Tormented Demons are extremely powerful demons bound into a state of perpetual agony, healing their bodies as they burn, summoned by the Mahjarrat Lucien after he teleports away the Stone of Jas during While Guthix Sleeps. They can be found throughout the Ancient Guthixian Temple after completion of the quest.
Tormented demons count as greater demons for the progression of Slayer tasks. As demons, they are susceptible to the effects of demonbane weapons.
They are primarily killed for their tormented synapses, which are used to create high-tier demonbane weapons, as well as their burning claw drop, two of which are combined into the burning claws, a special attack weapon that sits in between the dragon dagger and dragon claws in terms of power, but are more effective against demons (such as tormented demons).

Multi-combat mechanics
[edit | edit source]Although the entire Ancient Guthixian Temple is considered a single-way combat zone by the game, the temple is a unique outlier in the fact that some areas are pseudo-multicombat areas. While in the temple, an icon that depicts a tormented demon's head (shown below) can be seen in the user interface, indicating the number of demons the player can engage at one time. Other players will be unable to attack a demon that is engaged in combat with another player until that player leaves by any means.
-
Single-Combat: 10 demons—The plinth chamber in the south-east contains eight demons in a single-combat area. Two additional single-demon rooms can be found in the north-west of the temple (directly west of the temple entrance).
-
Double-Combat: 10 demons—The central chamber and the four eastern rooms each contain two demons.
-
Triple-Combat: 6 demons—Two rooms in the south-west contain three demons each.
Tormented demons are unaggressive and will not attack unless attacked first.
Fight overview
[edit | edit source]Tormented demons can pray against and attack using every combat style. They possess the ability to routefind, allowing them to move around objects, and can also stack on top of each other. If they cannot reach the player when attempting to melee, they will instead randomly fire magic and ranged attacks.
Every 150 health lost since their last prayer swap (roughly 25% of their max health), they will change their protection prayer to the last combat style they were damaged with, and will stop attacking for 6 ticks (3.6s).
They will briefly bind the player in place roughly every 60 ticks (36s; 10 attacks) and disable run (Ctrl clicking still allows running), then release two fire bombs: one on the player's position as of the start of the attack, and a second on a random one of the 8 adjacent squares, assuming that it is a walkable tile. The bind will then be released and players have 2 ticks to move off of the target tiles before they explode. Demons always change their combat style after this attack.
Tormented demons usually have a fire shield that reduces damage done by non-demonbane weapons/spells and non-abyssal weapons by 20%. They will drop this shield after the player's first attack and after each fire bomb attack; the shield remains down until they are attacked once. Slower weapons will deal significant bonus damage to unshielded tormented demons. They also become defenseless, indicated by the flames on their body disappearing, for approximately 30 ticks (18s; 5 attacks) into the fight until after their fire bomb attack, after which the 30 tick timer begins again. Attacking them while defenseless will provide 100% accuracy meaning guaranteed hits.
The clickbox of a tormented demon will shift whenever their shield animation plays (every few ticks). This can affect clicking away from the demon during a fire bomb. Changing their shift-click to walk through is a good preventative measure for this, as well as tagging Tormented Demons with their tag style set to hull in order to more accurately see their clickbox.
If the player chooses to attack multiple tormented demons simultaneously, their attack behaviour changes: one will use melee if possible, and the other magic or ranged, and their attacks start out staggered so they can be prayed against. If three or more demons are attacking the player, the third and any more demons will release single bombs at the player.
If demons are forced out of combat due to teleportation or being unable to attack their target, they will restore their health to full.
Money making
[edit | edit source]The following money making guide is available for Tormented Demons:
| Method | Hourly profit | Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Killing Tormented Demons | 5,268,182 |
Drops
[edit | edit source]Drop rates are estimated based on 110,286 samples from the Drop Rate Project, unless otherwise cited.

Excluding unique drops, the average Tormented Demon kill is worth 17,448.
Upon death, a drop will be rolled until the roll results in a success, as described below:[1]
- Roll 1/500 for the tormented synapse drop.
- If unsuccessful, roll for a burning claw drop.
- If unsuccessful, roll for a smouldering part (Smouldering pile of flesh, Smouldering gland, Smouldering heart).
- If all the above rolls are unsuccessful, the standard drop table is rolled.

Development history
[edit | edit source]Tormented demons were released alongside While Guthix Sleeps on 26 November 2008. They are nearly the same as their RuneScape 3 counterparts but with several differences:
- There are significantly more tormented demons throughout the entirety of the Ancient Guthixian Temple. In RuneScape 3, there are only six demons, all of whom are near the plinth where the Stone of Jas once was, while in Old School RuneScape, there are twenty-six; eight by the plinth, two by the door leading to the inner section of the temple, eight to the western section of the temple (one each to the north-western chambers, and two sets of three to the south-west) and another eight to the eastern dolmens, in four sets of two.
- The tormented demons in Old School RuneScape are unaggressive, whereas those in RuneScape 3 never become tolerant to the player.
- In Old School RuneScape, tormented demons are considered greater demons for the purpose of a slayer assignment. In RuneScape 3, tormented demons were not an assignable Slayer task for a considerable amount of time after release. Later on, they were allowed to be assigned as part of a Slayer task, though the player had to pay 50 slayer points to be assigned them; they could also be killed as part of a demon cluster task on 8 July 2019.
- While the demons in both games attack with multiple combat styles, their special attacks are quite different:
- The demons in RuneScape 3 would periodically throw an AoE magic attack when changing combat styles. In Old School RuneScape, they instead bind the player before launching magical fire around them, dealing heavy damage if not avoided.
- If the demon was using melee but was attacked from a distance, in RuneScape 3 it would change combat styles immediately. In Old School RuneScape, they will only do so if they cannot reach their target, but would quickly revert to melee once they returned in range.
- The demons in RuneScape 3 would change overhead prayers after taking a minimum of 30 (3,000) damage, while the demons in Old School RuneScape do so after taking a minimum of 150 damage.
- The demons' shield effects were much stronger in RuneScape 3, it would reduce damage by 75% of the original amount, necessitating darklight or holy water to remove it. In Old School RuneScape, the shield only reduces non-demonic damage by 20%.
- The demons in Old School RuneScape take additional damage from 5/6/7-tick weapons at specific intervals (which likewise attack faster at these intervals), whereas this mechanic is not featured in RuneScape 3.
- The demons in RuneScape 3 originally had four unique drops on release: in addition to the dragon claws, they also dropped the ruined dragon armour slice, ruined dragon armour lump and ruined dragon armour shard, which would be used to create the dragon platebody. A fifth drop, dragon limbs, was added on 20 November 2012. As these rewards were already present in Old School RuneScape (the dragon claws from the Chambers of Xeric, the dragon platebody from Dragon Slayer II with a dragon metal shard and dragon metal lump, and the dragon limbs from adamant and rune dragons), the demons were instead given different rewards, namely the tormented synapse and burning claw, as their unique drops.
- Tormented demons in RuneScape 3 were originally released with 326 hitpoints and zero offensive or defensive stats. The demons in Old School RuneScape have 600 hitpoints and have offensive and defensive stats added to give them a distinct weakness:[2]
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Tormented demons are the second non-boss monster to have a Master Combat Achievement (Three Times the Thrashing) the other being the Deathly rangers and Deathly mages from the Chambers of Xeric (No Time for Death), though they are the first non-boss monster that requires the player to actually kill them in order to complete the task.
