Remains
Remains are items that are always dropped by creatures upon their death. These can often be used by the player to gain Prayer experience.
Bones
edit
Creatures usually drop a certain variant of bones when they are killed. For example, goblins and guards drop regular bones, while moss giants and mountain trolls drop big bones.
Bones can be buried, or offered to certain altars for more Prayer experience. Casting Sinister Offering on them grants both Prayer and Magic experience. For the costs per bone and hourly experience rates, see the price calculator and Prayer training pages.
Most bones can also be ground into bonemeal, which can then be offered alongside buckets of slime at the Ectofuntus. This gives better experience than a gilded altar, but requires significantly more time and effort.
They can also be blessed at the exposed altar on the summit of Ralos' Rise, then chiseled into blessed bone shards and sacrificed at the libation bowl in the Teomat. Sacrificing requires filling the bowl with one jug of wine for every 400 shards:
- Jug of blessed wine - 5 Prayer XP per shard
- Jug of blessed sunfire wine - 6 Prayer XP per shard
This process surpasses both the Ectofuntus and gilded altars in terms of experience per bone, though on average the Wilderness chaos altar offers the best value.

Demonic ashes
edit
Demons and demon-like creatures usually drop a type of demonic ashes instead of bones, which can be scattered by the player for Prayer experience. These ashes cannot be used on altars (other than the sacred bone burner), but players can cast Demonic Offering on them for more Prayer experience as well as Magic experience.
| Ashes | Base XP | GE Price | Dropped by | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiendish ashes | 10 | 32 | Several, including imps | ||
| Vile ashes | 25 | 142 | Several, including hellhounds | ||
| Malicious ashes | 65 | 970 | Several, including black demons | ||

| Infernal ashes | 110 | 2,760 | Cerberus, K'ril Tsutsaroth, Skotizo, Tormented Demons and Zalcano | ||
Some creatures, such as elemental wizards, abyssal leeches, abyssal walkers, and abyssal guardians, will always drop regular ashes when defeated (see here for an exhaustive list). However, these are not considered demonic ashes and cannot be used to train Prayer.
Shade remains
edit
Shades can be accessed in the Shades of Mort'ton minigame by using keys to traverse deeper into the Shade Catacombs. When killed, they drop remains which can be cremated by using pyre logs and a tinderbox at a funeral pyre, leaving behind keys or coins. Higher tier shades require higher tier keys to access, and higher tier pyre logs to cremate.
There is no Prayer level requirement to cremate shade remains, though there is a Firemaking requirement depending on the pyre logs used, and it is required to complete the Shades of Mort'ton quest.
Prayer and Firemaking experience gained from cremating the remains depends on the remains and the pyre logs used, and the Hard and Elite Morytania Diary rewards increase the experience gained for those skills, respectively, by 50%. The following table assumes the lowest tier pyre logs are being used, though a comprehensive breakdown can be found on the remains' respective pages.

