Deadman Mode

Deadman Mode (commonly abbreviated as DMM) is a variant of Old School RuneScape that released on 29 October 2015. A separate server is hosted featuring an open PvP environment, with some exceptions. Players in-game can speak to Nigel in Lumbridge Graveyard for information about Deadman Mode.
Experience gained in permanent Deadman Mode is 5x to 20x more than usual depending on the level and protection status. Experience is capped to 2x in most instanced areas (such as the Nightmare Zone and TzHaar Fight Caves).
Every player begins their adventure at combat level 3, and progress in Old School RuneScape will not be affected. All content is only available to members.
Upon dying to another player or while skulled, a bank key containing a portion of the victim's bank is dropped in addition to them losing everything they had on them. The blood money currency is gained by killing other players. One is received per kill, and can be used to purchase Deadman armour from Nigel in the Lumbridge Graveyard. It has the same bonuses as iron armour and can be reclaimed for free should the player die.

Variants
editSeasonal
editIn the past, Jagex would periodically open a brand new Deadman Seasonal server, in which the top 2,000 players were eligible to participate in the Deadman Invitational. The last seasonal Invitational was held in 2020. Invitational rules varied, but generally involved invited participants on fresh accounts with under a week to build their accounts for the finale. During the finale, fog spread throughout most of the world, with a small safe zone, forcing players to fight to stay in the safe zone. The final survivor won a $20,000 cash prize.
Deadman Seasons and the Invitational were replaced by named Deadman modes running roughly annually.

