional clockwork, as building the next bird house between the sites speeds up the process.

When ready to harvest, bird houses have a reset option, which will empty the bird house and place a new bird house with a delay of one tick more than doing the process manually. If players wish to not bring an extra clockwork to pre-make bird houses, this process will also automatically construct a bird house and place it, though this is also slower than doing so manually. If the player has multiple types of logs in their inventory, there will still be a prompt for the type of log to use. This automated reset process also still requires adding the seeds manually.

Recommended setup

The fastest route is to first teleport with the digsite pendant to Fossil Island and use the magic mushtree to Verdant Valley. The northern birdhouse should be checked first, then the southern. Next, teleport with the mushtree to Mushroom Meadow and check the birdhouse to the north, then run south to the Tar Swamp to check the final birdhouse.

Bringing an extra birdhouse or clockwork allows for the birdhouses to be crafted while running to the next location, saving a significant amount of time. The Imcando hammer may be brought in place of a hammer to save an inventory slot. A hunter potion or a super hunter potion may be brought to boost Hunter by +3 or +6 respectively to increase the odds of receiving bird nests or gain the level necessary to place the next tier of birdhouse.

If doing multiple birdhouse runs in a row, the player can log out while standing near the Tar Swamp birdhouse, in order to avoid the relatively long run south on the second run. The player would have to bring 4 extra logs to make this work.

Players may also wish to bring a Pestle and mortar in their inventory to crush the bird nests as they receive them. Doing this while running between birdhouse spots can save the player time when making saradomin brews by hand, or save the player a trip to Nardah to have Wesley crush them for 50gp each.

Loot

Once a birdhouse is full, it can be collected for loot, which includes raw bird meat, feathers, and the clockwork that was used to build the birdhouse.

Birdhouses will also give varying numbers of bird nests, dependent on the tier of birdhouse and Hunter level.^[2] Each birdhouse will give at most 1 seed nest, followed by 10 chances to get nests off the nest table. The nest table drops regular empty nests, ring nests, egg nests, and rarely also clue nests (replaced with scroll boxes if X Marks the Spot is completed).

In addition, wearing a strung rabbit foot will replace about 5% of the empty nest drops with ring nests or egg nests.^[3] This is different from the bird nest mechanic while Woodcutting, which reduces the number of seed nests.

The seeds used do not affect amount of nests received.^[1] Dismantling a birdhouse does not have a Hunter level requirement, meaning boosts only need to be used when placing higher tier birdhouses and not when dismantling them.

The birdhouse must be completely depleted of seeds before any rewards can be claimed from it. Emptying the birdhouse early (before the approximate 50 minutes) will save the clockwork but lose the birdhouse, the remaining seeds, and any loot that might have accumulated. A warning message is given in case the player selects the option to empty before the birdhouse is full. The time remaining can be roughly determined by checking the seed level in the birdhouse.

Seed nest

At most one seed nest is given per birdhouse. Having a higher Hunter level will make obtaining a seed nest more likely. The tier of bird house has no effect on the rate of receiving a seed nest.

Other nests

The nest table will be rolled 10 times. The chance of a successful roll is based on both type of birdhouse and Hunter level, with more nests provided with a higher Hunter level and on higher tier birdhouses.^[4] The rate is constant at levels below 50. Boosting above 99 will increase the expected number of nests per birdhouse.^[5]

After a successful roll for the other nest table, an additional series of rolls is performed for clue nests. It is possible to obtain multiple clues from the same birdhouse, but once at least one clue has been awarded, further rolls do not attempt to give clues. Completing tiers of Combat Achievements will increase the rate of receiving easy, medium, hard, and elite clue nests. Clues are not awarded if the player already has a clue of that level.

Note: If the player has completed X Marks the Spot, clue nests are replaced with one scroll box and one empty nest. Note that the empty nest drops on the ground instead of going to the inventory.

The following rarities assume the nest roll shown above was successful, and are attempted once on each roll until a clue has been given (up to 10 attempts).

12 February 2025 (Update \| poll)	A "Reset" option has been added to full birdhouses, allowing players to dismantle an existing birdhouse and automatically build and place a new one reusing the clockwork mechanism from the previous birdhouse. Players can now build and place a birdhouse directly on an empty patch with a single click, provided they have all the necessary tools and materials. Building and placing birdhouses will now use pre-made birdhouses the player is carrying before attempting to make one out of materials.
15 February 2023 (Update \| poll)	Allotment, bush, and flower seeds can now be used to fill bird houses.
21 July 2021 (Update)	Clue nest rates are now affected by completion of Combat Achievements, and multiple clue nests can be obtained from a single birdhouse. Previously, there was a chance between 1/295 and 1/150 to get a clue on each of the 10 rolls, depending on Hunter level, with a further 1/1,000 chance to award a beginner clue if that roll failed. Only 1 clue could be awarded per birdhouse.^[6]
7 April 2021 (Update)	Strung rabbit foot slightly increases the chance of nests containing bird eggs from bird house trapping.
17 March 2021 (Update \| poll)	There is now a small chance of receiving bird's egg nests when emptying a full birdhouse.
2 May 2019 (Update)	A message now appears when seeds are added to a Bird house, making it easier to see when this has been done.
18 April 2019 (Update \| poll)	Bird houses now have a left click/tap 'build' option which will erect the best bird house in your inventory.
22 November 2018 (Update \| poll)	The overall number of nests received has been lowered. Prior to this update, the number of nests received was based only on the type of birdhouse and not Hunter level. Herb seeds can now be used to fill bird houses.
26 July 2018 (Update)	Fixed an issue where birdhouses might not update when logging in near one.
3 May 2018 (Update)	Birdhouses no longer ask how many seeds you wish to insert; they simply assume you wish to insert as many as possible. The Raw bird meat from Birdhouses is now placed on the ground rather than in your inventory when you harvest the houses.
18 January 2018 (Update \| poll)	Dismantling birdhouses will now return the clockwork used to build the birdhouse. All tiers of birdhouses can now hold up to 10 birds, with higher-tier birdhouses yielding increased chance of nests and seeds. Higher tiers of birdhouse have been introduced for Maple, Mahogany, Yew, Magic, and Redwood logs.
14 September 2017 (Update)	Relocated a birdhouse to be inside of Verdant Valley to assist in getting to it via Mushtree.

[2] Effective XP/hour is not real time XP/hour. Effective rates show the expected XP/hour for the time spent doing the method. If a birdhouse run takes 80 seconds, then an hour of doing birdhouse runs would be 45 laps or 180 birdhouses. The effective XP/hour rate is therefore 4 * 45 * BirdhouseXP. The time taken per birdhouse run factors in the time taken to swap from doing something else into doing birdhouses and back again. The birdhouse run portion (banking for the items needed for the run, harvesting and replacing the birdhouses, and then banking the harvest) takes around 70 seconds.