Monster heads
editEnsouled heads
edit
While not strictly "remains" in the sense that they are uncommon rather than guaranteed drops, many monsters, when killed, can leave behind their severed heads with the souls still attached. These heads can be reanimated by casting the appropriate spell in the Arceuus spellbook. Killing the reanimated monster rewards Prayer experience depending on the head.
The spells can be cast on the heads either in the vicinity of where they were dropped, or later within range of the Dark Altar. These heads can also be sent directly to the bank by using a charge of the Soul bearer, a reward from the Bear Your Soul miniquest.
Reanimating ensouled heads is generally a slower but cheaper and lower intensity alternative to traditional Prayer training methods.
Trophy heads
edit
Several Slayer monsters rarely drop their heads when killed. They can be sacrificed to the Dark Altar, used to recolour equipment, or stuffed at the Taxidermist and mounted in the Head trophy space of a player-owned house.
Other remains
edit- Vampyres drop Vampyre dust. This is used with a Prayer level of 54 or higher on Saradomin Braziers for 200 experience.
- Sun-kissed bones are rewarded by completing Moons of Peril and Hunters' Rumours and can be offered at a libation bowl after being crafted into blessed bone shards.
- The Colossal Wyrm Remains is a paleontological site in Varlamore, pieces of which can chip off while traversing the agility course in the form of blessed bone shards.
- Metal dragons always drop several metal bars of their type, in addition to the dragon bones.
- Many animals have guaranteed drops other than bones. For instance, chickens always drop a raw chicken, cows always drop both cowhide and raw beef, and the Giant Mole always drops mole skin and mole claws.
- Animals killed with the Hunter skill often have this as well, such as the copper longtail that always drops raw bird meat and orange feathers.
- Jungle spiders drop spider carcasses, that can be used in Cooking to make a spider on shaft or spider on stick.
- Fever spiders drop their carcass, but only during the Rum Deal quest.
- Baby tanglefootii drop leaves.
- Snails drop fat or thin snails and/or their shells.
- Araxytes drop their venom sacks, which can be used to cure poison and venom, or to create extended anti-venom+ potions.
- Lobstrosities drop raw lobsters.
- Tokkul is a holy currency made from the broken-down bodies of Haar-Tok, which are TzHaar who are conscious but cannot move because they have solidified, making them essentially dead. It is a common, but not guaranteed drop from killing TzHaars.
- Fossil Island fossils are the remains of ancient plants and animals (as well as some archaeological curiosities) that can be displayed in the Varrock Museum.
- Waterfiends always drop water runes.
- When the Gemstone Crab changes locations, it sheds a piece of its shell which can be mined for uncut gems.
- The Grotesque Guardians drop granite dust when killed, which can be used to craft granite cannonballs.
- Cave slimes always drop swamp tar.
- All the bosses that the Culinaromancer summons in Recipe for Disaster drop their constituent foods as remains, aside from Gelatinnoth Mother, presumably because there are no gelatinous dessert items in the game.
- Dwarf remains are the corpse of Gilob, a dwarf watchman who was slain by goblins.
- Players may deliver crates of pest remains during courier tasks.
- Mudskipper always drop mudskipper hides.
Dismemberment in quests
edit
- The player decapitates Elvarg, retrieving her head during Dragon Slayer I.
- In A Porcine of Interest, the player removes a foot from the slain Sourhog.
- During the Getting Ahead quest, the player tries to convince Gordon that they slayed the beast that was terrorising his farm. As it happened, the beast was headless, so the player fabricates a bloody head from clay to trick Gordon.
- The player kills and decapitates the Ice Troll King during The Fremennik Isles, bringing his head to Mawnis Burowgar as proof of the deed.
- Ranis' head is removed from his corpse during A Night at the Theatre in order to access his memories.
- During Creature of Fenkenstrain, the player collects and exhumes various body parts so that Dr Fenkenstrain can reanimate them:
Trivia
edit
- Several creatures never drop their remains, though they may drop other items. Examples include jellies, gargoyles, rockslugs, and regular spiders.
- Despite vitreous jellies having humanoid skeletons trapped inside, they do not drop bones.
- The bones of creatures being collected by the Odd Old Man during the Rag and Bone Man I and Rag and Bone Man II quests are distinct from and dropped alongside the creatures' standard remains.
- Bones found in ogre coffins belonged to Fayrgs, Raurgs, and Ourgs. The first two races are extinct, and there is likely only one remaining Ourg, General Graardor. However, he does not drop Ourg bones when defeated. Only the undead Ourg Slash Bash, who is fought once during the Zogre Flesh Eaters quest, drops Ourg bones, while Fayrg and Raurg bones are not dropped by any creature.
- Unlike all other known demons in Old School RuneScape, Thammaron did not turn to ashes when he perished, possibly due to the manner in which he died.
- The original developer of the quest later revealed that this was a design mistake, as he was not aware at the time that demons did not drop bones.[1]
- Upon the release of the Sailing skill, several monsters dropped bones despite their real-life counterparts not having any. The bones drops were removed shortly after release from the following monsters:[2]
- Sharks like the great white shark. Real-life chondrichthyans like the great white shark have skeletons made of cartilage rather than bone.
- Rays like the manta ray. Real-life rays are also chondrichthyans.
- Krakens like the vampyre kraken. Real-life cephalopods like the vampire squid do have a rigid internal structure called a gladius, but no bones.