Reborn
editDeadman: Reborn was available from 25 August 2021 to 16 September 2021. Major changes from past Deadman Modes included Sigils, which functioned similarly to relics from the Trailblazer League, as well as combat level-separated worlds and experience rate modifiers.
The original finale was held on 18 September 2021 and involved the 2048 top players fighting in 1v1 battles, with winners moving on to the next round. The winner of this finale was Wolfff90. Due to extreme network attacks during the finale, the finale was rerun on 24 June 2022, with the winner being Pid Grabber. The rerun finale was also plagued by network attacks.
Apocalypse
editDeadman: Apocalypse was available from 25 August 2023 to 15 September 2023. This variant focused on "breaches" in which players had to contain a swarm of monsters that appeared in random locations at regular intervals throughout the day.
The finale was held on 16 September 2023 on five finale worlds, with no combat level restrictions. The last player standing on each world won a portion of the prize pool. The winners on each finale world were Liquid statX, SoloMission, R3DL0RRYY, Rot Rupper, and CD Slay3r.
Armageddon
editDeadman: Armageddon ran from 19 July 2024 to 3 August 2024. The mechanics were similar to Deadman: Apocalypse, with an additional randomly-timed breach each day.
The finale was held on 3 August 2024 on five finale worlds for different combat level brackets. Extensive allegations of rule-breaking during the event and finale led to the banning of several hundred accounts, including some who had originally been the last accounts standing. After investigations into this was complete, the winners were determined to be Taatuh DMM, Antibone, solo timbo, and KalculatorV4, with the 111 – 126 Bracket winner not announced.
Annihilation
editDeadman: Annihilation ran from 30 January 2026 to 20 February 2026. The mechanics remained similar to the past two Deadman Mode variants, but with some key changes including the removal of bank keys and and a reworked sigil system.
The finale was held on 21 February 2026 on four finale worlds for different combat level brackets. The winners were determined to be Desailly, KalculatorV4, mama mia 73, and Kalmaars. A second finale was run on 28 February 2026 for the 96+ combat bracket due to the first finale being unable to accommodate all players, the winner of which being HershyPurse6.
Invite Only
editAll Stars
editStarting in 2024, Deadman: All Stars is an annual invite-only variant of Deadman Mode organised by content creator Solo Mission, involving 30 players split between 6 teams.
| Season | Start date | End date | Finale date | Winning team |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14 June 2024 | 22 June 2024 | 22 June 2024 | Dino Nuggets |
| 2 | 30 May 2025 | 8 June 2025 | 8 June 2025 | Solo Mission Snakes |
| 3 | 6 June 2026 | 15 June 2026 | 20 June 2026[a] |
Factions
editA short, 4-hour long event held on 25 January 2026 with massively increased XP multipliers and drop rates, in which 4 factions of over 100 content creators battled to be the last standing. The winning team was Team Saradomin.
Mechanics
editLevel brackets
editPlayers are divided into brackets based on their combat levels to limit how large the power difference can be between the players one can attack or be attacked by while still using the same world. These level thresholds are 3–75, 76–85 and 86–126.
Each bracket enjoys a 2x unique drop rate modifier.[2]
Experience
editOn permanent Deadman Mode servers, players will instead receive a scaling experience boost of 20x at level 1, to 10x at level 50 and beyond during their first 12 hour protection. With no protection, the boost is reduced to 10x at level 1, scaled to 5x at level 50 and beyond.
Experience points gained from quest rewards, XP lamps, and other rewards are multiplied similarly based on protection status and skill level. Players can disable or re-enable experience gain for combat skills or for Hitpoints by speaking with Nigel at Lumbridge graveyard or at any Deadman chest.
Players will only have a 2x experience multiplier in most instanced areas. This includes instanced boss fights, the Nightmare Zone, and the Tzhaar Fight Cave. Exceptions include player-owned houses (construction and prayer experience only) and Tempoross.
For seasonal Deadman Mode versions, see their corresponding main articles under Deadman Mode variants.
Beginning protection
editOn permanent Deadman Mode servers, players cannot attack nor be attacked by other players for the first 12 hours of in-game time. Players may choose to end their protection period early by speaking to the Doomsayer. During the protection period, players cannot:
- Receive a Wilderness weapon, Ancient Warriors' weapon or charms [3]
- Attack breach monsters
- Enter the boss lairs of Callisto, Venenatis, Vet'ion, Artio, Spindel, or Cal'varion
- Enter the Revenant Caves
- Enter the boss lairs of the God Wars Dungeon generals
- Enter raids dungeons
Town protection
edit
This map applies ONLY to W345. For the safezones used in Annihilation, see here.
Some cities, towns and banks in the gamemode are guarded and are completely safe for unskulled players. Players inside these guarded areas can not be attacked by other players in it, nor can they be attacked from outside of it.
Any player who enters these guarded zones when skulled will be attacked on sight by level 1337 guards and frozen for a short period of time by Wizguards. The melee and ranged guards have a fast attack speed and their damage ramps up the more consecutive hits you take, starting at 20% of the player's hitpoints level.
The Barbarian Assault active minigame area and the raid dungeons are the only places in Deadman Mode where players are unable to attack others outside of guarded areas. Guarded zones include:
- Catherby bank Show map
- East Ardougne Show map
- Falador Show map
- Jatizso (within the town area) Show map
- Kourend Castle Show map
- Lumbridge Show map
- Neitiznot (within the town area) Show map
- Port Phasmatys Show map
- Rellekka Show map
- Seers' Village bank (ground floor[UK]1st floor[US]) Show map
- Sophanem Show map
- The Tower of Voices Show map
- Tree Gnome Stronghold Show map
- Tutorial Island Show map
- Varrock Show map
- Void Knights' Outpost and Pest Control Island Show map
- Yanille Show map
No dungeons or Rooftop Agility Courses are considered safezones, even if accessible from safe city limits. Looting bags may not be filled inside of safezones, but unlike other game modes, can be freely used anywhere outside of these guarded areas. On the other hand, note that the effects of an imbued ring of wealth still only apply inside of the Wilderness.[4]
Skull status
editAttacking players first will always give you a 5-minute skull, even if you are attacking another skulled player. Attacking players during this skull timer always resets it back to 5 minutes and the timer will not deplete while in an instanced area or when standing on the same tile for over around a minute. Remaining time will be shown on the game HUD and it refreshes every half a minute. The amount of bank keys the player is in possession of will be visible in the different look of their skull icon (see skull types).
In Deadman Mode, being skulled will prevent you from accessing the guarded areas, as level 1337 guards and Wizguards will immediately attack the player on entry. This means that the skulled player has to utilise banks that are not in safe-zones and these become hotspots for player killers.

