The house and lumberyard north of Ardougne that previously belonged to Chuck, a removed character. It has remained empty since 2004.

Unused non-player characters are NPCs that exist within the game's code, but can not be found anywhere during normal gameplay. These exist for a variety of reasons; either they were removed from the game, replaced with other NPCs when an area was reworked, or were ultimately never made available ingame.

Characters who were never added[edit | edit source]

These characters have never been added to the game in any capacity; they are usually leftover content from development that has remained in the game files.

Forester They love the forests. 29 March 2004 A generic version of the Forester that guards McGrubor's Wood. Unlike the normal variant, they could be attacked instead of spoken to. An updated version was later added to the Woodcutting Guild.
Knight of Ardougne (unused).png
Knight of Ardougne To protect and serve the populace of Ardougne. 29 March 2004 An unused variant of the Knight of Ardougne. Both the animations and the head model are broken.
Barman.png
Barman Doesn't water down the beer too much. 29 March 2004 Unknown – may have been intended to appear somewhere in Ardougne.
Baby dragon (unused).png
Baby dragon Young but still dangerous. 29 March 2004 Similar to the Baby blue dragon, it just uses the default grey model for dragons with no recolouring.
Dryad.png
Dryad A wood nymph. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2. The concept was later recycled for the Wood Dryad in the Enchanted Valley.
Leprechaun.png
Leprechaun A funny little man normally associated with rainbows. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2, who had an identical appearance to Shamus. The concept was later recycled for the Tool Leprechaun.
Lizard man.png
Lizard man A scaly reptilian creature. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2. The concept was later recycled for Lizardmen in Great Kourend.
Mummy A tightly wrapped monster. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2, as part of "A pyramid quest in the desert full of traps, treasure and mummys". Updated versions would be added with the Desert Treasure quest in 2005.

Golem A creature made from clay. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2. They had an identical appearance to the Rock golem random event, while the concept was later recycled for the Clay golem.
Dwarf (unused).png
Dwarf A short angry guy. 29 March 2004 An unused Dwarf that had the same appearance as Mountain Dwarves, but would have been found above ground.
Skavid (unused).png
Skavid Servant race to the ogres. 29 March 2004 A generic version of the Skavids from the Watchtower quest. This variant could only be fought instead of talked to.
Yeti.png
Yeti The abominable snowman. 29 March 2004 A cut race planned to be added to RuneScape 2, as part of the 'Frozen Lands' area promised in a 2004 newspost but ultimately not released. The model was reused for King Vargas, while in RuneScape Yetis would eventually be released in 2009.
Gnome shop keeper.png
Gnome shop keeper Sells gnomish things. 29 March 2004 An unused gnome who would have sold goods within the Tree Gnome Stronghold. As all the shops are run by named characters, this gnome was never used and lacks any interaction options.

Gnome baller A professional gnome baller. 29 March 2004 A generic version of the Gnome ballers that can be found playing Gnomeball. This character, who lacks any team colours or options, may have been a placeholder until Gnome ballers with team colours were added.

Barbarian guard Not very civilised looking. 29 March 2004 A generic version of the Barbarian guard who guards the entrance to the Barbarian Outpost. They could only be attacked rather than spoken to, and were not graphically updated along with the other Barbarians in 2007.

Paladin A military man. 29 March 2004 While intended to appear during Biohazard possibly as a boss, it is unclear what the character was used for, since no Paladin appeared during the quest in RuneScape Classic.
Weapon poison salesman.png
Weapon poison salesman Supplier of deadly liquids. 29 March 2004 An unreleased shopkeeper who would have appeared in the Ranging Guild. A unique item called Display poison would have appeared at his stall.
Mist (unused).png
Mist Is it a low cloud? 14 October 2004 Presumably Vampyres would have either spawned as Mist, or turned into it when defeated. This mechanic was later used for Vampyre Juvinates in 2006.
Vampyric hound.png
Vampyric hound And I shall call him Fang. 14 October 2004 They would presumably have been the companion of Feral Vampyres, or the Vampyre count. The character is exceptionally big, being taller than most human NPCs.

Spider It's an extremely small and probably poisonous brown spider. 6 December 2004 While spiders can be found on Ape Atoll, this version could not be fought and only examined, with a different examine information to normal spiders.

Monkey It's a monkey. 6 December 2004 A developer placeholder for standard Ape Atoll monkeys, who ultimately were not added in any form.

Smokedevil The cave-dwelling cousin of the dust devils. 26 January 2005 An unreleased Slayer monster; presumably, they would have been found in the Smoke Dungeon while Dust Devils would have been above ground instead. The Smoke Devil was later released in 2014.
Vulture (unused).png
Vulture If you see them circling... run. 26 April 2005 Although added with the release of Sophanem, it is unclear if they were actually included in the game or not. With the release of Rag and Bone Man, new Vultures were added that landed, allowing players to obtain a Vulture wing.
Secretary.png
Secretary Task master. 31 May 2005 They presumably would have coordinated the Keldagrim tasks minigame. Instead, players are set tasks by speaking to shopkeepers directly.
Drunken Dwarf (Kebab).png
Drunken Dwarf He's had a fair bit to drink... 31 May 2005 Occasionally the Drunken Dwarf in Keldagrim would have turned into a kebab. This feature may possibly have been in the game until the release of Forgettable Tale.

