This article is about the Strength skill. For information on training Strength, see Melee training (F2P) (P2P).

Strength is a player's power in melee combat. As a player raises their Strength level, they can deal more damage against opponents. A high Strength level is often favoured by player-killers over their Attack level because it raises max hit, helping to generate the burst damage necessary to kill other players faster than they can heal themselves.

Combat[edit | edit source]

Main article: Melee training

Players may receive Strength experience during combat, and the amount of experience gained is dependent on the attack style being used. Of the four melee attack styles available, Strength experience is only awarded when fighting in the aggressive or controlled stances.

When fighting in the aggressive stance, Strength experience is granted per hit, where is the amount of damage dealt. Fighting using the controlled stance, however, grants Strength experience per hit, where is the amount of damage dealt. For example, a player who hits a 1 would receive 4 Strength experience when fighting in the aggressive stance and 1.33 Strength experience when fighting in the controlled stance. The amount of experience received when fighting in the controlled stance is calculated in the same way that experience awarded to the Hitpoints skill is calculated.

The difference between these two stances is that the aggressive stance solely provides experience for the Strength and Hitpoints skills, whereas the controlled stance distributes experience equally among Strength, Attack, Defence, and Hitpoints. A player who hits a 1 would receive 1.33 experience in each one of these skills when in the controlled stance.

Fighting aggressively[edit | edit source]

In order to gain experience in Strength, players must choose the aggressive attack style. Fighting aggressively grants players an invisible +3 Strength bonus (as detailed below), meaning players will hit for higher levels of damage than they would if they were fighting accurately or defensively.

Strength bonus[edit | edit source]

Some weapons give players a Strength bonus. This bonus, represented as a single numerical value, represents the value of Strength gain. A +1 increase in Strength bonus is not equivalent to +1 Strength skill, but is rather an indicator of the ability of weapons and armour to allow the player to deal higher amounts of damage.

Generally speaking, more powerful weapons like two-handed swords have a significantly higher Strength bonus than weaker weapons like daggers made of the same metal. Similarly, the stronger the metal (and therefore the higher Attack level required to wield the weapon), the higher the Strength bonus. In that effect, rune weapons tend to have higher Strength bonus than mithril weapons, which tend to have a higher Strength bonus than iron weapons.

Equipment Strength level required Other requirements

Obsidian maul (Tzhaar-ket-om) 60 None. Used by Obsidian maul pures owing to the lack of Attack requirements.

Temporary boosts[edit | edit source]

Certain items allow a temporary boost of the Strength stat. Commonly used Strength boosts are as follows:

Item Boost amount
Strength potion 3 to 12 (3 + 10% of Strength level).
Super strength potion 5 to 19 (5 + 15% of Strength level).
Combat potion 3 to 12 (3 + 10% of Strength level). Also boosts Attack the same percentage.
Zamorak brew 2 + 12%. Also boosts Attack, lowers Defence and Hitpoints, and restores some Prayer points.
Dharok's armour set When the full set of Dharok's armour is worn, the player's Strength is increased as their health reaches zero. More specifically, the player gets 1% damage increase for every 1% health that is missing. At 1 health point at level 99 Hitpoints, the player can deal up to 98% extra damage.
Prayer Burst of Strength, Superhuman Strength, and Ultimate Strength boost Strength by 5%, 10% and 15% respectively. Chivalry boosts Strength by 18%, and Piety boosts Strength by 23%.
Black mask/Black mask (i) 15%. Also boosts Attack. Only works when fighting monsters assigned to you by a Slayer master.
Dragon battleaxe special attack 10 to 20 (Special attack increases strength by 10 + [levels drained / 4]). Lowers the user's Attack, Defence, Ranged, and Magic levels by 10%.
Salve amulet 15%. Also boosts Attack. Only works when fighting undead monsters. The effect stacks with Prayer and Strength potions or the Dragon battleaxe special attack.
Salve amulet (e) 20%. Also boosts Attack. Only works when fighting undead monsters. The effect stacks with Prayer and Strength potions or the Dragon battleaxe special attack.
Salve amulet(i) 15%. Also boosts Attack, Ranged, and Magic. Only works when fighting Undead monsters. The effect stacks with Prayer and Strength potions or the Dragon battleaxe special attack.
Salve amulet(ei) 20%. Also boosts Attack, Ranged, and Magic. Only works when fighting Undead monsters. The effect stacks with Prayer and Strength potions or the Dragon battleaxe special attack.
Black warlock 4 to 18 (4 + 15% of Strength level). This item can only be used on other players.

All percentage values given are calculated and then rounded down. For example, a 10% boost on a level 55 stat would result in 0.10 * 55 = 5.5 --> rounded down --> 5.0, resulting in a +5 boost to that stat.