Regardless of skull status, attempting to log out, enter a portal (Player-owned house), or use most forms of non-teleport transportation such as minecarts will bring up a 7 second timer interface that will begin counting down in the chatbox. While this interface is active, the player must not perform any further actions or be attacked. After the timer interface stays open without interruption for 7 seconds, the player will automatically perform the requested action.
Skulled players will not be able to teleport instantly even if they are out of combat, as they will receive the 7 second timer interface when they attempt to teleport. If a player manages to kill someone in PvP combat, they are granted a limited time window to teleport away without any delay. If this kill was reasonable, as in the target was at most 30 combat levels lower, you are granted a 1-minute grace period when you can not be attacked. Attacking, dying or logging out will cause you to lose your remaining grace period.
Unskulled players will be able to teleport instantly as long as they have not been attacked by a player or NPC in the last 7 seconds. If a unskulled player has been attacked recently and attempts to teleport, they will instead receive the following game message: In this case, players can perform further actions without restarting the countdown because they do not receive the 7 second timer interface that they must keep open.
Death
edit
Dying in Deadman Mode varies depending on how the player died. If killed by another player, 50% of the 10 most valuable item stacks will be taken by the killer in the form of a bank key, in addition to any items that were in the victim's inventory.
When a skulled player is killed by an NPC, 50% of the 10 most valuable stacks of items from their bank are dropped on the floor instead. These items will appear instantly to everyone. In addition, untradeable items (such as Void Knight equipment or a fire cape) will convert to coins upon death.
However, if a player dies to an NPC without being skulled, it acts as a normal death akin to that of Old School RuneScape.
Additionally, players can change their respawn point to the Grand Exchange by speaking to Brugsen Bursen.
Bank raiding and insurance
edit
Players who are killed by another player or killed by an NPC while skulled will drop a bank key, in which half of 10 most valuable items stacks, based on Grand Exchange value, are removed from your bank. The key will automatically appear in the inventory of the PKer, if they have the space for it.
The player that obtained the key can collect the items by opening a chest in a bank within a safe-zone, which means they must wait until their skull expires. These bank keys cannot be deposited into a bank, and only five bank keys can be in a player's possession at any given time. Bank keys look identical once in the inventory and cannot be examined to discover who dropped them. Once obtained, they cannot be dropped, only destroyed.

