A one-defence pure is a combat pure that sacrifices training Defence to focus on maximising damage output at a lower combat level. One-defence pures are usually created for player-killing as high offensive combat stats typically provide greater leverage against low- to medium-tier armour. The levels of these accounts vary, although many are within the 50 to 90 combat level range.

One-defence pures are formidable in short fights as they rely on killing their opponent quickly but are disadvantaged in sustained fights due to taking damage more consistently. This also makes training combat skills slightly more dangerous as monsters will do more damage over time.

A strong advantage for one-defence pures is that they have access to high-level weapons or spells that similarly levelled players with higher defence do not have.

One-defence pures vary in combat level as players choose to obtain certain Attack, Strength, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, or Prayer levels. As long as the character's defence remains at level one they are considered a one-defence pure.

Starting out

[edit | edit source]

When creating a one-defence pure it is important to plan from the beginning which variation will be trained. For many, the primary goal will be to create a powerful character in a certain combat bracket which may mean limiting other combat skills as well. Variations include focusing entirely on either Magic, Ranged, or Strength or focusing on obtaining 50 Attack for a granite maul, 60 Attack for dragon weapons, or 75 Attack for godswords. Accounts made specifically for the free-to-play PvP combat might stop leveling their Attack at 40 instead for the rune weaponry. Players can also decide if they will obtain at least 25 Prayer for Protect Item. Players should note that if they do not train combat stats with Quests initially, they might reach a higher level in for example Attack or Prayer than they intended if certain Quests are completed at a later time.

It is recommended to consult the wiki's combat level calculator and review quest experience rewards to ensure that you will meet your goal without compromising additional combat levels. For example, training Prayer is advised to be done through quests to also gain access to additional items, spells, or areas.

Training combat stats

[edit | edit source]

Magic

[edit | edit source]

Magic is necessary for completing several of the quests you need.

Higher Magic levels also lets you get around quicker with teleports.

Magic can be trained via Hitpoints (HP) methods, such as bursting at Ape Atoll Dungeon or Kruk's Dungeon, fighting the Gemstone Crab, or non-HP methods, such as splashing, teleporting and alching.

94 Magic is needed to cast Ice Barrage and 95 Magic for Fire Surge.

Melee

[edit | edit source]

Training Melee with quests

[edit | edit source]

Completing low-requirement quests will award attack and strength experience and significantly hasten early levelling. View all quest experience rewards for additional resources.

  1. Vampyre Slayer – 4,825 Attack experience (free-to-play)
  2. Tree Gnome Village – 11,450 Attack experience
  3. The Grand Tree – 18,400 Attack, 7,900 Agility, 2,150 Magic experience
  4. Waterfall Quest – 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience
  5. Death Plateau – 3,000 Attack experience (also grants access to climbing boots)
  6. Fight Arena – 12,175 Attack experience

These quests amount to 63,600 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience, or level 45 attack and level 30 strength directly from level 1. More quests awarding attack and strength experience are possible to complete on a 1 Defence pure, refer to the quest experience rewards page.

Safe Melee training areas

[edit | edit source]

Because of the lack of effective armour for one-defence players, training areas available are limited. Hill giants and moss giants, for example, are a common melee training target with close access to a bank. However, training in these areas and many other common melee training areas is made more difficult for one-defence pures due to the constant need for food and inability to survive more than a few kills before needing to bank.

Members can AFK train at the various types of crabs (rock crabs, sand crabs, ammonite crabs), or spend time at the Gemstone Crab. These monsters have high hitpoints, low defence, and very low attack making them a safe option.

Ranged

[edit | edit source]

Ranged should be trained while safespotting to reduce damage taken. Training with the dwarf multicannon will allow for fast Ranged experience and minimum Hitpoints experience. There are many places to train Ranged so, in general, you may reference pay-to-play Ranged training. For chinning range make sure to not accept Daero's training from Monkey Madness I or Monkey Madness II when going back to Ape Atoll. Use the right-click "Travel" option instead, to avoid engaging in a dialogue with him.

Prayer

[edit | edit source]

One-defence pures sometimes opt for level 1 Prayer to remain low combat, and more often 43 Prayer for overheads, 44 Prayer for Eagle Eye, 45 Prayer for Mystic Might, 52 Prayer for Smite or 55 Prayer for Preserve.

Many clue steps cannot be completed by one-defence pures due to item requirements or quest requirements. For a full list, see One-defence pure/Clues.

Equipment

[edit | edit source]

This section shows the strongest achievable best-in slot equipment for Pay-to-play pures based on offensive bonuses. In practice, however, combining best-in-slot items with Prayer-boosting items such as vestment robes will usually provide the best experience, due to their reliance on combat boosting and overhead prayers.

This assumes the required quests have been completed and the relevant levels achieved. Best-in-slot gear will also vary depending on the build and goals of the one-defence pure.

  1. ^ When using an obsidian weapon, such as the toktz-xil-ak.
  2. ^ +1 max hit vs glory, but loses accuracy and defence bonuses.
  3. ^ Better than the kilt if using a stab weapon and the kilt does not give a max hit.
  4. ^ Only against high defence monsters, loses to rapier/Saeldor/mace otherwise. Worse than scythe/soulreaper axe/noxious halberd for general PvM use.
  5. ^ Un-obtainable for 1 Defence Ironman accounts.
  6. ^ +1 max hit over Mooleta in some setups.
  7. ^ Better than scythe against monsters smaller than 3x3. Higher attack levels and better gear benefits the scythe more than they benefit the axe.
  8. ^ Generally beats ultor when using a slash weapon.
