Treasure Trails is a Distraction and Diversion which involves solving clue scrolls. Clue scrolls contain a number of randomly chosen clues and riddles for the player to solve in steps to eventually find a reward casket, which could contain unique rewards. While the activity is available to free-to-play players, only beginner clues can be found and completed in free-to-play worlds.

Difficulty levels

[edit | edit source]

Clue scrolls have six types of difficulty levels, these are: beginner, easy, medium, hard, elite, and master. More difficult trails provide more valuable rewards. Every tier of clue scroll has their own requirements, increasing in complexity for higher tiers. In general, higher tiers feature more complex puzzles to solve, more remote locations to reach, and tougher quests and item requirements. Higher tiers are also likely to have medium or high level skill requirements. In most cases, players can boost these skills in order to meet the requirement.

Obtaining Clues

[edit | edit source]

Clue scrolls are acquired through a great number of different activities, where the difficulty of the activity generally corresponds to both the tier of clue dropped, and it's drop rate. Some of the activities that commonly provide clue scrolls include killing monsters, skilling, and opening impling jars.

For skilling, players can acquire clue scrolls through specific Woodcutting, Fishing and Mining methods. All skilling nodes can potentially reward clue scrolls of all tiers except master, though the drop rate is influenced by the skilling requirement. This is also increased depending on the player's corresponding skilling level, though clue scrolls from skilling methods are significantly rarer than from other sources.

Clue scrolls are usually dropped as a tertiary (bonus) drop, and the drop rate may be increased through several methods; for example, an imbued ring of wealth doubles the drop rate of clues from killing monsters in the Wilderness, and completion of the Medium Falador Diary increases the drop rate of clues from Falador's guards by 20%. Completion of the Easy, Medium, Hard and Elite tier of Combat Achievements additionally increases the drop rate of the corresponding clue tier by 5%. These bonuses all stack with each other.

Stacking limitations

[edit | edit source]

You can only have one of each type of clue scroll in your inventory or bank. However with the completion of X Marks the Spot, players will receive scroll boxes instead of clue scrolls directly: opening them will reward the player with a clue scroll. Unlike regular clue scrolls, these boxes are stackable, starting with a limit of 2. This limit is shared across boxes and scrolls (i.e, 1 scroll and 1 box is the same as 2 boxes for the sake of the limit). This limit can be increased twice per tier (for that tier only) by completing a specific number of clues in that tier and opening reward caskets. There is an additional special Mimic scroll case which increases the stack limit of all tiers by +1. Hence, there is a maximum stack limit size of 5 for any given scroll tier.

If you drop your clue scroll on the ground, it is possible to receive additional scrolls beyond the limit before it despawns. You can manipulate this mechanic - for more information see this guide.

If the player has reached the cap for the clue scroll of that tier, they will receive the message You have a sneaking suspicion that you would have received a/an [difficulty] clue scroll. If the player tries to pick up a clue scroll while having one in their possession of the same tier, they will get the message You already have a clue scroll of this tier. If the player has reached the cap and tries to pick up a scroll box, the box will be destroyed, with the message Some of your Scroll Boxes were destroyed, as you have too many of that tier.

Risks

[edit | edit source]

While it is possible to complete a Treasure Trail without any major requirements, it is highly recommended players meet the necessary requirements for the difficulty of each clue scroll so they may be done without issue. Failure to do so will likely result in the player having to abandon the Treasure Trail, as it is usually a loss of time, especially for lower levels if they cannot complete the step.

Treasure Trails will take players across all of Gielinor. Hard, Elite and Master steps can direct players into varying areas in the Wilderness, and players should be extremely careful if they do one of these steps.

It should be noted that if a player dies in the Wilderness with a clue scroll (or reward casket) in level 20 or higher Wilderness and it is not one of the top 3 kept items (or top 4 with Protect Item prayer) or is not protected by a clue box (in which case the player will lose the box but keep the scroll), the clue scroll will disappear, regardless of whether it's a PvP death or not. In lower Wilderness however (level 20 or lower), in PvP death, an unprotected clue scroll will stay on the ground for up to one hour. Players may find it beneficial to carry a Wilderness sword (to cut webs), Royal Seed Pod/Teleport Crystal and/or an Explorer's ring, as clue scrolls are always kept above these items; they will be lost upon death but duplicates are easily obtainable.

If players die to a monster outside of the Wilderness they will always keep their clue scroll, whether protected or not, as it is an untradeable item.

In hard and higher-levelled Treasure Trails, some steps will require the player to fight a random enemy based on the Treasure Trail's tier when the correct spot is dug at, as indicated with the list below:

STASH units

[edit | edit source]

STASH units (short for "Store Things And Stuff Here"), also known as hidey holes, are storage units for emote clue items, saving bank space and bank trips, especially for players who complete many Treasure Trails.

STASH units require varying levels of Construction in order to be constructed, which can be boosted. All STASH units require nails, and the plank needed corresponds to its tier.

There are 107 STASH units in total found throughout Gielinor. These locations are initially labelled as inconspicuous bushes/crates/holes/rocks, and, once built, become usable STASH units. Players can check which units they've already built/filled by visiting Watson and reading the noticeboard within his house, or by building a S.t.a.s.h chart in a player-owned house.

As with all player-constructed items, a hammer and saw are required to build STASH units.

Depending on the scenery the emote clue is located in, STASH may differ in appearance to appear as inconspicuous as possible. For a list of the locations of all STASH units as well as its building materials, visit this page.

Rewards

Treasure Trail complete!

There are a total of 638 unique rewards from all tiers of clue scrolls. The tier of items and their average value tends to increase with higher tiers of clue scrolls, with exceptions for sought-after items in lower tiers such as the medium tier reward of ranger boots. All tiers except for beginner can reward items from the universal drop table. Starting with the hard tier, rewards may also include items from the mega rare tables, such as gilded equipment or 3rd age equipment.
