Gryphons are Slayer monsters requiring 51 Slayer to kill. They inhabit the Great Conch and require completion of the Troubled Tortugans quest and 45 Sailing to access. Wings Spread must be unlocked at a slayer master for 80 points to be given as a task by Nieve/Steve or Duradel. You can also get this task from Chaeldar or Vannaka without unlocking them with points as long as the quest is completed. They commonly attack Tortugans.
Gryphons attack with melee and have a special attack allowing them to knock back players with too low of an equipped weight with a threshold around 30kg. If the player's equipped weight meets this threshold, a gryphon using the special attack will be stunned instead; additionally, the player may click the Gryphon within 2 ticks of it being stunned to knock it back one tile and perform one additional attack free of attack delay. Unlike the boss and superior variants, the player will not be punished for missing this counterattack. Despite its use in the prerequisite quest, a tortugan shield does not have to be equipped while fighting normal gryphons. It is, however, required for both the superior and boss variants and is generally recommended due to its considerable weight. Gryphons have an elemental weakness to air spells, but melee is typically a stronger option, especially considering that melee armour is typically heavier.
With the Slayer reward Bigger and Badder unlocked for 50 Slayer reward points, there is a chance for their superior version, the dire gryphon, to spawn. It has the same mechanics as regular gryphons, except the players will take guaranteed damage after every hit if a tortugan shield is not equipped. The Slayer reward Wings Spread allows Nieve and Duradel to assign gryphon tasks.
A boss variant, the shellbane gryphon, can be fought while on task.
Locations
[edit | edit source]Gryphons can be found in two dungeons: a task-only eastern cave and a western cave in which they may be fought off-task. Both caves have a mix of single-way areas and multicombat areas that are cannonable. The multicombat areas are limited to a single southern room in each cave.

Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Gryphons are mythical creatures said to have the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle - though rather than an eagle, this gryphon appears to be based on a herring gull.
- A gryphon NPC was present in the cache of the August 2025 Sailing Stress Test, but was not accessible and had the same model as a sandcrab.
- Grimgnash, an NPC encountered during the Grim Tales quest, is a griffin. It is unknown what connection there may be between griffins like Grimgnash and gryphons like those found on the Great Conch.