If a player kills a player who is in possession of another bank key, they will drop their own bank key in addition to their victim's bank keys, with higher valued keys taking priority. If a skulled player dies to a guard, 50% of their 10 most valuable item stacks from the bank are dropped wherever they die. However, if a player does not have enough inventory space to receive a key, it will be dropped to the floor. This will only happen until the limit of 5 keys is reached. Both keys in a player's inventory and on the floor count towards this limit. Killing players past 5 bank keys will cause the victim's bank drop on the floor instead of creating a bank key.
Players can insure up to ten items (ten single items, not 10 stacks of items) by speaking to the Financial Wizard and depositing the items in the safe deposit box. Items in the safe deposit box will not be lost, unlike those found in the bank, and can be collected any time the player visits the Financial Wizard at almost any bank in a safe-zone. Untradeable items may not be stored in the safe deposit box, nor any items that are tradeable but cannot be listed for sale on the Grand Exchange.
Most coffers are either completely disabled or have withdrawing restricted such as Yohnus and Servant's money bag. However some places still remain and can be used to store coins without risking them on death: Bounty Hunter (up to
2,000,000), Blast Furnace (up to
150,000) and Nightmare Zone (up to
40,000).
Breaches
editBoss breaches familiar appear on the permanent Deadman world every weekend in four-hour intervals, starting on Saturday at 02:00 GMT and ending on Sunday at 22:00 GMT. There are two types of breaches:
- Localised breach in two locations, of which one is in single-way combat and other in multicombat.
- A region breach in which the breach monsters spawn widely across given region.
Monsters spawn from a Boss Spawn created by the projectiles that flow out of the Breach spawners. In localised breaches, the monsters can spawn maximum of 9 tiles away in any direction from the spawner. The breach will keep spawning bosses for around 15 minutes, and the ones left unkilled will despawn around 30 minutes later. Efficacy of ruby bolts (e) special attacks is limited on breach monsters, having a max hit of 30.
Players with PvP protection active cannot attack breach monsters at either breach location on the permanent Deadman world.
Charms
editCharms give various boosts in PvM, skilling and gathering while they are in the player's inventory. There is no restriction on the amount of charms in use simultaneously. They are dropped by breach bosses and NPCs of over 200 combat level. The charms include:
- Accumulation charm, boosts clue scrolls rates, hunting chinchompas, gathering and runecraft.
- Nimbleness charm, boosts mark of grace rates, agility and pickpocketing.
- Stockpiling charm, boosts various minigame rewards, stackable clues and banks gathering resources.
- Vulnerability charm, boosts PvM in terms of accuracy, reduced damage and improved thralls.
Shops
editSome stores have a modified stock on the Deadman Mode world compared to other game modes, such as the Dorgeshuun crossbow and related accessories being offered for sale at Lowe's Archery Emporium in Varrock, Hickton's Archery Emporium in Catherby, and the Bow and Arrow salesman in the Ranging Guild. Combination runes may be sold to the Void Knight Magic Store, who lists an empty stock of them. Several stores also feature greatly reduced restock times.
There is no convenience fee when listing items for sale at the Grand Exchange, and correspondingly no items are sunk through this mechanism on Deadman Mode.[5] Be very wary of leaving items behind in offer slots when venturing outside of a safe zone however, as all items listed for sale at the Grand Exchange will be permanently deleted when dying in combat against another player.[6]
Drop rate
editThe drop rate for some rare items is increased for permanent Deadman Mode, although no exhaustive list of affected items has been confirmed as of yet. Cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild will drop defenders at a rate of 1/25 for bronze through rune, while cyclopes in the basement drop the dragon defender at a rate of 1/50. The standard list of items that are given an increased drop rate during the Deadman Seasonal modes are not boosted on the permanent Deadman Mode server however.[7] The pharaoh's sceptre no longer has an increased drop rate on the permanent Deadman world.[8]
Revenants drop standard loot, though they are unable to drop ancient artefacts. The emblem drops are instead replaced with either magic or yew seeds if skulled, or a dragon med helm if unskulled. They are still able to call the global Deadman Mode tables described below however, and the revenant maledictus is still guaranteed to drop an ancient artefact on death.
Players may receive archaic emblems as a monster drop on the permanent Deadman world, which can be given to the Emblem Trader in exchange for credit at the Bounty Hunter Shop. Players who are on a Wilderness Slayer task have a chance of receiving a tier 1 emblem as an uncommon drop from the monster they are assigned to kill, whereas a tier 5 emblem may be received as a drop from any NPC with a combat level of 100 or higher at a rate of 1/300.[9] These archaic emblems may exchanged at the Emblem Trader for respectively 50,000 and 750,000 archaic points, to be spent in the aforementioned shop. The emblems cannot be upgraded to a higher tier.
Monsters encountered in the Wilderness have a chance of dropping a scroll of imbuing, which scales based on the monster's combat level. Unlike in regular game modes, Wilderness monsters will not drop a looting bag, and hence the only way to acquire the item in Deadman Mode is by purchasing it from the Bounty Hunter Shop, trading another player for a looting bag note, or by buying access to the dispenser at the Wilderness Agility Course.[10]
Global loot table
editKilling any monster with a combat level of 200 or higher has a chance to drop charms. In addition, monsters in Wilderness on the permanent Deadman Mode world have a chance of calling a global loot table containing all of the weapons that are part of the Ancient Warriors' equipment.[11] The only exception consists of black chinchompas, which will not give a shot at accessing the global Wilderness loot table when killed.[12]
| Item | Quantity | Rarity | Price | High Alch | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Statius's warhammer | 1 | 1/8 | Not sold | 180,000 | |
| Vesta's longsword | 1 | 1/8 | Not sold | 180,000 | |
| Vesta's spear | 1 | 1/8 | Not sold | 180,000 | |
| Zuriel's staff | 1 | 1/8 | Not sold | 180,000 | |
| Morrigan's javelin | 50 | 2/8 | Not sold | 120,000 | |
| Morrigan's throwing axe | 50 | 2/8 | Not sold | 120,000 |
Rate of access
edit
The rate of accessing this table depends on the combat level of the monster.[13]
The probability of rolling for this table after killing a monster with combat level and monster type modifier is:
For monsters level 1 to 100:
For monsters level 101 to 500:
- .
For monsters level 501 or above:
The monster type modifier is equal to 16 if a regular monster is killed, while equals 4 if the killed NPC is a boss monster. Any of the Wilderness monsters that can be assigned as a boss Slayer task counts as a boss monster for the purpose of the boosted global drop table on the permanent Deadman server.[14]

Boxing, which is engaging in combat with an allied player for the purpose of avoiding legitimate gameplay, will result in disqualification.
Historical mechanics
editDeath (historical)
editPrior to an update on 4 October 2023, losing experience on PvP deaths was a core mechanic of Deadman Mode.
Historically, players who died to players would lose experience in accordance to the combat level differences. The exact formula was:
Where:
Players could choose to preserve a maximum of five skills (two combat skills and three non-combat skills) to prevent experience loss. However, a player's Herblore level would never be less than 3, provided they had completed Druidic Ritual, and a player's Hitpoints level will never be less than 10. In addition, players could purchase a life insurance to prevent their Hitpoints level from falling below certain thresholds. After its removal, refunds for bought insurances could be claimed from Gelin.

edit- There was a glitch on 24 April 2018 where the permanent Deadman Mode world was temporarily swapped for scheduled maintenance, however Deadman Mode mechanics were prematurely applied on the new Deadman Mode world and players were subject to Deadman Mode conditions that affected their main server accounts. Jagex attempted to restore items and experience lost by the glitch.