Karamthulhu I will call him Squiddy; and he shall be my Squiddy, and he shall be mine. 31 October 2005 Originally, it was intended to be able to keep a Karamthulhu from Rum Deal as a pet. It had the option to “Talk-to”, or “Dismiss”. Because of an obscure glitch, they used to appear briefly if the player died with a Karamthulhu in their inventory.

Ram (shorn).png
Ram Freshly sheared. 10 April 2006 A sheared version of a Ram – they can never be seen as it is impossible to use shears on a Ram.
Captain Wimto.png
Captain Wimto Jolly good show! 24 April 2006 A gnome glider pilot added in 2006 in preparation for the Gnome Cooking rework later that year, but who was ultimately never added. It is possible he was supposed to man the glider at the Digsite, which was eventually taken up by Captain Errdo.
Buinn.png
Buinn Engineer's assistant. 13 June 2006 He would have been the operator of the catapult room in the Warriors' Guild. An object is used instead so this character does not appear.

Osman (Recipe for Disaster).png
Osman He looks a little shifty. 12 February 2007 Osman frozen in place by the spell of the Gypsy during Recipe for Disaster. Osman was originally supposed to have his own subquest, that was not completed in time for release. He was changed to be teleported out during the Banquet cutscene. It was later released as the Sorceress's Garden minigame, which this character was released alongside.

Characters removed before August 2007[edit | edit source]

The following characters were all present in RuneScape 2 at some stage; however, they were removed from the game before the August 2007 backup of RuneScape, and have therefore never been present in Old School RuneScape.

Mountain Dwarf He looks short and grumpy. 28 May 2002 10 April 2006 The Mountain Dwarf originally guarded the entrances to the White Wolf Tunnel. When the quest was reworked in 2006, they were split into two characters named Austri and Vestri. The character still exists in Recipe for Disaster however.

Aluft Gianne (historical).png
Aluft Gianne It's a tree gnome chef. 12 December 2002 7 August 2006 He was the original founder of the Gnome Restaurant business. When the minigame was reworked, he was split into two characters named Aluft Gianne snr. and Gianne jnr.
Rowdy Guard.png
Rowdy Guard He looks a bit aggressive and rowdy. 14 April 2003 30 October 2006 They could originally be found in the Desert Mining Camp, disciplining the Rowdy Slaves. When The Tourist Trap was reworked in 2006, they were replaced by new characters called Guards instead.

Watchman The strong arm of the law. 29 March 2004 July-November 2006 A former random event that appeared while training Thieving. Due to player complaints about being killed too quickly, he was superseded by the Pillory Guard and eventually removed from the game.
Imp (unused).png
Imp A vicious little imp. 29 March 2004 4 July 2006 Wizard Grayzag could originally be fought by the player; he would summon these stronger level 3 Imps in combat. In 2006 the Imp Catcher quest was reworked, and now Grayzag can only be spoken to.
Female slave (brown hair).png
Female slave She looks like she's been down here a long time. 29 March 2004 30 October 2006 The original version of Female slaves who could be found in the Desert Mining Camp. Servant Servant of Evil Bob. 9 August 2005 October 2006 A male servant who appeared during the Evil Bob random event. Since only speaking to the female servant helped the player to progress, he was removed.
Watchman (Draynor Bank Robbery).png
Watchman The strong arm of the law. 23 August 2005 November 2006 The Watchman previously appeared during the cutscene of the Draynor Bank Robbery to arrest the Wise Old Man. In a hidden update, he was replaced by the Pillory Guard.

Witch The hat's a dead give away. 20 February 2006 12 December 2006 The updated version of the monster from RuneScape Classic that could be found in Draynor Manor. It was only ingame for a few months before being replaced by the Witch, a new character with an identical appearance.

Characters who have since been released[edit | edit source]

Several NPCs were originally unused, but have since been added to Old School RuneScape in locations different to their original purpose. These are listed below:

These characters originally existed in Old School RuneScape, but have since been removed and can no longer be seen by players. This does not include the numerous temporary characters used during holiday events.

Arzinian Being of Bordanzan It's the Arzinian Being, whatever that is, that comes from Bordanzan, wherever that is. 21 March 2005 The Arzinian Being of Bordanzan can only be spoken to via the Wall of Flame, and only its avatars appear to the player. It actually has a combat level of 781, making it the strongest monster upon the release of Old School RuneScape.

Savant Assigned to help tracking down Solus Dellagar. 17 October 2005 The Savant is involved in the Wanted! and Slug Menace quests. The player can only communicate with her via the Commorb, so her real appearance is never seen.

Bones Bony. 10 April 2006 The Odd Old Man's bonesack is actually its own NPC. It can only be seen during dialogue with the Odd Old Man, where it is named as “Sack” instead of Bones.
